You've been listening to too many talkshows. If you want flat tax, go back to Naija.

As long as top tax rate is around 40%, I'm fine with it.

It is actually aimed at the billionaires and millionaires, not at the middle income professionals in the £43,000-£200,000 range.

If you drop the top-tax rate much below 40%, your countries tax-base will be wiped out and deficits will deepen. So I don't mind being out-of-pocket a bit knowing that it is aimed at the multimillionaires. The actual hit to my pocket from the step change from 20% to 40% in UK is just over £4k, but I will rather pay an extra £4k than have the Duke of Cambridge save £100m on his tax bill . . . . . cos in the long run, we will need to find that £100m from somewhere and they will still come back to tax us for it eventually.

What this video should have done is focused on the real agitators ie the billionaires seeking to wipe off billions of tax liability rather than trying to pass it off as the difference between carpenters who work hard and those who don't. I'm happy to pay my £4k.

Why should we target multimillionaires?

Are you saying its ok for some people to pay 0 in taxes just to punish the millionaires? Some of these millionaires started from the same level as you. They took risks we werent willing to take, they worked hours we weren't willing to work, studied courses you werent willing to study to be where they are

So why should they be punished for working harder or taking risks

If you are increasing taxes on inheritance, I am fine with that. But not the afrodoc2 guy in my class who is a geek, who studied while we are partying, did all nighters in class while nihilist was doing all nighter and sweating on Nkechi and now became a neurosurgeon making $1m a year.

E.g Osewa the owner of NL was my mate in Ife, he was always reading had no social life aside going to fellowship ECU and studying(worked harder). by Year 3 he decided to dropout(took a risk) I looked at him like an idiott then for doing that

15yrs later he is making 100M a year I am making say 5M a year but I want govt to tax him more and punish him for doing what I couldnt do

If you cant relate to Seun, shebi you sabi tkb wey we dey post on here before
my guy tkb dropped out of paid employment, took a risk invested his money which I was too scared to do. Should they be punished?

It ain't personal. Budgets are budgets and numbers are numbers. This is the most efficient way for most countries to achieve budget.

This is the story you should have given us to start, not telling us story about carpenters.

The truth is, the old political arguments of the 1980s and 1990s about Reaganite tax-cuts to fit Says law are getting redundant. I trust the GOP to still be peddling such views in the 21st century.

When you have the likes of Zuckerberg and Elon Musk telling us the days of Universal Welfare are almost due because they already see how automation and globalisation is eviscerating jobs, then you should know that Says Law is redundant in the modern economy.

These guys like Zuck and Elon are the Industrialists of our age, not Henry Ford, and they have told us korokoro what it is. The day I saw a car being made with no human input - tens of thousands of parts put together by automation, na the day I shock. More tax dollars given back to the wealthy will only mean more robots and more outsourcing, rather than supply-side stimulus and job-creation in the economy.

And don't get me wrong, I'm a staunch conservative.

There are arguments to be made for each view point. However the progressive rate tax is the one that gives the government the most revenue without impoverishing the man on the streets.
Tax revenue is a very important source of govt income and a flat rate would cause more hardship to a larger portion of society without achieving the same benefit.
Also remember it is the social benefits made possible by this progressive tax system that enables millionaires like nihilist and chic2pimp to sleep without broke ass guys robbing them every night.

You know dayo is a heartless redneck lol.
But what I do is simple.
I don't get paid as an individual. I set up a family trust as a business identity. So my income gets paid into the trust which is not taxed. At the end of the financial year the money is distributed on paper amongst my family members who are trustees. In this way every person pays about 22-25% instead of the 45% I would have been paying.

The aim of most of the liberal tax proposal is 1 to take more and more from millionaires

The only millionaires I have problems withare those who maybe inherited their money

If a nigg@ took risk and worked hard for his money, He shouldnt be punished for it

I am not conservative like that. I even support abortion at any term even if its 2 days to delivery as long as the mother is not okay with the pregnancy

But I believe in a life where there are consequences for actions, Lierals believe in freedom without consequences. WHen I argued with my dad as a teenager about him being to strict, he told me about Independence and with freedom comes responsibility.

You cant YOLO in your youth and expect no consequences for it

If all the Zukerberg and millionaires too decided to waste away their youths will we have any inventions to celebrate?

I want to be rich and I dont want some dudes who is enjoying now to think my riches should be punished because he is poor

The man who built that car put in brain work and he should enjoy the reward of it not get taxed away by govt

Amen oo.. grin

Nah but Dayo is one funny Ultra Conservative Fella. As you rightly pointed out, the government has to generate revenues somewhere, somehow. The good roads we enjoy weren't done free of charge . In the Uk, we get Free HealthCare and Schooling right up to the age of 18. We all know those too aren't free. But hey I'm sure the govt would happily charge every citizen the same rate of tax if Dayo is willing to cough up the budget deficit they are likely to incur.

This is just silly reasoning. Why should everyone just sit down and hope when there is a chance to better their lives and that of their loved ones?....And btw in the UK, not only is the govt making it harder to claim benefits/handouts, they are actually reducing the amounts you can claim. That I think is the way forward not just totally scrapping it.

The only way to success is through hardwork and taking risks, Those who have done it successfully shouldn't be punished by making them finance the way of life of those who didnt.

The spirit of America, is invent something, take a risk, start a business and keep most of your money, Nothing motivates more than success especially financial success. That is why communism and socialism crumbled

All the people trained in Communist countries all are trying to flee to where they get their reward for their hard work not where govt takes it away and redistribute wealth

Your video analogy is a perfect description of what is wrong in America. The American tax system is a hybrid of the utilitarian perspective and altruism. A situation where one is punished for daring to be ambitious and successful because your success which is achieved through nights of pain and challenges is utilized at caring for the lower class in the social strata, even against your wishes.

The system that punishes the rich through uneven taxes is not only unfair, it promotes the sense of entitlement in the lower and some middle class have. I live and work my ass off in the United States, by God's grace my definition of ideal success is within grasp, however, sometimes i feel deflated because my energy and ambition is used to cater for many who have decided never to work because they are practically living off my hard-work.

Tom and dick could have earned as much as Harry, however, Tom worked a mere 20 hours a week as the only source of income for his family, while his brother worked 40, and a wife who worked 10 hours. It is imperative to note that each had equal opportunity to become successful, the beam was balanced, however, 2 brother made personal choices that limited their earning power. The distasteful part of the analogy which is prominent in the United States, is the fact that their choices were not limited because of health complications, they chose not to work more because they wanted to enjoy their lives!!!!

Millions in America are stuck in the lower class because there is no justification in working, not necessarily because there are no opportunities to work and earn more in the US. If i was Harry, i would sell my property after 2 years and watch the private street become "Ajegunle". Tom and Dick wanted safety, however, with improved life comes more responsibility. The current tax system is the reason why the gap between the rich and poor would continue to increase, this system also promotes racism of some sorts because the average Caucasian American believes poor African Americans are rooted in poverty because they are lazy.

While Dick's idea is not fair, i think it is the more ethical choice between two extremes. Each person should pay 12% of their total income, i.e: Tom: $3,000, Dick: $9,000 and Harry: $18,000.

DID ANYONE NOTICE HARRY WAS NOT AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A SUGGESTION?
