Chapter 1 continued

Tolu was restless all through the rest of the day and kept on murmuring without telling any of his roomies what the problem actually was. The finalist never really cared about anyone’s mood as all he does was just come in and then move the curtain that he put up to separate us from him. He soon put on his laptop and left me to my wonderings and Tolu to his foul mood. After I asked Tolu was bothering for the umpteenth time, I gave up and as he also refused to discuss anything with his friends. They also left him to wallow in his pains, I didn’t know much about relationships then as I had just left one – a long distance one but she called it off citing the fact It was interfering in her walk with God. I decided to let such things go and just focus on my studies. I only hoped that he didn’t get his heart broken by that girl because that girl looked older than he was. I put my mind away from him and decided to get a nap. I woke up late into the night and quickly gathered my books and ran as quickly as I could to the library. I knew that the main gate of the hall would have been closed so I took the abandoned path at the extreme part of the hall, just after the match viewing room. I checked my time and it was already close to midnight. I was careful of running too fast as I didn’t want to raise any suspicions among the few persons on the road.

The 2nd semester examinations was close and I wasn’t up to date with my books, I had been more busy trying to get something to eat the last few weeks and arguing who would win the champions league. I found my way to the back of the library through the faculty of arts. I showed my library id and had my bag searched before allowed in. I walked to the side of the library where our bags were to be kept before I finally moved to my favorite section of it – the third floor of the building. I sat down and went down to business but after one hour I had barely gotten anything to my head. I just couldn’t focus and assimilation was very difficult, my mind couldn’t just leave Tolu. I wanted to know what could have happened between them. Yes, the girl wasn’t very literate and I wondered what Tolu saw in her. She was one of the bleaching crew with those charismatic black dots on her calves, pretty disgusting I must add. She wasn’t even endowed as he usually said of the women that appealed to him, so what then did he see in a benin girl or as the usual thing well known among my people been done to my roomie, is he under the spell or it could be something I didn’t know.

I couldn’t seem to tell which but what did he mean by the fact that he has been played by the girl? Did he discover he was her ATm or did he get to know of her cheating spree because truthfully, mere looking at her, one could tell that her legs just cannot stay at a single place. I expected a bad boy like him to have known better or was he also looking to chop and clean and the girl got to know what he was planning. All manner of perspectives kept coming and I was so carried away which what must have caused this disagreement between them I didn’t notice when someone took a seat beside me until she dropped her books on the table with a rather loud stump. I was startled and unconsciously dropped my pen and looked towards the rude fellow beside me only to discover the rude beauty – francess, famously called the Face of Tech. As usual, she didn’t see anything wrong in what she did and just continued with her reading. I was pretty pissed at her behavior and then to worsen matters, the pen fell towards where she kept her feet. I decided to get back at her and just move her legs rather forcefully and picked what I wanted. She hissed after what I did and I heard called me a goat, I whispered bittch but made sure it was loud enough for her to hear. I saw her stare at me for a while before she returned to her books.

Though unusual, I was able to concentrate on my reading for quite some time after the fiasco and when it was close to five am in the morning, I decided it was time for me to leave. I took my books and left the rude damsel, I found my bag, thankfully it was still there. I took it and showed it to the man at the gate and once again, I displayed my I.D and started my walk back to my hostel. The road was quiet and empty as most students were still asleep but when I was close to the SUG block, I heard hurried footsteps behind me. I looked behind and it was the rude beauty. I faced the direction to my hostel and ignored the person behind me. She slowed down when she got close to me and walked with me, she kept on looking behind her and I wondered why she came out at this time if she knew the risks involved. There have been rumours of rape at this time of the day and mostly around this place. When we got close to the Micro-biology department just opposite Bello hall, there was a rather loud noise which set her off and she pulled herself to me which made me stop my walk. She held on to me for quite some time but I patiently waited for her to untangle herself from me as she never asked for my permission to touch me or even hold on for that long. The night was still with just both of us on that empty road and then suddenly she probably realized where she was and quickly like I was a burning frame, she moved away from me. I chuckled which made her face turn red before I continued my walk, I had walked for quite sometime and was close to the back gate of my hall when I heard her steps behind me. I ignored like I did earlier but I heard her whisper for me to wait just when I was about to descend into the valley between my hall and the drainage just off the road.

“Wait….please..wait…”

So, she could talk, the proud bittch could talk. I ignored her and continued with my walk, she caught with me once again and whispered the same thing. This time, she stressed the please, I stopped and raised my eyebrows, the place wasn’t illuminated so I had doubts if she saw what I did with my eyes but I guess she got the message after I stopped.

