Their cackles rang in the air like a big church bell. Jane snapped from her thought, she looked at Sebastine who she had nicknamed Loud Talker. He was wearing a shirt with a hood and a grey ripped jean trouser. His crew were standing by his side, almost forming a circle. They were laughing at a tall cute boy who had apparently made a minor error in class.
The tall cute boy had handsome features but his dark skin was overwhelming.

“You seem interested in their clique.” Chukwudi said to her.

Jane turned to stare at him. They were in the same cafeteria, Terna and his girlfriend were also with them but they were caught up in their own engaging discussion. Jane had been thinking about Lancelot and was wondering whether he would really come. She did not know if she should be glad or sad if came; their whole friendship was now complicated, he was gradually becoming possessive rather than friendly and it was bothersome. At home he would ask her what she did while he was away from home instead of narrating to her the events at the hospital first, like he always did. And he now entered her room more than he used to before, looking all around the room as if he expected to see something unusual.

Rahila never noticed anything strange about her husband’s behaviour sadly. Jane wished she would just for one minute notice the weird things her husband did at times. Maybe it was safer she noticed nothing strange, so she would not blame her for being the culprit. But Jane knew she had to do something for Lancelot, he was her friend and she would try to help him out of his strange psychological situation. But what would she do? She was no psychologist or trained psychiatrist and she had never had to help anyone who had psychological imbalance before. She did not know how she was even going to approach him to find out what he was going through. She just knew she had to help him. Maybe if she tried to do something, they could both get to know the root of his challenge and find help for him.

“What are you thinking about Jane?” Chukwudi asked when he saw Jane did not speak to him and was still looked lost in thought. He surveyed her blue lacy gown that skimmed her shape and stopped knee length. She was preety when she came to the centre with little or no makeup and a simple hair style. Simplicity was her beauty secret, heavy makeup only made her look older and clumsy, or perhaps it was because he liked girls who were not so artificial.

“Nothing, Chuks.” She had wanted to tell him she was expecting Lancelot but decided against it. How will she explain it to him, my cousin-in-law who is obsessed with me wants to come to the centre to check up on me because he feels insecure about my being here, it will be the most odd thing to tell a boy.

“I know there is something bothering you, spill it out. I am a good listener, and there could be some advice I could give you that will help.”

Jane scanned his face; he was almost handsome when he appeared concerned. His eyes would look innocent and his forehead would furrow in creases. He had the look of a child though he was quite mature. “I will tell you if there’s anything wrong.” She lied.

Chukwudi mouth knitted in a brow, “So you are saying there is nothing wrong now?”

“Yep.” Jane said and gulped her coke to convince him.

“Hmmn,” Chukwudi looked unconvinced and did all he could to show it even as she joined Terna and Queen in their heated discussion. He will find out what was bothering her very soon, women were not good in hiding things. All he needed to do was pester her and she will soon spill the beans.

“Excuse me,” the secretary said to the four of them. “Which one of you is Jane Dung?”

Their eyes turned to her and scrutinized her curiously. She jerked in shock. This was it.
“I am ma.” She told the secretary and felt immediately embarrassed to be addressing the secretary who looked nothing older than 25.

The secretary nodded, “One Dr Lancelot is looking for you outside, he says he had to see you urgently, I think you should go right away.”

Urgently, Jane thought, what was so urgent? She assumed it was his way to make the visit look modest. She stood up to go, excusing herself from the group. She walked briskly past the shops and the other classes. She got to the front of the admin offices, there he stood in a black suit, his hands in his pockets and his face in a tight grimace. Why was he acting like a James Bond? She had to see him and dismiss him quickly before the group saw him. She went straight to him, he flashed his teeth at her when he saw her, the creases on his face dissipating.

“Happy to see me?” He asked in a macho voice.

“Oh lawd!” She exclaimed, not knowing what else to say or do. She managed to give him back a smile and collect his extended hand. He pressed her hands tightly.

Terna, Chukwudi and Queen appeared at the left hand side of the building. They stopped when they saw Jane and Lancelot. Jane caught their eyes and flushed with mortification. They came nearer to see clearly what was going on, obviously they wanted to be sure if she was doing something wrong.

“Hi guys.” Jane said self-consciously. “This is my brother-in... my elder brother who works in a hospital... as a doctor.” She felt like dying that very minute.

“Good afternoon Sir,” they all greeted still looking for evidence of something wrong.
