Page 1-106!! Thumbs up Frank for opening such a thread, hopefully I will be in your shoes within two years. I've told myself that I will never make any derogatory or negative remarks about Nigeria no matter the urge to gripe and complain, things are terrible and depressing yea, but it could have been worse. It has nothing to do with being patriotic, it's just a mindset. Am grateful for how bad things are already, knowing that am not defined by the environment or my circumstances, but how I react to them. Time and chance will happen someday and I will tell my own story too, but till then..... we will stay positive against all odds.

Some days back, I had the opportunity to tag along to the burial of my Mum's colleague's husband.

We met the service at when people were giving eulogies for the dead man. Haven not known the man even for a second, I was touched to the bone marrow by the good things said about this man. What brought almost everyone to tears was when his 8year old son came up to the podium to give his own hand-written eulogy. Though tears were running down his cheeks, he stood tall, with his head held high and gave his speech.
After the eulogy session, a wonderful saxophone rendition was made.

This was followed by a homily of sorts. One striking feature of the homily was the simplistic tone with which the preacher preached. The man, though somehow old, gave soul stirring solos (accompanied by the church pianist). He alternated beautifully between the preaching and music.

Another thing that struck me was the design of the church itself. Arguably one of the finest I've seen in a long while.

On our way home, I took some pictures.

PlayaOne is one of those people who came abroad and didn't plan his life. After years of being a "playa" while his mates were grinding and built a good middle class lifestyle with assets, he has finally opened his eyes on the opportunities he had and eventually wasted. Now ashamed and embarrassed he needs to make excuses for his successful or lack of it abroad. So now he's running around discouraging people from coming abroad, and blaming racism and everybody for his lack of success abroad. Notice he hasn't taken any responsibility as well? Is someone putting a gun to his head and making him stay in America ? I'm 31 and in Canada, all my mates who came here all own houses and drive nice cars within 6 years after arriving. My cousin who just came here 4 months ago as a skilled worker just landed a entry level job at a major bank taking home 2600 Canadian dollars per month after taxes. You do the conversion. That's a entry level position. And he has his own apartment and about to get a car, not to mention he has the luxury of living in a country that provides everyday amenities (running water, constant neppa, etc). How many 31 year old can accomplish this in naija in 4 months unless there papsi was one big politician stealing money ? The funny part is, my uncle (his dad) was originally against him migrating here. Now he thanked God he did. He use to be one of those naija patriots (like playa), even he can say youths in naija have a future with a straight face anymore.

Playaone is a fool. Original onye ara. Don't mind him. Come abroad and you will not regret it, I promise you! Your destiny is literally in your own hands here, no bullsh!t. You work hard you'll be successful period!
Which part of Canada are you bro??

Its you and your grand parents who exploited us for centuries ,and still you dont want us to come and share the sweating of our grandparents, the great american your seeing today is the fruits of our mother land Africa,we have all the rights to come And share the cake with you as long as colonial history hold the truth.
Nigeria is FULL of opportunity . what u mean is America is ready made so u don't have to build it up.

U want 2 work a regular 9-5 job own a big house, car, eat out... live in luxury.

and put no effort into the country . Yer country.

Nigeria is a frontier, a untapped mark where as America is flooded.
U could own all kinds of business in 9ja improve the economy, improve the living and become wealthy

But u who leave the country for "opportunities" actually don't

•••Its why business men from Russia dig oil in her land and u miss the wealth
http://energymixreport.com/russian-oil-and-gas-firms-looking-to-invest-in-nigeria/

••Its why her Choca is imported by the Hershey chocolate company and has made them fat an wealthy

Nigeria is full of natural resources and materials.
Opportunity 2 make something bigger than that wage labor all you go to America looking for
Because THAT'S what u and those who go there do.

Work a regular white collar job u could do inyher own country and live fairly decently in 9ja undecided
not opportunity. Or u'd stay home

Four seasons...The leaves start to get brown and fall off in Fall (or Autumn), and by Winter they have all fallen off because of the cold weather. They start to grow again in Spring and by Summer full bloom.

His post was in January so middle of winter.

I am not desperate, I know no one will disturb u as long as u stay away from crime and troubles that can land you in police wahala. But all tru then, one has to do all these little jobs to sustain. But those little jobs still makes more sense compared to Nigeria, plus the standard of living and the relative peace of mind.Perhaps with time, one will get a spouse. U only have mouth whe. U have that green card. Will make a solid decision next year, God help me!
Egbon, are u back to Nigeria ?

Moving on

My time with Mr. J (my client) has come to an end. A dramatic end, I must add.

For some weeks now, I had become increasingly aware of the fact that my present job(s) offer no growth whatsoever, same repetitive actions day in day out; that these jobs do not in any way tally with my goals in life. So I made moves to change that, I dusted my CNA certificate and applied for some CNA job openings. Only for me to be informed that the CNA academy I did my classes was not a "good" one. I'm currently scouting for "good" ones around.

======================================================

My Transcript has arrived at WES (the evaluation body) and they sent a letter to my previous institution to verify the transcript. I was jittery with excitement about going back to school. Only for me to hear that ASUU has gone on strike. I don't even want to talk about it, I don't want to get annoyed.

**Back to Mr. J

My Mum, uncles, aunties and relatives had always warned me to be wary of akatas, that 99% of them don't have sense. I was kinda hoping MR. J was among the 1% that has sense. Well, you be the judge.

I had informed him (Mr J) that my transcript had arrived and I may be going back to school anytime soon, I guess he didn't want to be left without a helper if I leave suddenly (as it had happened before) so he told me to inform my agency about the situation of things. Some weeks back, when I went to pick up my check, I spoke with them and explained everything to them, I was told to call back by the end of the week so they'd give me a concrete reply. I gave them a week, and called back on Monday (21st), I was told that there's someone in training to take my spot, that I should continue till friday and the new guy would start by next week.

On getting to work that Monday (21st), I updated Mr. J on the situation of things, informing him that he'd get a new helper by next week, basically, he'd have a seamless and hitch-free change of personnel. His countenance changed suddenly, throughout the rest of the day, he just seemed angry and was giving me bad vibes. I shrugged it off, hoping he'd get over it soon. I finished my shift that day and went home.

Like I said sometime ago, the drive from my home to Mr J's house is 45-50 mins depending on traffic.

So, the next day, I had started my "journey" to his house, I had driven for 40 minutes (or thereabouts) and ran into a traffic jam, so I texted him to give inform him I'd come in a little late. Only for me to get a reply, that I should not come to his house, that he doesn't need my services anymore. I called my agency and informed them of the situation of things, re-routed my gps and drove to McDonald's, got myself some stuff to eat, and drove home. No be my day you go ruin. undecided

When I got home and told my Mum what happened, she was like "Didn't I tell you?" undecided

Picture yourself like in a spaceship where there are lots of buttons and you don't know which one to press, well, that's where I am right now.

Garri or Gritz? grin

I took beans and Garri to work one day, I mixed the garri with milk and put it in a ziploc bag, then I put some sugar in another ziploc bag. When I wanted to eat, mr J's son saw my garri and said "Hey Obi, you're having some gritz?" I was puzzled, not until his dad came, brought out a pack of gritz and we started having an argument on which is which.

see if you can tell the difference?? grin

Which one is garri? Plate A or plate B
