That uninterrupted power supply caught my attention. So this place exists in Rivers State. Well I know those seven states that generates less to the government than this island are Northern and Western States. Poor ass states enjoying Niger Delta money.

Stereotypical dude; how does ur comment related to the topic, must u comment?

Did it occur to you that the O.P may be referring to foreigners maybe?

Even foreigners donot need a visa to enter the island. Any foreigner entering Nigeria comes through an airport and anything concerning visa is done at the airport. Once the foreigner is cleared, s/he can visit anywhere in Nigeria.

They do have very stable power supply & apart from the highly guarded and fenced NLNG 'town', the rest of Bonny is nothing special.
I live in the LNG RAs.
Outside is not better or safer than Ajegunle in Lagos, except for the regular power supply and water.

So because there is plenty affluence in VI/Lekki axis, and surrounded with serious poverty in ikorodu, Ajegunle etc, Laosians should one day start killing themselves!

Government job is to create enabling environment which abounds in Bonny, Ther is job for those who wants to work, the infrastructure is the best in Nigeria. that some are still leaving in poverty is not because of Oil companies or government, it simply fact of life.

ND people will continue to live in penury until they change their attitude, government can not just be distributing money to people, you have to add value to get value. Even if government decide to be distributing money monthly, some people will still live in penury!.

And mind you there are many towns in ND that have 24/7 power supply; they are simply tied to the oil companies plant power sources. it is termed interdependence in the Nigerian oil sector parlance!. If you shut me down, you shut your power source down.

however, some bastards who mostly live in the cities are never satisfied and hence always wants more from the government and the companies. These are the militants, They are the ones benefitting from the amnesty and reaping there people off.

Think about it, There is Federal allocations, there is NDDC, there is Niger delta ministry, there is Oil company development MOUs in all oil producing communities, there is project based (by contractors) community development mostly cash collected by chiefs and elites in liu of employments. Most of the Elites/Chiefs are the manpower supplier to the companies.

Viking007:

cheesy The poverty in that island is just shameful. People living in zinc/wooden houses. Despite all the wealth surrounding them.

That's why I dont really blame all those Niger Delta Avengers/activists.

I think where he meant was where the workers are staying because I was there in 2007 and I was issued a temporary visa before I could enter the residential area. No visa, no entry and exit so you must guard it jealousy.

@OP,
As others have posted, the pictures you posted and painted is the NNLG quarters, for foreign and local staffers of the NNLG. In those quarters there is apartheid, because certain areas are reserved for foreigners. I say this with all authority because I worked there in 2006 for about six months before I was transfered across the river to ALSCON in Akwa Ibom state. ALSCON which stands for Aluminium Smelting Company of Nigeria,is similar to NNLG in Bonny.
Beautiful residences built for the staffers with all comfortable amenities while the indigenous people of the vicinity wallow in abject poverty.
The 24 hours electricity is restricted to the NNLG and provided by gas turbines and not PHCN or NEPA,while ghettos like Finisima,Bonny town and Ikot Abasi wallow in abject poverty and darkness.
These are the main reasons for militancy in the Niger Delta.
Forcadoes in Delta State is another example of a developed town/city surrounded by abject poverty.
I know all these things because if you wanted to eat real local foods such as fresh fish,Banga soup and starch, you had to leave the developed cosmopolitan areas to the ghettos to eat proper African foods and while there you could sense the poverty, anger and tension of the indigenous people. The anger of the Niger Delta people in the swamps is real and can only be assuaged by proper development of the area by the government.

While I agree about the wealth in the midst of poverty is a reality in the Niger Delta area. Is militancy and destruction of oil pipelines the solution?
While I sympathise with the people of the Niger Delta area. I feel their militancy should start with their leaders, governors and representatives, that pretend to represent their intrests but actually use the cause of the Niger Delta to feather their own nests by using the youths to blow up pipelines, negotiate with the government at the centre, collect settlements and then build havens for themselves, selfishly in Maitama,Banana Island or abroad, while abandoning their people in abject poverty in the Niger Delta.
The militancy since Isaac Adaka Boro has done nothing for the people of the Niger Delta but push them further down the poverty line, while producing a few multi billionaires in dollars amoung their so called leaders ala Tom Polo, Edwin Clark ,Assari Dokubo and the grand master,James Onanefe Ibori.

Was this developed by Independent Nigeria?...or by the British and just happened to be maintained to date? ...and are the residents local or is it more like an expat community?...just curious.

That's a very good question.

I haven't been there before though, but if you go there you"ll discover its a community of expats- the same reason countries like Singapore developed.

I was discusing with some novices here few days ago about a theory I' am currently developing to explain why some countries would develop and why some wouldn't, and this just fits.

I don't know whether you're African, but this type of question of yours is what Africans should be worried about. How did Bonny Island develop to European standard in the middle of the jungle?

The answer will lead you to a frightening future where what we call education will lead us back to slavery. In the next 100 to 200 years nothing of value in Africa would be owned by Africans. Foreigners are going to own up everything in our lands in a new form of slavery. I can see the future clearly!! Winston Churchill's vision of a new world order WILL be achieved.

"The rich nations MUST rule the world, and they're to be assisted by educated people in poor countries"............Winston Churchill.

Sorry for derailing.

milliatancy was birthed long after the discovery of oil, it started after the patience of these communities wore out, don't talk like oil exploration started today ,even in that same community, from comments you can see that just on the other side of the wall of the nnlg is the complete opposite
You have a point. Things would be better if those militant realize that the destruction of those pipelines equates to the destruction of their land.

before millatancy started, the effect of oil exploration and neglect had already ravaged these communities, it the neglect that birthed militancy