“Can you please walk me to my hostel?”

I was stunned by what she said, not that I wasn’t expecting what she said but then having the nerve to ask me such after what she just did at the library a while ago confirmed just how pompous this girl was. I shook my head and turned to continue my walk but then she said,

“….I am sorry.”

I smiled and asked,

“What’s in for me?”

“I don’t understand.” She replied.
I adjusted my bag and faced the drainage, she understood my message and sighed before asking,

“ What do you want?”

“You.” I replied. I didn’t know where that came from but the scowl on her face showed she wasn’t ready to do any such thing.

“How do you mean?” she asked.

“Look Lady, I am tired of this back and forth barter. We both know what I mean, are you ready or not?”

The scowl stayed on and then she looked behind to see an empty, quiet road. She suddenly changed her face to a very innocent one and looked at me but I kept my stance.

“Fine, but I will get you back for this.” I ignored her threat and walked back into the road. I held her hands after she caught up with me and then led her to Saint Annes where she was resident. All through the walk, we didn’t utter a word to each other and when we got to her hostel some few minutes past six, she didn’t say a thank you or even looked my way but simply entered the hall. I didn’t care, for me I officially had my first booty call but where did this strange courage come from for me to have done such a thing but now I wish I never stepped that library that night, I wish I never saw Francess, I wish.

Chapter one continued

I spent the rest of the weekend in the library ‘jacking’ as much as I could and spent Sunday afternoon sleeping and snoring. Tolu was still kept to himself mostly but he had started to greet, which was all I heard from him all day. I attended church in the evening as that was when the church was allocated time, it was weird when I first started but then I later got used to it. I loved the church because their worship and praise was top notch, they had no rival on campus when it came to that and the place of worship was my hall’s cafeteria, so I didn’t have to walk too much. The preacher was good but the drawback was that they weren’t too many beautiful ladies in the church, the Catholics and RCCG owned that category but then, what would be the use if my fellowship was filled with the prettiest girls on campus, I couldn’t talk to them, I was damn too shy to do that. Which was why I was surprised that I was able to pull that stunt with Francess, I just couldn’t believe it was me doing the talking and using her weakness at that point to my own gain, although I have always been an opportunist, the perfect one as I was later told by someone.

It could have been to the fact that I was quite irritated by her rude behavior, because she feels she is so beautiful and intelligent – although she is. She scored a 99 out of a possible 100 in technical drawing. I lost my voice when I got to know she was the one who attained that feat but I knew deep down that she was favored by the annoying lecturer. But then, 99, that was extraordinary, she earned everyone’s respect and it became even more difficult for guys to have any conversation with her. They either felt unworthy or something along that line but I didn’t care as I wasn’t even interested in her, she was a snob, nothing more.

All my stay in the library, I never saw her and when classes resumed on Monday, I quickly put her of my mind and focused on what the PHY 117 lecturer was relaying. The class was over at ten and I decided to remain in the CBN building to continue my reading. I went upstairs and put on my patched earphones, I wasn’t interested in the lectures of Zoology, It wasn’t my area of study. I was there for about two hours after which it was time for math. I took my things and was heading for the stairs and when I saw Francess. She was seated adjacent to where I was and must have been watching me all this time but of course she acted otherwise by burying her head in her books. I chuckled and walked past her as I knew that soon she would follow suit as it was almost time for the next class.

She could have left before I saw her as I wasn’t aware if anyone was behind me but she chose to stay which meant she wanted me to see her, which was quite weird. I expected her to avoid me by all means possible but it seems she was calling out to me. I climbed down the stairs and found my way to the third roll. I was twenty minutes early, I decided to use the opportunity to brush through the previous topic. When it was five minutes before the start of the lecture, I heard felt someone’s outstretched leg hit mine. I ignore it as I was really engrossed in my reading but when it happened for the second and third time, I decided to give the person a warning glare, I turned to expect a familiar face but I was shocked to find the innocent face of Francess. She stared back at me like she didn’t know of what she just did. I had to turn back as eyes were beginning to look our way as we just kept staring at each other. Before I turned back I saw her twitch her lips a little, was that a grin? Is she stalking me or is this her way of getting back at me? I ignored her and focused on the lecture but I couldn’t as she found different ways of disturbing me even after I moved my legs from her reach. She retorted to resting her legs on my seat and afterwards she would prick with something sharp at my back which I suspected was a pair of dividers.

