Please, i could use some career advice from great nairalanders. Please tag monikers that you think would be of great help, as i am at a crucial point in my career.

I am a graduate of chemcal engineering but for 2years now, have not gotten any engineering related job. The only job i got was at KPMG (audit), which i resigned after 3 months due to some personal reasons. I am currently an Area Sales Rep with a poultry feed production company that pays 183k per month (net take home after tax and other necessary deductions), though i could use up to 20 to 25k to fuel my car monthly.
Now, i just got a PTDF scholarship offer to study Advanced process integration and design in UK but not really sure if it is worth ditching my current job for it.

I am not very confident about securing a job once i finish msc because only a handful of opportunities come for chemical engineers. more also,UK rarely retains Nigerians.

Please what are your advices, especially from those who have done Msc in Uk.

I need your advices, i dont want to make a costly mistake.

Friend advice is always good when it's from people with experience of the subject matter where advice is sought.
I studied (law degree,MBA) and live in the U.K.
With my prestigious degrees I eventually didn't work in my field of study (This is very common).
I only live in the U.K because of i have a Nigerian and British passport. (If I didn't they would have chased me away).
The U.K is not what it used to be. The Tory led government has made things difficult for foreign students.
Previously you could work and study at the same time as a foreign student. That has been stopped.
Previously after your studies you could work for a few years. That has been stopped.
Previously U.K degrees were world renowned. Now with a U.K degree applying for a Nigerian job you will find hundreds of other applicants just like you who studied abroad (U.K,U.S etc)but are looking for jobs.
Do not leave the security of your current job for the cold and foreboding location that is the U.K.
You can study via "distance learning" or do an online degree with a U.K , U.S university. You'll have the best of both worlds without taking on the risk and debts that follow.
There was a time when leaving good jobs in Nigeria for study in the U.K made sense. That time is long gone my friend. A word is enough for the wise.

Hi, come to the UK. You have opportunities to work 20 hours in a week. That can give you about £1000 or more monthly. You can work full time during holidays. You got nothing to lose as you would have made more money than your job in Nigeria.
Secondly, you will have your certificate.
You can go from here to Australia for scholarship. Australia is in need of Engineers right now.

You should not have problems surviving on PTDF scholarship if you are paid on time. Have you considered taking up your scholarship in Germany or Australia since PTDF is now flexible?
I am a PTDF scholar and got a job after my MSc.

As a sales person I strongly believe you are networking and meeting new people which may be helpful for you in your future.See certificate in this age is not a determinant of how you will be successful either financially or career wise its all about connection and .
My advice is to concentrate on your work and be saving money to start a similar business.Your travelling to abroad for Masters programme will only be good for you if you are still jobless here. My brother why do you want to leave certainty for uncertainty.Forgot abroad masters as some of my friends that traveled for masters programme thinking they will have edge over us in Nigeria, are back home begging for any job.

My brother don't be bamboozled with foreign qualification, what you have upstairs will take you anywhere irrespective of where you acquire the knowledge.

That is my two kobo for you

Prec1ous:
You applied for the scholarship with the sole aim of winning and getting the grant to study abroad, so why are you now confused?

The situation of the country is dire but you alone know yourself and as an engineer working as a sales representative, then there is space for everyone but not everywhere.

It is better you go since your tuition is covered it you have to start thinking ahead from hence because if you come back to this country with nothing, you may be DOOMED!

Use the opportunity abroad to expand and grow, come back with a new orientation and create jobs or leave there after your study to another country.

I wish you success and shall be well with you.

PS: It is not a prayer, it is what I know, GO WELL!

from my own point of view, i sincerely think you should go ahead with the scholarship offer. Master Degree is a step up in career, though it looks like you are well comfortable now with your current job offer, but i tell you, taking the scholarship is an investment that has a larger return on assets (ROA HERE IS YOUR ABILITY) than your current job offer.
Brother do not hesitate to take the scholarship, it will go a long way in your life.

