Na wa oo. Application is a straight forward process and most schools have concluded fall 2017 cycle. Tell him to log onto your account so you can see the status for yourself. Do you even know the schools he applied?

Na wa for naija parents oo... most people dont seem to have their baby Immunizations cards. You would have to retake the ones mandatory for your school before you travel and take a record or you do it in the USA ( more expensive)

Below is a narration of my encounter with security operatives when I went for visa interview.

As I entered Keke Napep to Adeola Odeku around 6:00 am at obalende, I was accosted by a policeman and soldier in uniform. One of them said I should come down, I obliged and the following transpired
One of them said: What do you have in your folder (referring to the transparent folder I was holding containing by documents)
Me: Nothing except my documents.
Where do you work? I replied and He then asked for my work ID. I told him that I left it in the hotel. By now I remembered that someone narrated a similar experience while coming from the embassy after interview
One of them: Let us see the documents.
Me: Holding on to my folder I replied I do not have any bank statement.
They insisted on seeing the documents so I opened it while still repeating I do not have any bank statement and added that I am already running late.
One of them replied: We are not asking for bank statement. Why do you think we are looking for bank statement?
I flipped through the documents mentioning them: certificate, waec certificate, nysc certificate with obvious disdain in my face and voice.
Then one said: Let him go. I then entered the next Keke because the previous one had left.

They were reeking of alcohol and they looked so rumpled and disheveled. It was obvious that they profiled me and knew I was going to the embassy, although they didn’t mention the embassy during the course of our conversation and neither did I. The keke driver later told me that they are attached to a checkpoint around the roundabout, and instead of doing their job they would be harassing people. I just thought someone might gain from this, because the previous experience I read here adequately prepared me for the encounter.

You can request for a new i20 if you still have time which I doubt. However, that is not a problem, once the VO ask you how you intend to fund your studies, you can now chip in that you got a GTA and make sure you print the award letter stating how much the GTA will offset in your Tuition bill and stipend as proof. You are not the first and you wont be the last. You should be fine.

Please can ask what's a GTA

You can apply today and pick the next available date. But make sure you're well prepared before you go, so as not to waste 64k again. Anyways just be prepared and you can go any day/anytime.

NB: when applying to a small , expensive private Institution, and the VO asks why this school, please don't give the crap about One Prof and research gbogbonise. Give very sane responses that would justify the thousands of dollars you want to shell out for a degree. Possible responses could include.
1. The alumni Network - you could stress some simple stats such as " 90% of alumni at xyz are consultants in the big 4 and I am hoping to benefit from this rich network in accelerating my career"
2. specialisations - several small schools have specialisations which cannot really be found anywhere and you can give response such as " the consumer behaviour stochastic modelling study at xyz which is one of kind offers new possibilities which I most definitely want to exploit"
3. Financial Aid- If you get any form of aid from the school wether merit based or otherwise, that is enough reason to pick a school as money no dey grow untop tree.
4. location and other miscellaneous factors - A college in Wyoming would be best suited for a prospective geophysical or geological student... Iowa will be best for them Agricultural Folks, and Louisiana, if youre yammering on the shale boys for oil.

Thanks I would love you to expanciate more on .... What you mean by the big 4 on your number 1.....and explain your second point in your number two very helpful thanks