I managed to pull through her theatrics for two long hours which the lecture lasted. It was the last lecture for the day for me and I decided to return upstairs to go through the notes as I wasn’t really focused. I stood up but I didn’t give her a speech or even as much looked her way, I simply walked down the hall towards where the stairs was. I was boiling within as I climbed the stairs but I knew I had to be careful with dealing with this pest else I could just implicate myself. I didn’t want to be summoned by the dreaded student disciplinary committee because I could lose my cool if I decide to question her, I didn’t know much about girls but I knew most love to play the victim. I climbed up the stairs and sat down to read.

I hadn’t spent up to ten minutes there when she came and sat beside me. It was then glaring to me that she has decided to make my life miserable as we were barely up to three up there and there were countless other places where she could sit but she chose the one beside me. I continued reading, I didn’t want to give her the feeling that she was getting to me. She took out her books and started reading.

"You were quite vocal and all macho the other day, where are you so quiet now, huh? Has my Saviiioouuurrr in knight lost his charm?” She whispered

I knew what she was getting at but I remained quiet and continued reading.

“Scare of talking or you have suddenly forgotten making me promise to let you fvck me, huh Solomon.” She whispered yet again.
I still refused to say anything but I could hear the venom in her voice, she was getting angry.

“Answer me!” she hissed and threw my books off the table after that, but thankfully no one noticed but I was slowly losing my cool. I stood up to pick my books but she pulled me down and demanded that I answer her. Just who the fvck does this girl thinks she is? I said within me. I sighed and faced her, she had removed her glasses and I could see the madness in her eyes, she was ready for me, that I could tell but I wasn’t sure yet what she actually wanted. Was it to force me to say something I shouldn’t or was just one maniac whom I was unfortunate to meet? I didn’t understand girls then as I now do, so I just stared at her to be on the safe side. She stared back at me too and it continued like that with her scowl getting worse by the minute.

“You are just a pusssy like the rest of them, I actually thought you were different, I was wrong.” She said disappointingly and turned her face away from me in disgust. Wooh, she was actually one lonely chap, despite all her miss-unapproachable stunt and snobbish character, she was just lonely. I didn’t know when I laughed and then stood to pick up my book. She stared at me as I took my seat but then I just couldn’t stop laughing, so the person every guy, I mean every guy was scared to even whisper a word to was just a child. I continued solving my some integration and when I was done, I stood up and did something surprising, something I never thought I would do in public. I watched it in a movie and since she did not behave like the average Nigerian, I walked around the roll of chairs and walked behind her and whispered,

“You are a child to me.” before I gave her a quick kiss on right ear. I walked away as quickly as I did that with my beating heart in my hands. I didn’t hear anything from her afterwards and I barely saw her for the rest of the week until we met at the same place in the library on Saturday. I had expected something to happen to me but nothing did. She sat beside me, didn’t greet but instead brushed my fingers with hers. She lingered there for a few seconds before she faced her business of the night. I smiled and continued reading, deep down I knew I was punching beyond my weight but I didn’t care. I needed tutorials on how to keep such things burning but for now I had no teacher. God in his usual way answered my prayer and sent me one but now I know it wasn’t Him, it was something else but surely not Him.

CHAPTER 1 CONTD

“Mark this guy Solo na, abi wetin you dey think of sef.” Khris, one of my fellow classmates said for the umpteenth time but I was still giving room for the striker to evade me time and time again. Eventually, the guy scored and my mates let it loose on me, which really made me laugh.
“Solo, you dey craze abi, see as you make us lose that bet na. You no sey money no dey and exam don reach….” Josh remarked.

“I no no wetin do you today guy, e come be lyk say you get waist pain, how many rounds you go yesterday?” Tega asked, with laugher erupting all over the place but the truth was; I was extremely hungry and I didn’t want to ask any of my friends for assistance. I couldn’t tell if that was because I was shy or just plain proud. I apologized and decided to be on my way.

My department being part of the faculty of technology was preparing for the dean’s cup after we failed woefully at the Science cup the previous semester but we are knew as freshers, we had little or no hope of getting into the first team as our seniors were more favored. We trained with them after having our own training the previous day when the team captain tasked us to jog round the big field, which was actually the university’s official pitch until another was built. It was a daunting task and I nearly fainted after going round for the fifth time, I had barely gotten myself when the Captain tasked to go on short sprints. I was just chuckled, shook my head and took my leave. I was not only hungry but still very embarrassed after what happened during the practical of that Friday.

