Dear nairalanders, I need your input/advice on this: I got admission for a master's degree program in the United States. Before I left Nigeria, my sponsor assured me that all was well. When I got to the school, I registered for courses and when it was time for him to transfer money for me to pay for my tuition, he started telling me stories that his business is going down and advised me to defer the admission.

The school officially resumed on the 3rd of January this year and I have only attended one class. Now I'm thinking of deferring the admission then go back to my home country, apply to a college so I could enter with the privilege of the institution I first applied to and seek for a transfer from the institution to the college I will be applying to while I'm back to Nigeria.

can this work? if I'm able to defer the admission, go back to my home country and apply to a college, will I be allowed to enter the United States again? will the institution agree to transfer me to the college. I really need your advise to make a decision.

Sorry for what happened but this happens all the time.... Sponsoring someone abroad is not an easy feat at all so except if its a parent ....most likely stories that touch do enter

If you defer you be out of status and need to apply for reinstatement

Hello Guys.. hope y'all doing fine...

So I just finished my BSC and wanted to go overseas (USA) and do my masters, or maybe any professional course/experience another country( not necessarily doing the masters)

I had Germany in mind but after discussing with my parents and close friends they said germany is out of it because of the language barrier and other issues I don't want to bore you with

So my dad contacted a travel agent who helped his friend's newphew and others enter the US to make inquiries..

So below is the 2 options (and Fee) the man gave

1. 2 year B1/B2 visa (tourist Visa I guess)

Requirements: intl passsports, visa fee (#54,000), travel history (#35,000), Documentation(#40,000) and then #650,000 to be paid to him once visa is out, he ddnt mention any ticket fee which means the total amount will go higher (he said I ll be going with a family moving to the US). And he also said he could help work this Visa for onward movement to Canada,

2. Student Visa

Requirements: intl passports, university certificate, secondary school cert, transcripts, processing fee of #300,000, CV

And then he further said once I get an offer, I ll be required to make a deposit of $3000, and then Visa application fee of $1000

So This brought up some questions in my mind I wanted to clarify before making any payment to the man which I hope people here with experience could help me answer (please!)

1. Are these fees correct (or at least within the range) or the man is just trying to rip me off?

2. How much should be my budget (school fees, accommodation and all) in my course of getting a masters degree in the US?

3. Is there any possibility of getting any job with B1/B2 Visa?

4. Is it advisable to skip NYSC in pursuance of a masters degree overseas?

I ll be so happy if you guys can help me answer these questions

Thanks

You want to enter one chance be that...getting visa is one thing but after visa what next... paying someone 650k just to help you get to america and then what ?.....be there illegally shocked ..... you will be stuck in a place of limbo which can drag for years. . You cant work u cant school you cant do anything..b1b2 is strictly for visiting and come back within 6 months . That you can do yourself and dont need to give someone 650k +40 + 30

Visa doesnt mean anything oo. Be sure of what you want for the future which is to get to the next step properly and legally...if its school then target to attend the school u can afford or score high in test score and find funding... with school you can progress and get a job that files h1b after that ...or you try canada that has potential of you applying for PR after masters ... if not tears and headache lingers ahead .

Go for nysc then take that nysc year to prepare well for your student application if you truely want to use the student visa route ... All the info you need is right here and u know the best part. It is FREE grin . All you need is data / internet

Take your legs and run fast from agents . From what he has given it will create more problems

I dont even have much to say to you than 1) RUN FROM THAT AGENT. 2) go for your NYSC,between now and NYSC, read the part 10 of this thread at least. I am sure after this, you will be versed in how to go about the application et al 3) RUN FROM THAT AGENT

1. The fees are not correct

2. You will need to do some work yourself, you don't need any agent to apply to schools or get student visa, iMO they don't do anything. They basically just swindle the gullible ones. Talking about visa application fees of $1000, thats ridiculous.

What you need to do, is know the course yoy are putting in for M.S. degree and schools that offer it-that can give you admission based on your profile ie GPA, test scores et al. Then you will need to qrute GRE and TOEFL. Apply to the schools yourself. Hopefully get admission. From there you apply for visa. You get it. That's it. But its not hard and its not easy. You just need to put in some work

3. Legally you are not supposed to

4. Yiu have the prerogative to decide that. If you will be back in the country to seek employment, you can just chill and do it. Use your service year to prepare for the exams and your applications.

With that post up there, we dont know the value of this thread at all. Imagine someone wants to go and pay that amount of money to an agent just for admission offer and visa? ahh. When they say you people should read previous thread,it will be as if someone is wicked. And the sad truth is that, some people are paying that amount to agents in Nigeria. If you cant get to work,do small research about the whole process and be proactive about your life, then you have yourself to blame. Mehn Agents are Wicked!
