You guys are yet to understand that good quality education is not cheap. As at last I check, medical students in Ghana pay as much as $2200 per year which is still very cheap when compared to other notable universities in Africa. And these university is still funded by the government.

If something like these is built in unilag or other federal unis and fees are increased so as to be able to maintain it, you will be the same people to start protesting. The sooner we come to terms with the fact that quality education is not cheap, the better for all of us.

We like things to be given to us on a platter but still complain that they are not enough. That's why we churn out half baked unemployable graduates every year and still complain of the fall in the standard of education.

If you think education is cheap, try ignorance.

Nigeria allocated over N6 billion Naira to buy cars for national assembly members. I don't know how many years and how much it took Ghana to complete the project but assuming Nigeria channels the above into projects as this, why won't we achieve it.

This is just one of the numerous misplaced priorities by the Nigerian government.

Those countries have a flamboyant economy and can afford it.

Can Nigeria afford free education?!? Be honest to yourself

Lol. Bro, go and calculate the sum of the security votes of all the governors annually. Then you tell me why we can't run a free standard education if we want to.

Noted!

Your points are valid!!

The system in Nigeria needs a total overhaul. I don't know how difficult it is to replicate a working system. These things are very easy,

we can do it but we are used to doing things the wrong way.

Corruption have eaten deep into the fabrics of our existence. Am just tired. We keep on talking and talking with nothing to show for it.

Our mumu never do?!?
simple not easy
How many of you can deny your family members favours not to talk of party members who put you there.

Which one Big Giant of Africa, Nigeria get?

University of cultist college.

Everybody can see y Nnamdi Kanu gets support for his Biafra agitation.

We need to leave this backward people and country fast.

We have failed leadership across the divides and at each sector of governance.

PDP is intrinsically corrupt but so also is APC, but then in General we as a people are corrupt. You can't plant cassava and expect to get pineapples.

My state has had a generation of continuous corrupt governors. If we had a Republic of Delta the same thieves will still rape and loot the Republic dry.

States within the south East are not corruption free. We know the Ubah's, Diezani, Oduah, etc to mention a few. Do you really believe that if there was a landlocked Republic of Biafra that CORRUPTION will die. It will only rebirthed with new players.

Indeed it will much worse.

So consider the entire quest for succession what actually will it achieve for the common man

This is a defeatist mentality, not everyone is collecting 18k but then how many members of the population can shell out almost $3k annually for just fees alone?

And no, no one is saying everyone should become doctors but if you want quality education; it costs a lot of money

you have the defeatist attitude. I mentioned solutions, you're pipe dreaming. Must the whole population become doctors. The ones we have how many remain in the country, how many can Nigeria's economy pay properly? You cannot separate one sector from Nigeria's morass. Fix the economy and every will fall into place.I'm Yankee medical school costs 30 to 40 k a year yet ppl make it happen (college fund which we can replicate on the farm or stock exchange, school loans which we can get from money lenders or family, village contribution as I mentioned, scholarships even though few and far between Mr even doctors sponsoring doctors too meet demand) .

Ghana did not disintegrate to reach here

Ghana did not restructure to reach here

Ghana operates no state police

Ghana operates no resource control

Ghana is also multi ethnic/religious.

What Ghana did was to pursue good leadership and eliminate corrupt officials and tendencies regardless of ethnicity.....

Nnamdi Kanu is an ethnic jingoist.

Ghana is a small country, around a quarter and a sixth the size of Nigeria in landmass and population respectively; much easier to administer.

Its ethnic groups are more closely related. They embraced a common language and unanimously agreed to change the country name, a residue of colonialism, from Gold Coast to Ghana. Something Nigerians can/ will never do. Even the Bible says two can't work together unless they agree.

Its religion ratio is 3:1 which allows for relative peace, as opposed to Nigeria's 1:1, a recipe for disaster.

Ghana has no need to disintegrate or restructure but if the need arose, I'm sure grievances would be addressed in a civilised manner.

