Why I Will Not Hire A One-man Developer Again by whaithee(m): 9:18am On Mar 06, 2017
I have resolved not to hire the service of a one-man developer. By one-man, I don't necessarily mean one person doing the entire development. He may have other developers he delegates part of the job to. But as long as it's not a structured organization, I'm not interested.

After wasting close to 5 months for a project that was supposed to last for one month (at most 6 weeks), I'm yet to get a final product.

Communication has been horrible.

Despite that I had to go out of my way to pay him a second installment, which was not part of the agreement, just to make sure the project goes on.

I know there are exceptions. There are respectable and reputable developers out there, but I don't have the luxury of trying again. I'll rather deal with a company with a physical presence and structure.

If you know any good App development company to develop Android and iOS apps, please recommend.

Thank you.

try out sci.ng. You shouldn't be disappointed

It depends on what you were building. And you didn't say how much you paid this developer.

If you are thinking of looking for a software firm, just know that they still outsource projects they can't handle to external developers.

It all lies on meeting the right and level headed person to do business with - period.

I checked them out. They offer training in software development. From the website of their parent company, which offers software services, I don't see any service for app development though.

We created and sent a more than detailed documentation of the app before negotiation.
Note that my partner and I were web developers before we decided to focus on building a business.
It had nothing to do with how much paid. The price was very reasonable, and we didn't do any hard negotiation to arrive at the price.

As for the firm outsourcing, I don't have a problem with that as long as they deliver a good job and on time.

Thanks

@op, I get your point but truly it depends on the project agreement and some project can be a little bit of an hassle and as such, a programmer or a developer is still open on learning new things during project execution, no man Is am island of knowledge

A lot of factors may cause the delay in a project.

In my own experience, sometimes the issue may be from the client brief.

In some instances the client may want something and the developer is thinking something else.

It also lies in the experience of the developer.

And the very common one is issue with 3rd party integrations. I once tried to integrate a 3rd party mobile payment sdk and it took me more than 3 days. Ordinarily it would not take me more than a few hours but the documentation for the SDK was very brief and the sdk itself was buggy.

Anyway i am available for outsourcing (IOS,Android,Windows)

Yeah, they offer trainings, which involves exposing the trainees to real life projects that are contracted to them. The guy who owns that place is a seasoned programmer. And I can vouch for his honesty.

Trust me, I'll perfectly understand if this was the case.

But 5 months?
Epileptic communication.
Transferring blame to the person he gave part of the job.
Even he had to admit severally that he had messed up. But why not make up for it by delivering on the project. Up till now, reaching him on phone is often uncertain.
Now he keeps reminding me that he has a lot of things to do. Even went to the extent of sending a number of someone he gave part of the project for me to deal with him directly.

It's all unprofessional.

But 5 months?

Which was why we took time to document what we wanted, with screenshots. The communication was clear enough, even for a budding developer. I was once a web developer. In fact at some point I had to wonder if they actually read the documentation because we had to keep repeating what was clearly stated there.

If I reconsider, I'll contact you.

Thanks

I wish I can hear developer point(s) also.

Of A truth some clients are also funny, for instance, a client once contacted me for a web project he made so much emphasis that he needs it ready within two weeks, so I made it a priority, believe me it's over 6 months now,I use to be the one always disturbing him the contents and d likes, when through with a part, I will wait for weeks before he can review and give me go ahead.

The story is just funny, trust me organization disappoints more, and they bring the project to people like us.

This is where the law comes in. In more litigious societies, failing to fulfill a contract like that could lead to serious legal consequences!!. Lost revenue, productivity etc.
All the contract freelancers i know have stories to tell of their clients. Clients who don't pay the full amount etc.

Op, maybe the task turned out to be more complex that it initially seemed. It happens all the time in programming. You start out on a project thinking you'll be through in a month but the project stretches on for far longer. Two most bidders to quickly secure work underestimate how long it will take to get the job done. Words are cheap. They just want to impress the client and win the contract. Those on the other hand with more professional work ethics and high reputation of being highly dependable may charge much and clients trying to go cheap will skimp on money only to end up with cheaper quality labour and high level of dissapointment. In the end they get what they pay for.

Am sorry you got involved with a complete quack, from the look of things he may not even know jack and commission the project to a very cheaper developer who are often quacks too. Its rare to see clients that will give you detailed documentations and for you to have gone to the extent of giving him a full documentation and he still couldn't deliver shows he is not a developer. You don't just have to give up like that, most "structured" companies will charge you so high and may still outsource your job to folks like us here on Nairaland, all I will advice next time is observe during discussions if the person is truly a programmer or just a business man then have a timeline for both you and the guy or company, and makesure it is followed religiously

Like some dev has already mentioned, the issue might be as a result of unclear project details or maybe the developer himself is unable to handle the project.

This is why it is most important to reject any project outside ones comfort zone.

This is my work handle on NR. If you want a seasoned software dev, you can hit me up. I use React Native for mobile app development. Akhisonthecoder [at] outlook.com

Why not pay him for a prototype of your idea project before committing.
