Within seconds,I was out the door.
"Dad, no please" I pleaded almost in tears now.
Daddy let him go and turned towards me with a puzzled expression.
He came close to me and said "Baby, what's the matter?". I dropped down on my knees sobbing loudly now.
Aunt Liz,dad's immediate elder sister entered the compound at that moment. She rushed to my side "Milly baby, what's wrong?"
I ignored her and kept on sobbing. She turned to my dad. "What have you done to her, Brian?"
"I'm just as stunned as you are to see her crying. Why don't you direct your energy at making her talk instead of firing at me?" He replied getting annoyed.
"It's me, it's all my fault" I managed to voice out between sobs.
"Brian, get her inside the house now" Aunt Liz said with the tone of authority she always carried.
Daddy lifted me into the house. He carried me upstairs to my room with Aunt Liz and Jason following him behind. He placed me on the bed.
"I'm sorry dad,I really am."
"Jamille, I still don't understand what you're talking about."
I broke into another round of tears. My body was shaking violently. Aunt Liz came to me and hugged me tight. She released me after few minutes.
"Do you need some time alone dear?" She asked softly.
I shook my head. "I'll talk now". I paused to watch the expression on their faces.
"Edet actually called me many times on that Saturday night but I refused to pick the call."
"What?!" Daddy exclaimed. I shuddered in fear shifting closer to Aunt Liz.
"Brian! Let the poor girl finish before you howl like a dog"
"I'm sorry dad. The point is, he was fond of pestering me so I didn't take his call serious. Jason, you too, please forgive me."
"Is that really an excuse,Jamille?" Dad asked.
"I mean, how could you do this? You should have known that something was wrong. And why the hell didn't you tell me he had been pestering you all the while. We could have sorted it out. Haven't I warned you not to keep things to yourself young lady, haven't I?" He was yelling now.
"Brian, calm down. It isn't the poor girl's fault that her mum's gone." Aunt tried to defend me.
"Nice argument sis, but it's baseless. Answering the call would have made them leave their silly party on time. Leaving on time would have landed them home few minutes earlier. And the damn few minutes would have saved the life of my wife." His eyes were red now.
He barged out of the room and slammed the door shut.
I turned to my brother who stood as still as a stone. "Jason?"
He raised his head to look at me but didn't utter a single word. He walked towards the door and opened it,then he paused briefly.
"I'm not mad at you Mille, I just need to clear my head. The room's too stuffy for me." He said without turning back. He left the room, closing the door so softly that I didn't hear the click. I turned to Aunt Liz and fell into her waiting arms. I wept bitterly. I could tell she felt my pain too.
"It's alright child. It's not your fault. Everything's gonna be OK" she kept on comforting me with her hands gliding down by back. I had no tears to cry again. My head hurt like crazy. I just closed my eyes and lay on her laps. We stayed that way till it was lunchtime. She got up to prepare something while I laid back pretending to be asleep.