Visa Approved today at 6:30am Lagos Embassy

I am not really the "bleep type" or "xyz university" type so none of that today. So I have been preparing, planning and praying for this. On wednesday (12.07.17), I requested for a mock interview and @Calfavour and @blacnewton responded. I couldn't reach @blacnewton cos of network luckily for me @Calfavour called and we chatted for about 20 mins or so. I edited some of my responses with her even the study plan though cos what I had was longer than usual. I stayed at Semi Ramis on Hawley street, Obalende so that I can be among the first four people to be interviewed before the VO's start hearing generic stories about using google and usnews.com. I got to the embassy by 5:45am. The hustlers started disturbing “you need to make photocopy of your DS 160 page”, “you need a photocopy of your passport data page”, I just bone them dey go my own. When the disturbance was too much, I just replied with “ je ne comprend pas anglais, je parle bien le française, vous parle francaise?”. The two hustlers just left me like this one nah bad market. Guys you don’t need to make photocopy of anything. Don’t fall mugu for them. If it was possible, they can make you pay for the sand you walked on. You don’t even need to staple anything or arrange document. Nah waste of time. I did biometric and was on the waiting line. I was hoping to get the caucasian lady in window 3 or 4 because she was giving people time to express themselves. She issued the first guy visa and then from there gave blue paper to the other two. The handsome Caucasian guy in his mid-thirties in windows 8 denied the first two so I was praying seriously to avoid him too. The security just directed me to him. Cheii...Nah so I just weak. My heart was pounding at 1,000 bits per second. I could literally hear it too. I was hoping he does not hear it make e no vex am. My conversation with the VO in windows 8 goes thus:

VO: Good Morning
Me: Good Morning Sir, how are you doing?

VO: Great, pass me your Passport and I-20
Me: I Obliged

VO: So, what is your study plan?
VO starts typing fast on his system. He refused to look at my eyes cos my gaze was intensely on him. I just whispered in my mind..shee nah typing you wan dey type, I go talk sotay your hand go start to dey pain you grin grin
Me: My plan is to study for a Master of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I will be working on Enhanced Oil Recovery and Geological CO2 Sequestration with Professor Mohabbat Ahmadi. When I am done, I will come back to work as a Reservoir Engineer here in Nigeria.

VO: Tell me about the course?
Me: The course is a 30-semester credit course which requires completion of 24 credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hour of research thesis. It also involves the preparation and oral presentation of an SPE conference paper, and completion and oral defence of an M.Sc. Thesis. I will be taking courses like Advanced Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Optimization, Applied Reservoir Simulation, Flow Assurance in the Petroleum Industry, Advanced Production Engineering, Petroleum Geology, Advanced Reservoir Characterization. I will also be having a seminar (VO cuts in) ...

VO: How did you hear about this school?
Me: I first knew about University of Alaska Fairbanks through a publication on Reservoir Engineering in the Journal of Petroleum Technology. I also made use of advising services and resources from the EducationUSA Advising center at the Public Affairs Section of the US Consulate, the College Board, Petersons graduate guide and information from the website of Society of Petroleum Engineers to come up with a list of schools offering Masters in Petroleum Engineering (VO cuts in) …

VO: How many school did you apply to?
Me: Five schools

VO: Name them?
Me: New Mexico Institute of Technology, University of Houston, University of Oklahoma, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and University of Alaska Fairbanks

VO now looks at my I-20 and sees a problem. I just smiled like its nothing. Now he looks up at me with a broad smile. Probably in his mind, he has caught me now. All this confidence wey i dey show, e go end here now.
VO: It is stated here that your admission is for non-degree study in Petroleum Engineering. What is that about?
Me: Well, my admission was conditional since I am just rounding up a part time Masters at the University of Lagos. As soon as I send my transcript, the condition will be removed.
VO: What are you studying at UNILAG again?
Me: Process Engineering

VO just dey nod head like agama lizard.

VO: How will you finance your study?
Me: My elder brother is going to sponsor my education. Also, I have been working for some time now in the Oil and gas industry so in addition to my brother’s support, I have save up in my salary account and benefit plan.

VO: I hope you know Alaska is very cold so you will be needing a winter jacket.
Me: Ohhh, yes I am already making preparation for that.

VO: Alright, I will be approving your visa, take your I-20 you will need it at port of entry, pick up your passport in the next 3 business day…. I sabi the rest so I just bounce out comot. I been wan dab before, I just bone because people dey look me like say. No evidence was asked. I just pack documents go embassy for nothing.

Remark: Just be confident, pray and prepare well but know your application in and out. My believe is that they have already gone through your profile and they need you to give them a reason why you shouldn't get the visa. Prepare but don't cram. Even if you cram anything, say it like you own it. Forget the blue paper flying around and maintain your focus.