I had not still provided the test tube I was tasked to buy, there was no money and I had no idea of where to get the tube to begin with. I walked into the lab and thankfully, the lab assistant was nowhere to be found. I paid attention to what we were supposed to do on that day to get the caffeine from the Toptea tea bag. I followed the protocol and I was certain of a 10/10 but then Mercy said no for me, my luck ran out and the man I was evading returned. I had already returned my apparatus and had my workbook marked which I scored a nine but just as I headed out of the lab singing victory songs, he was coming into the premises through the same path. Our eyes locked and the next thing was him asking for the test tube. I told him I didn’t have it but he wouldn’t hear such and demanded that I provided it or I won’t be allowed out of the lab.

Some of my friends at this point pleaded on my behalf but I didn’t utter a word. After quite some time pleading with him and everyone knowing that I couldn’t replace an ordinary test tube, he allowed me out but promised that I wouldn’t be let in for the last practical if I didn’t produce the tube. I barely listened to his final speech before I walked out from the lab as I was so embarrassed and angry, I felt like strangling the jerk till he turned white. Somehow, I was happy that Francess wasn’t there but still my rep had already been destroyed by that act among those people. I walked out in anger but then I was called by Josh that we had practice.

As I walked back home, I wondered how I was going to get the tube since my mum kept saying there was no money, business has been bad and all that. I also thought of Francess and that the fact we have barely spoken a word to each other since the last time she brushed my hands with hers. It wasn’t just the fact that I wasn’t really good with this relationship stuff but the fact that she was an enigma and I just couldn’t figure out where I was supposed to start. I couldn’t tell where I should begin to enter her world, was it through books? But that won’t work as she was just as good as me in her books if not better. I could go to her hostel unannounced and ask to see her and we could end up on a little date walking round the school but then she can refuse seeing me and that could jeopardize everything.

Another thing was that, I didn’t know what she really wanted; a companion or a boyfriend. I decided that I was going to think about that but for now focus on the football match on the screen. I was just entering my hall through the back gate when I heard my name. I looked towards the direction of the call to discover the Finalist in my room signaling for me to wait. He was coming from the quadrangle and heading out,

“Uhm…Tolu dey use the room, so just help your brother out.” I simply nodded as I didn’t understand the jargons he just relayed. I wasn’t even planning on going to the room, I bided him goodbye and found my way into the viewing room. I sat down to watch my darling Arsenal dismantle the nervous Everton after which ensued an argument among those watching about how my team flatter to deceive and at the end of the day, they would get their usual fourth trophy. The argument heated up but as usual I didn’t involve myself in any as I had no strength to talk.

Then out of nowhere, I heard,
“O boy, them don send the money. Agbami don rescue hungry man oh.”
Immediately, I jumped and followed the little crowd heading towards the guy screaming now like he was on fire. One of us took the phone and found the information to be true which prompted the rest of us to empty our pockets in search of our phones. I was one of them but my phone was nowhere to be found, it then occurred to me that I left the phone in my room for charging. Quickly, I dash to my room for the phone. Hoping and praying that I would be one of those given the grant. I was one of the few that passed the examination but haven’t heard from them ever since. I hope I was given as 100k no be small money.

As I was just a few metres from my room, I slowed down and started walking and just then, my room’s door was flung open by Adesuwas putting on a short gown and arranging her disheveled hair. I saw beads of sweat on her forehead which suggested something strenuous. I ignored her and walked into the room and I was welcomed by very weird smell despite the fact that the finalist’s fan, which was the only fan in the room was at full speed. The curtains were spread across the windows and the unusual thing was that the fan was now in Tolu’s corner of the room. His bed sheet was all over the place and he was just on his shorts, sweating like he just jogged for over an hour. What happened here? I asked myself and then it occurred to me what might have occurred; the strange speech from the finalist and the huge grin on Tolu’s face which has been hidden for a long time now confirmed what I thought was just a rumour in the hall – dancing kerewa within the hall, which of course was banned in the ethics book given to us as soon as we were given keys to our various rooms. As I ignored his smile and opened my wardrobe to find a message notification on my phone; a message confirming that I was hundred thousand richer, I knew instantly that it was time to join the leagues of guys with babes and swags. I had the money and of course I had a teacher to lecture on what I didn’t know, a teacher that fulfills his promises, a teacher that knows how to get girls to do what he wants and most importantly, one who knows how to roll his waist. I smiled and despite both our smelling bodies, I hugged Tolu and that was the beginning of our total dessication of that room before we left home for the holidays.

A day I now curse today, If only my phone was with me, if only that dude didn’t scream of his findings, if only the message came the next day, if only……