Aunt came back upstairs later on. She was carrying a plate of food. She dropped it on the stool by my bed and tapped me gently.
I tried opening my eyes but it hurt a lot to try. "Aunt,I'm awake" I answered her, giving up on opening my eyes.
"Milly baby,I brought food. Sit up,let aunt feed you."
I shook my head in the negative. "I don't think I can. I'll probably throw up."
"It doesn't hurt to try, does it? Besides,I'm always here to clean up if you eventually throw up."
I shook my head again. Aunt always had her way with words. She coaxed me till I sat up. She opened the plate to reveal pepper soup ready to be consumed. I stretched my hand to carry the spoon but she was faster. "Let me do it" she said with a small smile.
She lifted the spoon to my lips and I granted it entrance. She fed me till the soup remained only a little in the plate.
"I'm okay aunt. I can't take any more". She nodded.
"Later on,I'll bring something more solid for you to take. I'm happy you could at least take a little soup." She planted a kiss on my forehead before packing up the plates and heading towards the door.
"Watch it!" She exclaims as Jason opened the door swiftly just as she's about to turn the knob.
"Sorry aunt" he shifted from her path.
"Ah its no problem. I didn't want to be soaked in pepper soup. Trust me,the smell is only good for the stomach and not on a dress."
He smiled at her and she walked past him.
He took a seat on the bed beside me. We sat silent for five minutes.
"Aren't you going to talk to your bros?"
"I guess it should be you doing the talking first and not me" I replied.
"OK, so how're you?"
"To be honest, I don't even know"
"And why is that?" He pressed on.
I stared at him like he just grew three new horns.
"Is there poop on my head?" He asked and laughed a little.
"Jason, how could you laugh at a time like this?" I asked in bewilderment.
"Laughter's good for the soul, dear. I've been mourning for a week now. I'll die if I don't give myself a break."
"A break indeed. You wouldn't be saying that if you had a hand in your own mother's death" I spat out through clenched teeth.
"Stop saying that, you had no hand in it. There's nothing you could have done to stop her death." He sighed before continuing.
"I knew you'd take it hard on yourself. Don't mind dad's outburst. He's still grieving just as we are. I'm sure he didn't mean all that."
I stood up from the bed and started pacing.
"Jason, why? Why do you keep doing this to me,why?"
"I'm actually floating here Mille. What the heck are you talking about?"
"Daddy screamed his lungs out. Why don't you do same? You're killing me by acting all nice. Yell at me Jay,yell. I did something horrible. Yell so I can feel better. Scream Jay."
Jason just looked at me sparking like a live wire.
"I want to die,Jay. I just want to die. Why don't you just get mad at once so I'll have enough reason to die."
I was crying seriously. I lay down on the floor. I heard the door open and close. Jason had left the room. I hit my head on the ground repeatedly. It felt like it wasn't enough. I got up and went to the dresser. I threw everything on it down. I punched the mirror and it broke, wounding me. I didn't care about the pain.
It wasn't up to the pain in my heart. I got tired and sat on the floor. The tears had stopped flowing. I heard the door open. I didn't want to see anybody.
"Please leave. Whoever you are, I don't want to see your face."I breathed out without looking back.

Jason

I raced to my room. I was so angry. I wondered what kind of sister I had. She's really getting on my nerves. How could she want me to be mad at her when a normal human would prefer the calm and gentle way. She has always been soft. I knew she was so fragile at heart but I didn't expect her to react like this.
I heard glass breaking in her room but I couldn't bring myself to go there. She's breaking me by acting this way but she's totally unaware. If only mum was here, all these wouldn't be happening. I heard a knock on the door and got up to open it. Aunt Liz was standing there. I made way for her to come inside the room.
"Jason,I came to talk to you." She began.
"What about aunt?"
"Your sister" she stated and waited to see my reaction. I did my best to maintain a straight face.
"I heard when you both were talking in her room."
"I presume you heard her crazy outburst. I mean, aunt, who the hell does that?"
She sighed and said "Talk to me dear, let everything out. I'm right here"
"Aunt, it's just frustrating. For goodness sake, I'm looking out for her. How could she say all that to me? I didn't blame her. I knew it wasn't her fault. Must she be so hard on herself?" I talked for minutes. Aunt Liz just sat silent, listening to my every word.
"I'm gonna ask you a favour dear" She finally spoke up.
"And what would that be aunt?"
"Just give her time. I guess that's her own of grieving her loss. Would you do that for me?" She asked me in the mildest tone I ever heard from her.
"But it hurts aunt"
" I know it does hon. Just give it a try, OK?"
"I'll try. I'm not promising anything just yet."
She smiled and replied, "Sounds like a promise to me. Now, I need to rush home and pick some clothes and foodstuff. Thankfully, Mr. Hubby isn't home so I'll just give him a call and let him know what's up. Am I permitted?"
"Uhm... Permission remains ungranted till I get a hug" I replied causing her to smile. She leaned close and hugged me.
"Permission granted ma'am" we both laughed and she left the room.
I kept staring at the door even after she had left. I smiled as I thought about Aunt Liz.
She's my best aunt in my dad's family. She's 49 but has the looks of a 30 year old. She's never ageing. The woman just knows how to light up the room in all situations. I specifically admire the air of authority she carries with her. Fair and a bit plump. She does not lack in the height department too. Sometimes, I catch myself wishing she wasn't older so I'd marry her. A better than great cook she is.
She and her husband are a perfect match. They play like newlyweds each time they come visiting. The only thing lacking in her life is a child. They'd been married for many years with no child. She still believed she would have her own child. She had trained two orphan girls from childhood.
They're both in the university. The first, studying medicine and the second studying pharmacy. She treats them like her own. I just hope she has her wish granted.
I decided to go check on my sister. I found her on the floor. I lifted her onto the bed. I got the first aid box and cleaned up her wounded knuckles. I packed the broken pieces of glass on the floor and arranged the room as quietly as I could.
Having done all that, I went back to my room to have a well deserved nap.