If it me then i would do it differently .. take option 1... there would be two options if she is an intelligent student

option 1
At ss2 by sept...i would ensure that she studies very hard and get very good grades for ss2 and ss3 . Then put her in Sat lessons now or self study so she has very high SAT scores and then aim to apply to schools that give full ride scholarship for international student... that way she dont have to worry if an aunty or uncle will fail or not. She would instead have full university scholarship from the begining

The reason i say that its in 2 years she be in university... with this other option she waits a whole 4 more years (grad 9 to 12).

I understand you stance perfectly... and we also know this... Lets see what happens with the interview first and if it goes the other way she continues her education and plan towards uni. will keep u posted.

Option 2
Alternatively if the scholarship would extend after one year then that doable as well to go now. Would take a longer time . Whether or not the scholarship is extendable you have to check directly with the source

Highly unlikely they would skip her class....its not academic she have to put up with. Big culture shock and change, different style of learning. Potential complex from having a different Accent at a young age , new envirnoment and many many things that she might be a lot more quiet and reserved compared to her mates until she adjust.... so unlikely she will stand out initially ..possible but u never know. People settle down differently

Very true @blending in... She would cope by Gods grace. Thank you so much... You are indeed Gods sent on this platform...

Good morning everyone. Am a newbie and I have a few questions. I intend to undertake an MSC program in Us next year. But my problem is that I have a baby that will be 2 years by next year October. I really don't know the success rate of mums travelling with a baby for school. Do they deny them visa based on the baby. My husband is sponsoring me but I can't leave my baby behind. Secondly, how can I secure a scholarship. Pls I need answers. Thanks

My interview was for 6:30am, i arrived at the embassy at 5:30am, i was interview by that slim beautiful lady they normally talk about here, she did my Bio-metric and also interview me. from the moment i step in the embassy i started smiling to everyone including her not knowing she will be the one to interview me but i actually didn"t want her to interview me because of what have heard so far about her, that she normally drain people with questions. I was the 3rd person she interview, the first guy she interviewed was denied and then the second person was one of those sister's from catholic church, she almost denied her but she was able to explain her self well and she was approved and then Meeeeee

My Transcript goes this way...

Me: Montana State University offered me Marketing Marketing Management..VO cuts in again is the same thing

Me: i became confuse and said one rubbish thing about marketing which i can't remember and later continue with that is not my choice of course But ETSU offered me Business Management which is what i wanted. i guess she was not satisfy with that but she just let that go (that was favour)

VO: typed for some seconds.. Did you take any exam like SAT, Tofel or IELTS

ME: No, i made an inquiry from the school about proficiency exam and it was waived because our official language in Nigeria is English

VO: she nods her head and started typing again

VO: when did you finish your secondary school

Me: Yes, i have 2 elder sisters

VO: Do they school here in Nigeria

Now the last question to approve my visa was where i saw how Grace and favour works, devil bin won try him power but God say No no no.. leave him alone

VO: who will be paying for your studies

Me: My Dad

VO: What does he do

Me: i went blank, i couldn't remember what my dad does, i was lost for words for like 35 seconds, she was just looking at me to say something, me i was just struggling to say but i couldn't, she noticed that and she said don"t worry take your time, settle down but yet i couldn't say a word, i was just smiling shaking my head, after some seconds she moved her head closer to the window glass and said relax, take your time we are just having a conversation with an elegant smile on her face while she was saying that.. before you know it i just pick up like motor wey dem dey push

Me: My Dad is into real estate business and he also import ties from Spain (although i starmara a little bit)

VO: I will be approving your visa, pick it up in 3 days time, she pick up the white paper and circle a place there, gave it to me with my i20 and said i should keep my i20 safe as will be required at the Port entry. Na so i collect my visa ooo No singles document was asked.

My transcript seems long here but it"s actually less than 4 mins with Vo because she speaks very fast and i also respond very fast as well.
