Greetings Lads, (and) Lasses who hang with the Lads here.

Y'all remember the ever-so popular Club-lexus? Well this is another Lexus-praising thread and primarily to say 'I RESENT 4-CYLINDERS'

I've been there and back in the past with the Opel and their ecotec engines and complex electronics, the Mazda 2.5L V6, the Lexus ES 3L V6 VVT-i and the Camry(s) which I still own (for now)... Albeit only a handful but i've come to a convicted conclusion- naturally-aspired or not, 4-cylinders are CRAP, humongous CRAP. They rank within the lower strata of internally-combusted automobiles.

Here's why I think very little of them (now) in a somewhat short description. Ride quality is sacrificed (for the most part), Vibrations are ever-so present, noise sipping out into the cabin as you drive along and it's nowhere over with it's flaws. I can't live with these, not anymore. Need I mention Power and Torque? Yes, in the next line.

I remember when I was made to drive into and through a flood within Festac extension (before the roads were tarred). I don't know how to calculate distance but my Lexus V6 was submerged in water for well over 30mins. I couldn't go any faster either, who struts the gas pedal when inside water, not to mention the invisible portholes and mini-ditches by virtue of the damaged roads and heavy rains. I could see water leveled atop my windshield (no exaggeration).. With all the torment to the car that day, car drove flawlessly for another 3 years before it was sold. Try that with the Toyota Camry 2.4L (which I currently own) or a Honda Accord of the same engine displacement.

Yeeaahh I know the 4-cyl/6-cyl analogy/debate is popular knowledge and I'm aware of the 'different strokes for different folks' notion but Damn! Nigerians are afraid of a lot! I recently met a well-dressed-seemingly-smart-man at a gas station and I found him not to be smart in the end when he mentioned his fears of a V6 engine. Afraid of a V6 engine? His reasons were ludicrously alarming and I prefer not to talk about it. It's this sort of people that would say 'my vehicle's 120km/h is faster than your vehicle's 140km/h'.. Haha.

Now for the Lexus? I can tell, yes I can. Having befriended other car brands, I've been laid flat on my face and whipped with the rough end of a pineapple, I underwent perpetual misery with the Mazda and the Opel, or maybe I knew very little then.. Reliability, safety, luxury, ride quality, and even ergonomics IMO, et all. Hmmm. Lexus wins.

Earlier this year, I sat in the cabin of a 2014 GX460 and it was a 'wowser' even though I didn't even drive it. I don't know of an MB of it's class that has better luxury and attention to detail.

Caveat- We know a 4-cyl can be made to be as powerful as a 6-cyl or even an 8-cyl but I don't fancy the general feel of the Turbo either. That's not the point here anyway.

So now I'm swerving to a naturally-aspired 3.3L V6. The Lexus ES 330. Thank goodness it comes with a base V6 as Standard.

I can't afford to run multiple cars now so imma have to let go of my older Camry (I just over-hauled it's engine so I no kuku send the hediot car again)

Brewed thoughts are welcome.

I think it's wrong for you to say all 4 Cylinder engines are crap. Different automakers have various technologies behind their builds. I'm not a fan of 4 Cylinder power units either but I have to give it to Toyota's 2.7L found on the Hilux/Hiace/Fortuner/Prado. That's a really good one. Honda's 1.8 iVTEC on the Civic (2008) is brilliant and a tough one too. Not all 4 Cylinder engines are crap please.

PS. The interior of the 2014 GX460 is rather distasteful for a car from 2014.

Well, to each his own.

Different vehicle demands different engine.

BMW, an industry leading builder of extreme performance vehicles, have gone back to 4 cylinder engines, mostly.

I've played with a lot of cars. From 35 horsepower Austin Mini to 300 horsepower Mitsubishi Evolution.

My current sled is a MINI Cooper S with turbocharged 4 cylinders, there has never been a day that I've wished for a V6 engine in it.

So, to each his own.

When buying things, environment plays a major part. It's useless coming from the ikorodu to lekki everyday driving a heavy engine in a car, you get hooked in traffic and all that power wasted without use.

