Being a Data Analyst is a big deal in an academic and research environment. As already stated by others, you can fit into any organisation that appreciate research and development. However, learning SPSS is just 0.1% of what it takes to be an expert.
Organisations use variety of packages eg STATA, SAS,Epiinfo,R etc.
You need to show case some formal or professional qualifications such as in statistics or data related courses in order to get most top notch jobs or else you may just be a small fish in the field.
. I want to learn STATA in lagos, Can you Help?

Being a Data Analyst in order to make a living doesn't worth the ride but developing long time career path will enable you achieve your goal. By just making a living from this field will only limit your knowledge (restricted to making a living) but building a career path in this field will motivate you to put in your all. What I am saying is that: Data analyst as an educator isn't enough, you will need to expand to other fields like Management, Marketing, Finance, Economics and other related field of interest.

Will expanding to other fields ruin your primary objective?

The answer is NO.
Expanding your horizon does not mean you will be deviated from the primary objective which is being a Data Analyst. There are areas within the aforemention fields that require data presentation, analysis and interpretation. SPSS, Eviews, EXCEL, STATA, etc. combined with Report, Proposal, Thesis and Executive Summary writing will definitely 'buy' you a living.

This could be achieved one step at a time, that is, have your focus on a particular area as a starting, build and deeply absorb yourself in it. Then, associate with the right people (management, HODs, Lecturers, staffs, Researchers, Analysts, employees, students, etc.) who can lead you to where your customer base can be found. Ensure you carry out some PERSONAL problem-solving research ranging from academic institution to organization and society at large. As a result, you will be building your own 'library' (knowledge and experience in a specific field) and to show-case what you have done (as a means of conviction and proof).

With this little piece and others view and opinions, as an Analyst or Analyst-to-be, filter out reliable and accurate information from this thread and you are good to go.

Though this might not be the best but dont relent in search for knowledge.

Seriously, that's why I pointed to basics. Like knowing that 2 variables require t-test/chi-square. And above Anova and so on. I didn't say not knowing anything at all. Regards

Kk then. But parametric and non-parametric data should play some role. Knowing when to convert numerical to categorical to get maximum results also matters. Oh well, I am sure you mean well.

Thinking of going into learning R programming and Python as well.

most of our statistics are parametric in nature. Since they always seeks to differentiate between or among groups.

what is your location. I am good in research and grounded in the use of SPSS, Eviews, Gretl etc. for data analysis on PhD dissertation. I have scholarly articles available in google scholar.

Erm, that's not completely correct. Hence the need to check whether it is parametric and if not either use statistical tests for non-parametric data or log transform it

Chairman. You need to know more than SPSS.
Data Analyst does not only work in Research environment, they are needed in all environments and the job is the future.
Here in the US, you must know Python or R. Know Excel.

Also, you master one or two software like Power Bi , Tableau and you are guaranteed $75k plus a year.

I am interested in data science/analysis. Just conclude Bsc Mathematics/Economics and no job. I have been taking some free online courses at bigdatauniversity.com that i feel might help to get some basic knowledge of the field. I can be an intern or apprentice or whatever name it is called "trainee", under anybody or organization. I am open to advice or callup.

Acidosis:
You need to learn the rudiments of statistics and research methodology alongside. My knowledge of research methodology with basic accounting principles enable me to write business plans, conduct field surveys for business owners and research students.

Data analysis is very very broad, you can't know it all, there are hundreds of tools out there, I use Ms Excel, SPSS and one qualitative data analysis tool. I've been doing this for 4 years, and I'm not ready to quit anytime soon as no other job has offered me the earning and level of satisfaction I currently derive. Take time to build your network...some clients work with you for 2 years and even more. There's no limit to what you can achieve.
Bro, can I please have your WhatsApp number?

This is not true. You have to make sure the necessary assumptions (e.g distributional assumptions) are met before you decide which statistical tool to use.

@op While SPSS can fetch you good money, you can make much more if you learn R and SAS. SAS is not free but you can download the University Edition which is more than enough for learning and carrying out common analyses. If you studied statistics or a related course and want to be a good statistician and not just a data analyst, then I will advise you learn R, SAS, STATA and SPSS. Once you are good in these, others like MINITAB, EVIEWS, STATISTICA, MATLAB will be very easy to use. Your statistics, however, must be very solid. You will make a lot of money on fiverr if you know how to use R and SAS.

To think that i learnt all these myself.

As at then you'll see Older men and women begging me to teach them Statistics work, analyze for them... Truth is Data Analysis is cool and it will continue because the field is not saturated due to its rumour. Atimes you earn up to 20k in less than a day when you have a rich clients.. Truth is for you to enjoy to data analysis you have to know your onions.
