Rice.
Never have we had such a time when we had so much dependency on own local rice.

For long, our consumption has been satisfied by imported brands which are largely polished and have been stored for long periods

While the governmental policies may not have favoured some other products, rice has been a major beneficiary in many ways

Grown well in the northern central zone and sparsely in the northern eastern zone. Growing up, we might have had of Nupe rice which we were discouraged from largely due to the number of stones in then. Let's not also forget to celebrate our specially grown ofada rice in the south western region of the country.

Technology has brought about lots of improvement and our local brands are much better, stoneless and of different varieties. I dare say they are also more nutritious than most of the brands imported.

Varieties available include the
1. Long Grain
2. Brown rice
3. Tiny seeds/Short Grain

Aside the marketability as a staple grain, it is also processed as tuwo for the average northerner and for the adventurous southerner.

While the current price may be high, new harvest have started trickling in and prices may soon crash, at least for a while.

A bag of unprocessed paddy rice currently sells for between 11k-14k.

Processed local rice currently retails for between N350-N450 per modu depending on the seed quality/variety with a modu averaging 1.5kg.

Op.. kudos to you. I'd like to invest in either yam, rice, maize or beans (depending on which one ll get the best demand as at when due and can be started with 15k or less). I wanna ask if you're involved in Buying, storage and helping the person resell wen the market price is favourable nd then send the profit to the person..

Wanna start with something small nd storing with you then you ll hlp resell later on... While agreeing on any terms nd conditions.

egusi caught my attention initially buh it's time has passed. xo would be going for one outta the three as i foresee increase in price by December/January.

First, i don't think you should agree to "any terms and condition", some will only leave you at a lose. Always read through before signing or accepting any deals.

Secondly, yam may be available but this is not the best time to buy as produce will get bad before off peak period. Will say more about that later tonight. Beans is not available until november in most zones

That leaves you with only rice and maize for now.

Given the capital you wish to invest, i will suggest you do maize.
Re: Agric/grains Commodity Purchase/storage by Olayimikami: 5:02pm On Oct 23, 2016
Yam
Yam season is on as you may have seen so many threads about that on nairaland.

Your intention in investing in yam is to make the most profit within the least period in the least stressful way.

While buying yam now may be cheap, yam will be readily available from now till earlier february though cost may appreciate marginally upward.

Buying now means you really cannot guarantee a margin between now and february except you are retailing immediately or already in the biz and want to turnover your cash.

The other disadvantage of buying now is that the yams harvested now are not mature enough to last the 4-6 months duration which guarantees profit. You are more likely to lose 50% of your stock before february if you buy now and that is even with ample care

Anyone who advices you to buy yam now is either misinformed or just trying to cash in on immediate sale.

I have always said it and will repeat it again, buy only what you wish to consume or can sell before january if buy now.

If you wish to stock up for future sale, buy from late December/January and thank me later when you reap the reward.

Note that varieties also influences the storage duration of the yam

How??
Where can I get maize
Re: Agric/grains Commodity Purchase/storage by Olayimikami: 5:18pm On Oct 23, 2016
As earlier indicated,i will be delivering yams to lagos so intending clients do not necessarily need to come up north.

As a followup to that, i am currently in lagos setting up the modalities for it's workability.

I will also take out time to meet investors who had earlier indicated interest in the agro value chain but distance was a constraint.

Hopefully i will be in for the next one week in order to setup the current location and delibrate on alternative locations.

Orders for yam will be taken from second week in december and deliveries will only be initiated from 1st week in january.

Current location is in the Ejigbo-Isolo axis

As they say in lagos, eko o ni baje......

Ganmo/Amoyo has a market. Think its a monday or friday market. That's the closest to you. Not sure what the prices will be like though.

General prices are between N130-N160 per modu. Depending on modu size, a modu should weigh approx 1.5kg

68-75 modu should fill a 100kg bag.

Dry Pepper is a commodity which is well used in the northern and south western zone. It is primarily used as a chilli for spicy hot meals.

Currently, pepper is out but needs to be properly dried before it can be bagged for processing. The bagged pepper are stored in their dry state. It can either be sold in that state or grinded and sold as grinded chilli

Prices come as low as 15k for the industrious who believe they have the capacity to dry themselves while dry ones have entry prices of 22k-28k depending on the source and the quality

Prices go as high as 45k depending on demand and fall back as the peak period arrives. Likely exit this year may be around the 30-38k bracket

Note that not all dry pepper have excellent demand and some will do better in certain geographical zones than others
Re: Agric/grains Commodity Purchase/storage by Olayimikami: 10:44am On Oct 31, 2016
Sorghum
It is a genus of numerous species of grasses, important as a food crop and is the fifth most important cereal in crops grown worldwide. It is also one of the most important cereal food in the north

It has a multifarious usage which spans the brewery industry. Nigeria is currently the largest producer in West Africa and a world leader in food grain sorghum production

It is sparingly grown in Nigeria in the north western zone.

Before now, it was basically used as a grain primarily for human feeding. However, with the high cost of maize, it has become an essential alternative to corn in feed formulation.

This year, we may experience a growth in the price of sorghum if maize prices hit the roof. Majority of the users if these commodity are in the livestock sector.

Current price is 12-16k a bag in katsina and environ. Appreciates to 20-25k every year. Prices differ based on seed quality

500 is just 5 tonnes. Provided the pricing is right, one client can pick it up. If you have difficulty though, do let me know and i will try to source for a buyer

I hope you have treated the maize?

Your location also influences your capacity for prompt sales

Of all three though, soya seems the least purchased in the open market.

Think i blundered there. That's 50 tonnes, let me have a location and i can revert.

Better to reduce it gradually and retain only 10-20max for the long haul.
