NAF HOLDS 10-KILOMETRE WALK/JOG COMPETITION FOR PERSONNEL IN ABUJA

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has held its 2017 Annual 10-Kilometre Walk/Jog Competition for officers, airmen and airwomen serving in Abuja. The annual competition, which took place in the early hours of today, is among the several sporting activities instituted by the NAF as part of deliberate efforts aimed at promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyle among personnel. Participants, which also included dependants, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and civilian staff, defied the early downpour to take part in the exciting competition.

The Guest of Honour and the Honourable Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung, who was represented by the Deputy Director of Institutional Sports, Dr (Mrs) Esther Aluko, congratulated the NAF for successfully organizing the competition. The Minister’s representative stated that the benefits of sporting activities to human existence included mental alertness, long life, sound mind and general wellbeing. She then called on the Armed Forces and other security agencies to consider including the civil populace while organising any sporting event. “This would go a long way in promoting good civil military relationship and also improving the standard of our sportsmen and women. Nigeria is a sports-loving nation, and this collaboration will keep our youths busy and reduce crime on our streets”, she said.

Earlier in his address, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, described physical fitness as a pivotal tool for human beings, especially members of the Armed Forces, to effectively discharge their statutory responsibilities. The CAS also used the opportunity to disclose that the NAF had made significant progress in various theatres of operations in the country and thus urged NAF personnel to redouble their efforts in ensuring the security of lives and properties of Nigerians at all times. Air Marshal Abubakar equally commented on the capacity building initiatives of his administration and the recent restructuring of the NAF to facilitate efficient and effective service delivery. He then promised that the NAF would continue to give utmost priority to the general welfare of its personnel and their families towards sustaining the high morale of the fighting troops. Highlights of the event included the presentation of prizes to winners in various categories of the competition. It would be recalled that a few months ago, the same competition was held in various NAF Commands and units across the country.

Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE deployed at Forward Operation Base Mainok, at the early hours of Sunday 5th August 2017 laid ambush for suspected Boko Haram terrorists along a track route leading to Alagarno forest.

They were ferrying logistics items to their colleagues. The ambush team neutralized 2 Boko Haram terrorists and recovered their weapons, 2 motorcycles, Jerry cans and grounded guinea corn.

Similarly, troops of 151 Battalion, 21 Brigade Nigerian Army, on routine clearing of bushes to aid unhindered movement of troops discovered multiple Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), connected together laid on the shoulder of the road at a suspected terrorist ambush site along road Banki Junction-Bama. I have a question though( probably a layman's question)....
Rather than just ambush them, why not track them to know their final destination first?

I wonder myself, they recently told us girls released to BokoHaram by parents admitted their parents sold them to BokoHaram, have they traced the parents? The parents would definitely know a thing or two about their hideouts. Even those that have been captured, of course some classified info can be gotten from them on some of the insurgents.

There is nothing expensive about equipping/gearing every NA soldier , its the mentality if for every infantry men especially that has to be changed.

They keep the good/clean uniform and gear and wear the ragtag gear one to fromtline duties.

I don't see why DICON cannot lobby better procurement of its vest and create simple chest webbings to wear on existing BP vests

CAS SPENDS TIME WITH FRONTLINE TROOPS, URGES THEM TO REDOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has continued his visit to Nigerian Air Force (NAF) operational units in the Northeast after taking a short break to participate in the just concluded NAF Annual 10-kilometer Walk/Jog Competition for NAF personnel in Abuja. Earlier in the day at Maiduguri, the Air Component Commander of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Air Commodore Tajudeen Yusuf, briefed the CAS on the more recent activities of the Air Component. In particular, the CAS sought to know if there were any emerging challenges and also requested for the projections of the Air Component in the continuing attempts at routing the remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT). Furthermore, the CAS directly interacted with the NAF combat pilots in Maiduguri during which operational and welfare matters dominated the discussion. Likewise, Air Marshal Abubakar held discussions with the airmen and airwomen, most of who are aircraft and aircraft-related technicians, and took the time to listen to feedbacks from them. Most personnel appreciated the efforts of the NAF leadership in creating a conducive environment to operate while a few highlighted some challenges bordering on operational and welfare matters. The CAS promptly provided solutions, which further raised the morale of the personnel.

Speaking during the discussion sessions, the CAS commended the efforts of the NAF personnel and conveyed the appreciation of the Service for their continuous selfless efforts, which had contributed to a remarkable improvement in the nation’s security. He recollected when Nigerians in the entire Northeast, parts of Northwest and even the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, could not sleep well because of the despicable activities of the BHTs. He added that substantial progress had been made in limiting the activities of the BHTs, who remain in disarray and had thus resorted to suicide bombing and kidnappings. He, however, acknowledged that there had been a few setbacks in recent times and that much more progress could still be made. Air Marshal Abubakar therefore told the personnel to redouble their efforts at ensuring the country was more secured, especially in the light of the enormous taxpayers’ resources being expended to acquire new platforms and reactivate grounded ones as well as provide for the welfare and training needs of personnel. While appreciating the difficulty in detecting a 13-year old girl with Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from a fighter aircraft, the CAS urged the personnel to use the newly deployed equipment on NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms to pass relevant information about suspicious movements to the land forces.

Air Marshal Abubakar, who was accompanied on the visit by some senior officers from the Headquarters of the NAF in Abuja, later undertook an on-the-spot assessment of facilities on the Base. The CAS continues the operational visit to the NAF frontline troops tomorrow.
