Guys who knows the ADMIN password to a Spectranet CPE?

normal login is user/user

i'm looking for the admin one

Do you have the manual? If so check that, if not you can try searching for it (but I would have thought the normal login would be an admin sha)

Maybe you would have to reset the CPE (if it's an indoor one)

For me it depends on why you want to run Ubuntu in the first place. You just want to try it out or plan to work with it from the virtual environment? The former is okay but I wont advice the later.
IMHO the major con is that the performance is never the same compared to when it runs native. I will suggest you dual boot after testing on VM. Hope this helps.

Yes, I wanted to try it out working with it as a client machine in a virtual domain.
Instead I will just dual boot as you suggest. Thanks

Re: Ubuntu Linux by DharkPoet(m): 10:57am On Oct 01, 2016
Hi, I got an early 2008 MacBook from my cousin, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I decided to install Ubuntu on it using a USB drive .
During the installation process, I selected the option of formatting the entire drive so as to remove the Mac OS X. Just as Ubuntu was almost installed, I got an error 'unable to install bootloader', the only option I had was to choose the 'manually install bootloader option'.
Right now, I can only use the MacBook with the USB plugged to it, that is 'Live USB' mode. Without the USB, I get a GRUB error 'Minimal Bash like line editing... '. I know this problem must have been solved before or asked countless times, I hope someone could help me out better still point me in the right direction.

Should be 'user' as you have called out. Check under/around the CPE for default info.

My guess is when you made the bootable OS on the USB drive GRUB didnt install properly. Use Rufus or Unetbootin app (preferably Rufus) to make the bootable drive and then try installing it again. Hope this helps.

Using burg in place of grub makes my pc unbootable sometimes, then I'd have to use a livedisk to fix it.

But I love burg... Makes my pc look all geeky grin

For the sake of doing crazy things! Can you imagine this? Running VirtualBox in a Virtual Machine. I could not take it further (by installing another VM in VBox running inside a VM) because of hardware constraints. smiley

Good thing you had no plans of actually working with the guest in a guest

for SINGLE BOOT INSTALL ON MACS

Intel Macs have an EFI instead of a BIOS as in an 'IBM compatible' system. A different partition table scheme, GPT, is used on the hard drive.

You NEED TO and can convert your hard drive partition format with gparted on the Ubuntu LiveCD.

Insert the Ubuntu LiveCD into your Mac and Shutdown. Restart the Mac and hold the Option Key. When the boot selector screen comes up, choose to boot from the CD.

Choose you language and and select "Try Ubuntu". This won't make any changes to your Mac.

Once you get to the Ubuntu desktop, start gParted.

From gParted's menu, choose Device > Create Partition Table...

In the Dialog Box that comes up, heed the large, bold warning at the top, and click the "Advanced" triangle to enable the option to create a new partition table format.

Make sure to choose "msdos" for the type of partition table and click "Create".

Once your disk has been converted there should be no partitions in gParted. You can create your custom partition layout here or exit gParted and start the Ubuntu Installer and use it's partitioner to do the dirty work.

Proceed through the install as normal

It should work normally now.

You can use artha thesaurus. You can search for it in the Software Centre or if you have Synaptic.

Thank you very much. Out of interest are there any Bratannica or Encarta type offline encyclopedias for Ubuntu?

Synaptic should solve that automatically. It should pick the dependencies too. Unless you have held back some packages.......

But then, why not just use the terminal if you have identified the app you want to install via synaptic?

Is your system a 64-bit system? Have you enabled 32-bit installs?
If you haven't, try running
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
.
Then update your sources using
sudo apt-get update
and retry the installation.
