All vehicles do come with odometer but how do we know if the reading of the odometer is in Miles or Kilometers ? In some vehicles, this is specified as shown in the pix below while some the unit is not specified.

I'm begining to wonder if cars from say America or Europe come with specific odometer units. For example, can you all europe cars come with odometer unit of Km?

Please comments so we can be well informed to avoid falling into the hands of cheats.

Note: To convert Miles to Kilometers, we have:
1 miles = 1.609344 kilometers

I think this is a great topic that needed to be discussed.
Most Odometer screen, or panel comes with both readings, the kilometer and the mileage.
One with the bigger while other will be small.
One is on the out sides while the other will be on the inside.
The outer one and the bigger one is always the reading of the car.

See the image below and if u have further question, we cld all discuss.

Generally, European, Canadian, Japanese and Australian cars will be calliberated in km/h. The odometer will record in kilometres. British and North American models will be calliberated in both km/h and mph. The km/h will be the inner smaller markings. The odometer in these cars will record in miles.

In some models, the odometer is switchable between metric and imperial, regardless of the scale on the speedo dial. Switching from metric to imperial and vice versa, will also alter other settings - outside ambient temperature will toggle between Celsius and Fahrenheit, fuel consumption indicator (if fitted) will read either miles per gallon or litres/kilometer etc.

It's worth noting that vehicles exported from countries where velocity / distance is measured in miles, may have the speedo dial replaced with one that's calliberated in kilometres. Though the scale may be fairly accurate, the odometer will still record in miles! So, the odometer will not reflect a true kilometer reading. Again, if the display is switchable, then it'll be fine. Most are fixed, though they can be changed with suitable diagnostic software. Not the normal scanners, we're talking dedicated data changing software And as for the older mechanical type, you're pretty much stuck.

Some vehicles will give you the option of selecting the measurement unit. For instance, a Mercedes Benz or a BMW (Newer models though) on reset will ask you to select distance measurement unit (Km or Miles), temperature (F or C) and Radio Search selection (By Frequency or by Memory).

@Fhemmmy

What you are saying is that the unit of the total distance covered as shown on the odometer will bear the unit of the most conspicuous calibration.

For example, the odometer reading on odometer 1 pix should be in MILES while the odometer reading in odometer 2 pix should be in KILOMETERS

If i got it wrong please clarify.

This is very informative. I have been wondering but I'm better informed now courtesy this forum.

Is engine performance directly proportional to the odometer reading? Is it logical to say that as the odometer reading (total distance covered) of the car increases the engine of the car wears out? People do particularly ask for the odometer reading before buying a car. Should that be factor to consider?

Also, is it possible to change the value of the odometer reading? There are claims that some dealers do tamper with the odometer reading apparently to attract buyers.

Information on these will be highly appreciated.

@Fhemmmy thank you. At least i now know that the odometer reading in the pix below is in KILOMETERS

Please would like to know how one will read the distant cover using trip A or Trip B on a vehicle Odometer. Also if one read it, is it in kilometer or miles.

thanks

The knob on the odometer if pressed and held for like 3 seconds will zero the reading on an A or B trip but not that of the total reading. ( it will take a default reading of the S.I unit, mile or KM as explained by flemmy). This Trip A or B reading helps out to determine distances covered, e.g the distance of your home to your office or point A to B, or when u send your driver on an errand and he uses 2hrs and tells u it's traffic and your trip A shows u like 100km for a 30km journey dat one mean say your car na part time kabu-kabu wink

Very informative post that one could learn from.

But for the last 6 years mods have been putting posts that have absolutely nothing to do with our lives such as pictures of celebs going to toilets or in the pool on the front page. Thank God someone remember this long forgotten post after 6 years.

If you think God has forgotten you or He's not picking your call, just like this post you will be remembered one day grin

I prefer odometer in 'Miles' so that people won't actually know how fast I'm going. When they see 60m/hr on the outer scale, they won't know it's actually 100km/hr.

Once deceived my mum when taking her to village. She said 'what's wrong? That the way I'm overtaking vehicles seems I'm speeding.....I just pointed the odometer that I'm doing 100 and said those cars are moving slowly. She didn't know I was on 160km/hr already.