My advice:

1. Ask the Poultry farm to give you leave of absence without pay, truth is you may or may not return to them.
2. Go for your MSc. Try work hard to make a distinction.
3. You wont get a job in the UK, its not a curse, its just how things are , no more work permits etc, but there is hope.
4. While in the UK, apply for Canadian Permanent Residency, its easy.
5. You will get the Canadian PR. Once you complete your MSc fly to Canada.
6. Start a new life in Canada.

0R
From 3 above
4. Get a UK citizen pregnant for you, if a man or get pregnant for UK citizen if a woman
5. Get such to marry you asap
6. Start a life in the UK

OR
4. Return to Nigeria
5. Continue to work with your former employers
6. Start looking for better paying job.
To give you an idea of better paying job, some guys earned 183,000 in 2005. Better paying job can give you at least 5 times that if you are graced.

Whatever you do SHA, please pray pray and pray. In Fact join MFM and Winners in your city.

Ditching your job may cost you later in terms of career progression besides you're not guaranteed a job when you get back to Nigeria

Go for the MSc. U cud consider the option of relocating to CANADA after your masters. That means you have to start the immigration process now. If you accept the 183k job, it will get to a point you will realize you need the masters to advance and move to the next level on the Maslows Hierarchy of needs

Good luck

studying in the UK is very nice no doubt, but please I'll want you to think very well and deep about this decision, because first and foremost UK is very expensive, what are your chances of survival during and after your progam. And besides wouldn't it be very terrible for you to come back after your masters and join the job search trend. schooling in the UK is not as easy as it seems and at the end of the day you're not guaranteed a good job there.the UK government doesn't care about foreigners studying there, all theyre after is your money. please fam think well and smart before you consider quiting your job.if it's a country like Canada I know you're safe.after your programme you can easily get a good job and start your life over there unlike the UK.so just weigh your options and I think the only person that can really advice you well is God,talk to him if you're a believer. But if not trust your guts and have a backup plan(contingency)in case things go south.
sorry for the epistle

@dopeboi142 i agree with u, if it was canada wlda been much better, i see alot of uk graduate back in the country roaming around looking for a job and even settling for jobs as low as 50k. so whats the point? canada or even australia wlda been better.

For me, I'll stick to the job here...
I'm also a Chemical Engr of not less than 6 years and the closest I've worked in this field is in a Water company as supervisor. My present job too isn't related to ChE. Truth is the jobs for us are limited! We're 7 in my dept clique back then, not even one of us works in line with what we studied and these are guys with good 2.1s

I'm on a new line in my MSc now and I'm not regretting it. I have a friend who's in the field you are right now with extremely crazy schedule but still manages to shuttle between classes and work (just as I do).

IMO, go on with your job, next year when you're more relaxed, pick a form here in Nigeria - if you still want to continue with ChE or not is your choice.
A bird at hand is always better than millions in the forest, except you'll be staying back in the UK to work after MSc and not to join the queue here - the depression that comes with not being able to secure a good job like your present one after MSc is better imagined than felt.

Bro congrats on your scholarship. I just need you to understand that having an M.Sc guarantees no job in Nigeria, I know a lot of people who acquired M.Sc especially in the U.K and went back to Nigeria to continue searching for job. Before you make any decision, Kindly consider these things, firstly, with ptdf scholarship, you have to go back to Nigeria immediately after your program so your chance of getting a job in UK is alittle above 5%, secondly, if you do not have enough money to take care of yourself aside the sponsorship then your dream of living an average student life in UK would be dashed, thirdly, you have a job of 183k which is a decent pay in Nigeria considering the work pay of employees in Nigeria and that can take care of yourself and people close to you. I would have advised you to grab the scholarship with both hands if you were jobless but if I were in your shoes, I would apply for a study leave in my workplace that's if I can't deal with missing an opportunity to go to U.K, if not I will engage in serious savings and apply for M.Sc elsewhere where I have a better chance of getting a job. Good luck in whatever decision you make

Studing abroad is a good opportunity and depending on what the scholarship covers - tution, accomodation, upkeep? The goodthing about studing here is that if you graduate as one of the best from the Msc program there are opportunity that you can get a funded PhD or job even outside the UK and after which you can decide if you will stay abroad or go back to Nigeria. Pray about it and God will guide you aright goodluck

I'm not a "career" kind of person, but I think you should consider what you're passionate about -- (M.Sc.) oversea. I'm also not experienced or old enough to advise you but trust me 183k is not really much (no amount of money is ever enough anyway).

