Even if it had to be a love story, let it have soul.

Let it deviate a bit, no twirl it to be entirely different from the Telemondos we are repeatedly served with on this thread

Chapter 4

Rain woke up at about 5:00am, quite earlier than her waking time. She was rather too excited for someone who barely slept through the night.
Her travelling bags and luggage had already been packed the week before. She hurriedly brushed her teeth and took her bath, whistling and humming all the while, before realising too late that her noise would wake grandma up.

'Ah! Nana, sorry to wake you up. Good morning ma'. She sputtered. She had almost bumped into grandma who standing in the dimly lit passage.

'Did someone win a lottery today or something? Grandma inquired.

'Uhm not exactly, but someone will be going to Lagos for the first time today! She squealed in excitement then shut her mouth with her hands immediately before mumbling a sorry.

'I'll just go prepare you breakfast while you keep at whatever you were doing'. Grandma finally said

'Not hungry'. Rain snorted. On getting no response, she decided to add 'Okay, I'll just eat on the way'. She knew firsthand that nothing she says would stop Nana from cooking her breakfast.

She went into her room and stood before the mirror to take a good look at herself. She was putting on a green cotton shirt that fitted snugly, her petite figure, together with a black pleated, midi skirt. Her long and dark, wavy hair was packed into a messy bun, letting a few tendrils escape and fall freely on her small oval face. It was her hair that often gave her hybrid origin away. She had large and deep black eyes such that when directed at you, could send shivers down your spine. Her friends would often tease her saying, her eyes were what made the boys flounder when approaching her for they would feel she was searching their souls and reading their minds. She smiled in nostalgia revealing the prettiest pair of dimples and dentition perfectly arranged in her tiny but luscious lips.
She stepped aside and took a frame of her late mother's photo hanging on the wall. She stared at the image before her and smiled at the striking semblance. If her mom were not darker, they would have passed for twins, for every single feature on her face is a replica of her moms. Except her narrow nose, which grandma said were from her dads. It was a mystery they were no photos of him.
She wiped a small tear from her cheek and ran her hands over the frame.

'I miss you mom, I really do. Why did you have to go and leave me behind? Why didn't you stay or take me along with you?'.

As if on cue, she felt the tip of something crispy from one corner of the frame and curiously shook the frame harder. Immediately, a crumpled piece of paper dropped from behind the picture. She assumed it had been hidden in between the picture picture and the wood for a long time.
Quickly, she picked it up and began to unfold it.

'Your food is ready'. Grandma called, startling her.

'I am coming' she answered and tucked the paper into the pocket of her traveling bag.

'What did you Cook'. She continued, walking towards the kitchen.

'Fried yam, eggs and pap'. Grandma called back.

'Hmm.. Sounds tempting, but I'm late already, any delay now and I might not catch the first bus'. She was now in the kitchen with grandma.

'Alright then, I'll just put it in this flask for you to take along with you'.

*********************

Rain was exhausted and her shoulders drooped from the heavy luggage she carried. Grandma had packed a bagful of rice, yams, onions among others and insisted she carried them all.

'This woman will not kill me today'. She cursed under her breath.

She was now in the park where shell board a bus to Lagos. She went to obtain her ticket, came back and secured a comfortable seat for herself before slumping into it.
She thought she'll drift off to sleep immediately but found herself smiling as she reminisced on the advice grandma sang to her.
"Don't let anyone look down on you. And the boys, they'll come because flowers attract bees, but don't listen to them. They're all deceivers. Focus on your assignment there and never forget who you are".
She suddenly broke into a sob as it dawned on her they won't be seeing each other for a Long, long time.
The bus was full now and some people turned to look at her. So, she quickly wiped her eyes and turned to look outside the window, averting their gaze.
Grandma was all she had and now she'll be going into a new environment, where she knew no one. She forced back the tears that threatened to fall drop again. In a bid to take her mind off grandma, she remember the paper she found earlier and searched her handbag for it, she immediately regretted as she recalled the place she had his it.
The bus started moving and she quickly mouthed a prayer, committing the journey into God's hands. Then she took out her flask and began to eat her breakfast quietly.

Gracile, you have seomething many writers do not, including me- power of description. Keep it up. You are really doing well and I like your plot, its filled with misteries but I have some questions for you.
1. Where are the first part of this work set? I mean, the environment.
2. Nana and Rain seemed to eat and live well yet you mentioned she once worked for an European. What is the source of their livelihood?
I wait for your reply and more updates dear. Keep up the good work

Thanks ma'am.
First off, the location or setting is a village which happens to be well developed as a result of the presence of Europeans. They also established a school, quarters and some other facilities which further aided its development and civilization making it seem more urban than other villages.
I wanted indicating the name of the village in first chapter but changed my mind. However, subsequently I'll be elaborating upon that when I'll take you guys back to Nana and her former bosses story and eventually, Salome (Rain's mom) and her mystery 'lover'/Rain's dad. OK lemme stop there before I divulge too much info, lol.
Then about their source of livelihood, Nana happened to inherit her late bosses fortune and his pension allowances go to her. That's what the duo live on.
It'll all get clearer as we progress. Thanks for your time once again smiley

