Does this now imply that one cannot join ISPON after having HSE 1, 2 & 3 from novelle centre?
what if i run an advanced HSE with them, will i be registered?
where is their branch in ondo state?
Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by Greatken007(m): 7:32am On Aug 08, 2017
Just go to their branch and inquire, their major concern is the Competence Development level 3,once you have the equivalent and the body you obtained it from is recognised by ISPON then you are good to go.The standard in ISPON is General HSE and Competence Development Level 3.With these you will be qualified to go through their membership process.I can't really tell if they now have branch in Ondo state(The closest to you is Oyo or Ogun ,)

You will have to kindly post questions, inquiries and clasirifations on a need by need basis. No one knows what you specifically want to know or learn. No one can give you all you need at once either. It has to be in "quantums" so to speak.

It will have to be a need by need basis.

Good luck.

For a rookie in the HSE, which position is the least you can apply for HSE supervisor or HSE officer?

In one of my recent discussion with a professional, I asked him "which aspect or area I HSE he would advice I concentrate on" and he replied "it depends, but first it advisable to secure a job in HSE before you can decide which aspect you want to focus on"

How true is this? If you have any contrary opinion please share. Thanks

Unless you have enough experience, you can hardly work in a supervisory role in HSE Management /Engineering. Usually, graduate Trainees start as officers and then move up to the supervisory roles. However, I have seen in many companies where they have employed young graduates as supervisors. Some manage to make mistakes and learn on the job. A lot other make a complete mess of the profession. Chances are you will start as an officer, as employment of supervisors come with minimum of 5-10 years experience. THIS IS NOT TO SAY YOU SHOULDNT APPLY FOR A SUPERVISORY ROLE IF YOU SEE ONE. Also, please find a consulting firm or someone to mentor you so you can get experience. You neednt work for Shell, Chevron or Mobil before you get experience.

Your friend is correct with regards to area of specialization. Listen, if you are working for a company as a HSE professional , only few well structured companies want to know your bias or area of specialization. Other companies you must know everything in the basics.
Specialization is good when:

1. You have landed a job and have experience.
2. You are a consultant
3. You are in academics

Otherwise , it is good to know everything in the basics. You will realize is use the word "basics". As the advanced area means specialization. In many companies and industries also, they use consultants to do a lot of jobs in fulfilment of company's HSE Policy and regulatory requirements. HSE staff of these companies do quality checks to ensure that jobs done by these consultants/contractors are good enough and will pass through regulatory scrutiny and reviews for approvals and permits.

So, in your case, please do general courses. Know them. Learn them well. Do ISPON, NEBOSH, etc. These will stimulate your interest. Specifically, levels 1,2 and 3. Then as you develop your skills you will find area ( look for areas) that you fancy and go dig further into this/these area(s). The moment you find area(s) that interest you, you need to develop your skills into a form of business or service as an enterprenuer (that is if you fancy that sort of business)./

Thanks for the detailed response.
Getting a mentor or internship is also as difficult as landing a job itself. With your detailed analytical and in depth knowledge of HSE world, I believe you are a professional with years of experience.

So I am officially making a request. Can you be my mentor?

I await your positive response. Thanks for taking your time to reply.

I cannot promise anything.
However, if you have a C.V., please do well to PM me so I can take a look at it. It allows me view a few things.
Thank you.

If you do not posess the following skills/or have the following interests, then HSE might just not be comfortable for you.

1. Analytical skills for technical and managerial issues
2. Report writing skills. Some reports are about 1 page to at times, 600 pages. Though most times, interdisciplinary
3. Reading comprehension skills. You will read and review a lot of reports. A sh.I.t load of them.
4. Proactivity. You must be able to sport precursors to problems and stop them before they occur.
5.etc. etc.

It will also be good if you are Lagos based.
Let me see your CV.