Even after you must have obtained your M.Sc, and hopefully get an increased pay at work or on a new job, your new salary would still not be enough.
It is not a curse or something, but a reality that has played out in the lives of many out there.

So, money should not be a driving force in the pursuit of fulfilment cos no amount of it will ever be ENOUGH.

Whether UK or Nigeria, don't let money be the driving force. I'd rather you move to the UK because your passion tilts towards a postgraduate study/process engineering. This will help curb any feeling of frustration, just in the event that you come back without any meaningful or immediate job offer.

OP do you really want to hear the truth? All those big names - UK Masters, Advance Process Integration do not mean much in this country. The highest it can fetch you is improving of so-called chances of employment - we are not practicing engineering in Nigeria let alone Advanced Processes. If you miss getting another employment you may not be able to set-up anything in the country related to the knowledge you have acquired. So, my imperfect advice is: continue the work you are doing and always be sure of your future rather than wishing like teenagers. Age is not on our side to experiment uncertainties.

it depends on what the op really wants. As for me the reason why i'm studying for my masters currently is because i intend to acquire my PhD and go into lecturing. If he has no interest in entering academic field, then there is no need for it. But if he is keen on lecturing especially back home, then by all means go for it. So it depends on what you want.

Bros....stick to ur 183k job o. I am in the HR world...alot of pple who go abroad for MSc come back home starting from the scratch...most of them cant even pass a single interview (due respect to those who could). They go for the M.Sc and come back home job hunting. My advice, stay in Nigeria, enjoy ur 183k while it increases, grow ur experience level and build a career path...u will definitely have to do ur M.Sc anywhr u like with ur coy paying for it (i.e if u grow ur career path ). Coys dont pay for certificate again....they pay for the experience...the skills.

And if your plan is to go for the M.SC and never come back, meaning u have the guarantee of securing a job over there after ur program.....then pack ur kaya and go.

Since you said the msc is fully paid for, go for it.
While you are in UK for studies, try to get visa to other countries like USA, South Africa etc.

When you are done, don't come back to Nigeria.
I repeat, try and use your head. You should apply for jobs in south Africa and other countries, especially lecturing jobs.

Or , save up enough money and go for PhD in Canada or USA schools. Once you enter Canada or USA, your problem is solved.

Discuss with a trusted superior in your office, with a view towards taking an unpaid study leave. I believe that what you are going for would be beneficial to your employers. Sound out the trusted fellow to know the company policies about such before making it public knowledge.
That way, its a win-win situation, because, the employers can benefit from your improved expertise and you still have a job to come back to. They might wish to put you on a bond, though. If so, then make it as short as possible, don't be desperate.

It all depends on your plans in life, your age and responsibilities at hand. A friend had the same option and today he is married and even traveled to UK with his wife where they all stay and his MSc/PhD still going on. Having an opportunity to do your Msc abroad is really great and if you have age on your side, its a good shot. From my assessment of your abilities, your can always get a good job, resigning from a prestigious KPMG and getting another good paying job and winning a scholarship from PTDF shows that you can always make a head way, any decision you make, will always yield you a great future. I would gladly pick the Msc if i were you (Based on Accounting) because the future of Nigeria is not certain so you need a solid ground. Had it being you are planning to travel with your money, i would say no, invest it in business because the essence of all these hustle na to make dough. Wish you best of luck as I don't know why I am convinced that you will always make the right decision just as you have been doing in the past. don't fail to tell us how far you later went with your decision and the after math of it all years to come. Best wishes.