Nice analysis but what do you think is the problem with Nigeria going by the fact that it is not the only ethnically, religiously diverse country in the world?

Don't you think it is more of leadership than tribalism considering the fact that the leaders are always united in their looting while the masses are the ones singing the ethnic division songs..

Smh! If you had gone through the content of my post, you would have seen where I reiterated that everyone can not be doctors, I laid emphasis on quality education.

My original post that set this whole back and forth in motion says 18k minimum wage means people won't be able to afford such fees, isn't that an indication that we need to do things differently in order to ensure people can afford to pay for their wards tuition.

I apologize if I wasn't exhaustive with the content of my original post, I'm only a disciple of the best words are left unsaid

Diversity can be a good and bad thing. In Nigeria's case it's the latter.
There will be no progress if the status quo is maintained. I think disintegration (my personal preference is a North/ South split to begin with) and/ or devolution, would be a step in the right direction.
Until then we will continue to go round in circles, supporting criminals because we're just happy to have our ethnic group or a related group represented in government.
Devolution would foster (healthy) competition among the regions.
Where there's no "foreigner" to shift blame to, Nigerians would be forced to hold their tribesmen to account.

Huh to be sincere I am jealous.... Lalasticlala I think we all need to see this.

We need to realise Nigeria can't fund all its universities to World Class. We need to pick 6(one from each region) flagship universities like the ivy leagues or C9 of China and fund it excessively like Ghana funds the university of Ghana, so that those universities can in turn help to solve some of our top most national problems.
Those universities would be
1) Mandated to reduce their various enrollment sizes to NUC recommended capacities.

2) Encouraged to put more emphasis on postgraduate/research education.

3) Allowed to determine its fees in line with an agreed aggregate with FG(Not expensive but not outrageously low)

4) Encouraged to do away with Catchment policies and Elds consideration for undergraduate enrollment and staff recruitment.

5) Encouraged to remain comprehensive universities but with a degree of speciality in certain disciplines e.g UI for Medicine/Surgery, ABU for Military research, UNN for renewable energy.

6) Mandated to do away with ASUU

7) Encouraged to tap into industry partnership for more income.

cool Encouraged to create an important metric that assess researchers relevance in Scopus and Thompson Reuters web of science and base staff promotion on it.

9) Excessively funded by govt. Recommendation would be to allocate additional funds of 25 billion per university.

10) Mandated to publish annual independent financial audit report by either PwC or KPMG which would be posted on the University website as done by many world class university.

11) Encouraged to have a strong and updated internet presence to boost visibility of the universities. UI and UNN websites looks like junk.

12) Encourage collaboration with research universities in developing nations and developed countries(dealing with issues pertaining to developing nations). This would also increase the chances of getting millions of dollars in grant from foreign organisations.

13) Individual FG ministeries should recommend research work to the university of choice as they deem fit. E.g Rice production in Nigeria with genetic modification(to carry b-carotene for vit A production) aimed at eradicating commonplace blindness in Northern Nigeria. In the event the project is too costly for govt or the university, the university having requisite facility, infrastructure, processes and international collaborations would be able to attract billions of dollars from generous foreign organisations. Case study; Oxford currently has a 5 bill USD grant from Gates foundation to develop C4 rice.

13) Govt set up an apolitical technical committee and assess the performance of these universities across their core mandate, research relevance, international outlook and rankings(especially Times and ARWU)

So that would be 150 billion more for our flagship universities. Considering the fact that the Nigerian senate takes just about that amount as its annual budget then that shouldn't be too hard for Nigeria to afford.
This kind of insight is rare on nairaland. Very good ideas, it can only be implemented by a committed and intelligent government though.

I equally support the disintegration of the country along cardinal axes, because there is no single iota of unity between the North and the South, East in particular.

But how can that be achieved? Who will initiate the process? Do we have to fight a war as the ruling class would always do everything possible to maintain the status quo.
