The Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Board began the demolition of illegal structures along the only highway that leads into the state capital.

According to the officials, the structures are not befitting of a state capital but the owners have been venting their anger and pleading for more time to move their wares. They also said the traders and other occupants of the structures had been given an order to vacate the area since January, but they did not obey it.

Chairman of the Sanitation Authority, Robert Enogha, “In January this year, we started marking (the structures). Then from April, we started giving abatement notices. Conscious of the fact that things are hard, (and) relocation is also very hard, we gave that grace and I think the grace is overwhelming us. This is September already we have entered the ‘ember months. Conscious of the fact that things are hard, (and) relocation is also very hard, we gave that grace and I think the grace is overwhelming us. This is September already we have entered the ‘ember months’ he said,

According to the demolition team, the structures are defacing the Bayelsa State capital and can as well be a hideout for criminals.

Oil rich state with a very low population, yet more than 80% of its indigenes are wallowing in abject poverty. Salaries and pensions are still yet to be paid for by the state government. Nigeria is cursed.

They should also demolish the mud house between Okutukutu and Opolo junction... Maybe the govt should help resettle the occupants... that house is an eye sore, a structure not befitting of a 21st Century state capital.

It was on channels TV news yesterday night at 10p.m news. So this ought to have hit front page before the news reportage on channels TV

How is it news worthy?

From what you just said, anything on Channels is suppose to be on NL FP?

Not really but for it to be aired on that platform shows that the op wasn't fast enough to deliver this report on time. Report of this nature needs to hit front page to draw the attention of the government and the general public. I watched how some persons complained they were taken unaware during the interview even though they were informed since January this year as alleged by government's representative. Op should have being detailed to get a balanced news reportage as was done by channels TV