Chapter 5

Lagos was everything Rain expected and more. From the heavy traffic of automobiles and people, to the scruffy parks with crowds pushing through and scrambling to make way.it was a thrilling sight!
Back in Far in Ruwa village, there was was a vast expanse of land and livestock was plenty. The village was quiet the most part of the day and electricity was as abundant as water. The Europeans and few Indians who settled in the village facilitated the villages rapid civilization. The village boasted of rich minerals found in the popular falls, which double-served as a tourist centre.
Rain jerked as the bus pulled to a halt. She glanced her wristwatch, it was 8:40pm already. They must have spent close to two hours in the hold up because the last time she checked, it was past 6pm. She rubbed her eyes with the back of her palm as she alighted from the bus. She was immediately greeted by a mob of noisy people, in a scruffy park.
Someone snatched her travelling bag and dropped it on his head. Another boy came and tried to collect it from him. They began to struggle and exchange incoherent words. She was still contemplating what to do when a finely dressed young man came and said something and said something to them in a language she guessed was Yoruba. The duo stopped arguing and one left.
I opened my mouth to thank him but he quickly waved her off.

"Don't mention. That's how they behave here. You must be new in Lagos". He stated, sizing me up.

" Yes please and I'm in need of directions if you don't mind".

***************************************

"I'm really grateful for your assistance sir.you've made things a lot easier for me". Rain said.

" Again, don't mention. It's actually a pleasure helping a damsel like yourself " he confessed.

For the first time, she carefully studied his appearance. He was dressed in suits and held a leather suitcase. He looked like someone who should be in a hurry but here he was helping her. She tried to wave off her suspicions and was snapped out of her thoughts by his question.

"Sorry you said?".

" Yea I was asking if you have a place to stay yet". He repeated

"Sure I do". She lied.

" Okay, we're here. Welcome to University of Lagos ". He said smiling. I wish you all the best.

"I can't thank you enough Mr...?"

"Segun. Segun Olalekan".

" And you're? ".

" Rain". She added, smiling.

"Nice name. Okay here's my card. He said reaching his hands into his pocket bringing out a card. Call me if you have any problems okay?".

" Okay I will ". She took it from him and came down from the car.

She boarded a taxi to college of health and entered the hostel. She made inquiries and was directed to the notice board. She was elated to see her name went straight to locate the room she had been allocated and opened it.
The room was well-spaced and furnished with two wardrobes, a kitchen and a toilet. Water flowed from the taps and the sockets were all in place.
She noticed her roommate had settled in already, judging from the well made bed and personal belongings neatly arranged in one corner of the room. She hoped her roommate would be as nice as she was fastidious. The last thing she needed was a trouble-box to deal with coupled with the rigors of medicine.
She slumped onto the bed and closed her eyes immediately her back touched the sheets, as she paid obeisance to nature's call.

Chapter 6

Rain was up early as she was anxious about her first day in school. She anticipated a busy day ahead and therefore chose to ignore her aching body. She wanted to get the stress of registration and settling down over with, once and for all.
After taking her shower, she wore a casual outfit, slung a bag over her shoulder and stepped out. She came back in almost immediately, opened her unpacked bag and took out a leather bag containing documents before dashing out again.
Registration and screening went as stressful as she had predicted and by the time she returned to the hostel it was past seven. Too fatigued to visit the nearest canteen and too famished to cook, she stopped by the provision store on the ground floor of the hostel and bought two cold drinks and biscuits. She counted herself lucky that she had not fainted like some few other girls had while at the long queue.
She couldn't understand why some ladies went the extra mile to overdress for such an exercise even going as far as wearing high heeled shoes and thick foundation that started to drip like wet clay under the effect of the scorching sun. They looked like sad masquerades and now that the images replayed in her head, she couldn't hold back the laughter.
The door was not locked so she paused and took a deep breath before entering their room. A lady lay sprawled on the bed, half naked and fast asleep. There was spittle trickling down her lips and Rain squeezed her face in disgust. She brought out one of the cold drinks and biscuit and dropped them beside the sleeping lady while she settled down to hers. Then she had a cold bath and decided to take a nap.

*********************************

The following morning, Rain was stirred from her peaceful sleep by a strange feeling. She slowly opened her eyes and was shocked to see a lady looking straight into her eyes. She recognized her, it was the lady she saw sleeping the previous day, only her lips weren't as big anymore.

"Aren't you the cutest snorer I've see though? I'm Margaret, your creepy roommate. You can call me Meggy".

" I don't snore". Rain snapped.

"Holy crap! Darling, you should have heard yourself last night. I began thinking of gagging those pretty lips".

"you could use that for your drooling". Rain thought to herself

" Anyways thanks for the.. stuff last night, yea u knew when you came in. For next time sakes, I don't eat crackers. So what are you called dolly?".

"Rain.. Rain Kumar".

" You mean like rain, the one that falls? What sort of name is that? "

"Yea well.....

" Where are you from? Sorry ".

" I'm from Farin-ruwa in Nassarawa State but my dad is Indian ".

" Whoa, okay. So you're an half cast? That's cool ".

"Wait! Hope you don't eat garlic?"

"I certainly do".

" OMG, I'm done for!"

"Just joking" Rain cajoled

"Okay you got me".

And they both laughed.

" So have you guys had any lectures yet?". Rain inquired

"Yea we've had two but none of the lecturers gave note. They were mostly introduction".

" Okay so I haven't missed much then? ".

" Yea, a couple of lame threats from ugly, wanna-be-scary lecturers".

And they roared in laughter.