V6,V8,V12 are good enough for highway driving especially the saloon cars, so if majority of use would be freeway throttling no problem if not, buy a picanto aside, ride the picanto to work and every weekend floor the gas with the breeze jeering your face in a G35x or M35x grin

I've used naturally aspirtated 4 cylinders all my life until last year when I decided to go with v6 and oh boy there's not turning back. The power and torque when accelerating, the quiet cabin and just ease of driving is very satisfying. I know there are some turbo charged 4 cylinders that make more horsepower but talking about naturally aspirated engine here. Will I still buy 4 cyinder? Yes but as a second car while I keep my V6 for those long distance journeys.

The 2.7L in the fortuner and hiace is just a lousy fool.
I like toyota. But the 2.7L has average power and Nigerians only buy it because they want to eat their cake and have it(Fuel economy). Most of them think all 4cylinders have good mpg. Smh. grin
The 2.7 is reliable but not very powerful.
I will never buy the 4cylinder variant of the Prado. It's too lousy for my liking.
The 2.7 4cylinder was available in middle east countries where Prado, hilux and Co were really cherished .
They put it in the 2010 4runner but people complained and it was replaced with the standard v6.in the following years.

The 2.7 4banger was placed in the new tacomer but only available on the lower trims and they’re almost all extended-cab only, which no dealers are going to want to sell. I just don’t get why they bothered putting it in that truck.
The 2.7L is only 2mpg better than its v6 variant which doesn't even make any sense. angry

Best Engine platforms ever.
VQ.
Honda J series . Almighty v6
3mz and 2gr are pretty okay.
1Jz, 2jz . Toyota. Original V6 smiley cool
The Benz V6 are not bad too.

I care about my environment and I know the harmful things fumes and other poisonous gas does too our environment.
Most automobile brands are replacing their v6 for Turbo Charged 4bangers.
E.g Ford, Honda , Mercedes and few others.
It's a good option because it's safer for the environment and provides better mpg.

But most turbo engines will not cross 300k miles without carrying out a major repair.
For does who don't know. Turbo charging is Forced Induction . Squeezing out as much power from a small engine as possible.

Imagine a small 4cylinder pouring 380Horse power. It sounds fun until it blows. And when you see the quoted bill for repairs you'd scream out loud.

Are Nigerians ready for turbo as daily drivers ? NO.

Take a look at clean turbo passats that enters Nigeria. And they end up with a Golf 3 engine withing two years.

Honda Accord has no v6 variant anymore.
They phased out my favorite J35 engine( Almighty Formula )
And replaced it for a 2.0T. Terrible angry angry

Have to agree with you that the 2.7L is lousy but it works! And while I'll never have it if I could afford the Prado, it's great on the Hilux & Hiace. Feels like bulletproof. The exhaust notes are terrible on the Prado TX-L tho.

About turbocharging, I'm indifferent for now as it's gradually taking over the world. I've had an experience with the 2.0 TSI on the Passat (2009). Very little lag but reliable (This wasn't in Nigeria). It did 157K KMs with no major repairs. It's sad Honda replaced the J35. I'm still happy Toyota has it's 4.0L V6 on the 4runner so whenever I can afford it, I will.

When driving cars like the Tundra with the 5.7L iForce V8, the environment is the least of my concerns cheesy cheesy. Drove a 2009 model back in 2013 from Lagos to Enugu and the music from the exhaust is still fresh in my head

It rocks my senses when I find Venza's with 4-cylinders, as enormous as they are? What supports the bulk? I had it to myself for a week or so and it had the worst drive-feeling ever.

I don't care about the size of the engine, 2.7, 3.0, 3.5.. You don't fit a Prado with a 4-cyl. This is where Toyota gets it wrong.. And this is all for economy sakes. Lexus has a better resolution, this is why even the Rx300 has a V6, as compact as it is.

Did you forget that 2.7L 4-cyl in a Prado(and Co) is supported with an auxiliary gear that improves it's off-road ability? It still doesn't extinguish it's miserly 4-cylindered nature.

It's people like you that would put a higher price tag in favour of a 4-cyl.

And about the GX460? It wasn't a GX460 you sat in.. Must be your dad's 1991 Volkswagen Vanagon.
