Please we need to remember at all times that VOs are not Naija people. They'll most likely refer to what they say on the CIC website if they're looking at your file and find any issues. They assume you have read the site and is familiar with what is required of you. No where does it say on the POF page that you can use receipt for paid accommodation or car or any property in Canada to present as POF.

Let's not twist or try to mould the information on there to another thing. Keep it simple. Moreover, paying for an apartment you haven't seen is A MASSIVE RISK on your part, which is more than the hotel fees you are trying to save. You also have the option of Airbnb. They're cheaper than hotels and help you settle and know the area before going to commit to an apartment.

Thanks for your input madam. I already have my visa and I'm arriving Canada before the end of the month. The person getting the apartment is reliable. I just don't want to bother him that's why i'm keen to avoid staying too long at his place. I'll check the air bnb option though. Still hope to hear other opinions

Oh lol grin

And you wrote POF like person wey still dey apply. I think you can go ahead if your guy is reliable and accountable. I believe Vcole did this too with her family prior to arriving Calgary. Search for her post on this thread.

I thought you were asking if you could touch your POF before your application is approved. You are fine to touch away jare....some folks wey borrow money complete POF, return the money after approval, talk more of you wey the money na your own. grin

Lolz... just had to ask abeg. I heard that at the point of entry you will have to show evidence of the funds u said u have in pof. One of my friends said he wa asked to count the money in front of the immigration guys at the point of entry into canada. That's y I'm asking if I can use the receipt to explain the shortfall

Hello boss,

Perhaps you should just wait till you get to Canada to avoid stories. At least your mind will be calm too. Just like what @canadianfly said, it would be risky paying for what you have not seen. Your friend's eye and tastes may not necessarily be your taste.
She also suggested airbnb, go with that instead, then when you are certain you can commit.

My opinion though.

So let me start with the Not so good news....

*1* , (for Medical profession) job experience in Nigeria, no matter how many years (Housejob, NYSC,MO,Reg, S-Reg, Consultancy) is not acknowledged by the Canadian system.

*No matter where you were trained, as far as your job experience is only in Nigeria, it doesn't count*

The only countries job experience are acknowledged by Canada are
*1. USA
2. UK
3. AUSTRALIA
4. IRELAND
5. SOUTH AFRICA
*
There were 5 ways to get into the Canadian system

*1st Pathwaykiss
If you have 4yrs of work experience in ANY SPECIALTY in any of the 5 countries (USA, UK, Australia,Ireland or South Africa), you will be absorbed directly into the Canadian medical system....you'd just only take an EVALUATION EXAM....

*Prognosis* :- very favorable, evidenced by the fact that that's the route even Canadian citizens are taking knowing that direct entry into their system is very difficult.....

*2nd Pathway:*
If you have 2yrs Internship in FAMILY MEDICINE in any of the aforementioned countries, you'd be absorbed directly too, as a Family Physician after taking an Evaluation Exam.....

Then the main advice is that Rural areas have a high demand for Family Physicians, and the pay is more, the stress is Less....

*Prognosis* :- highly favorable and highly recommended....as evidenced by confirmation from another doctor.

There is freedom and flexibility in the rural practice...

The doctors are fresh...

*KIV* :-
They both adviced doctors to get Married before rural practice because you will know /see everyone as patients....
And here, once someone has become your patient, there are some papers and hyperformalities (doctor-patient clauses) you have to sort out before marrying the person....

They both adviced that it actually takes a while (i.e. through the above routes to be established, but that when you start earning, you will know it is WORTH THE journey/ SACRIFICE.

Then, if FAMILY MEDICINE is not your major end point, after being a registered doctor, you can then apply into any other specialty that you now desire...

Eg...if I like to specialize in O&G....thenn I go to Ireland to do 2yrs Internship in FAMILY MEDICINE, then enter Canada, get registered, and I now want to go into the O&G, I can now get Specialization opportunity and start O&G.

*NB: the main point is, the salary is not child's play when you get registered here....*

*3rd Pathway* : -

*Academic Route--*
That is to come in for Masters degree, get permanent residence and start doing their exams (EVALUATION and QUALIFYING EXAMS part1&2)...then get into the system...

*Prognosis* :- very poor.....
Evidenced by the fact that 80% of those that took that route end up as research assistants and teachers in College and universities...(even though the pay is good, but can't be compared with Clinical practice)....

They say many of our Regs and Consultants are trapped there as well....

And then just continue to PhD level.

*4th Pathway* :- (almost like the 3rd)
To come in for Masters (Funded by the School) , get up to PhD level, work a bit and then apply directly into Specialization (still after the examination) then enter the system...

The issue is that on the journey to PhD, you'd be engaged with teaching sciences, and you will be comfortable and may not have the time to start seating for the Licensing exams....

*Prognosis:* again, they said the majority of foreigners who take that route end up becoming Professors (since they're already high up the academic ladder) and keep teaching, never getting into the clinicals...
The pay for Profs is quite higher than ordinary lecturers, and writing thesis will not allow you prepare for "children's exam....

The only catch for the PhD holders is a stable job and theyre easily accepted when they apply for specialization.

Please Sir, what do you mean by this : *NB: the main point is, the salary is not child's play when you get registered here....* please is it that the salary is very small ?

Hello everyone...had been following this thread for a while now. Very informative.
Pls would like to ask - whats the prospect of someone with an IT support experience (3yrs) but having professional certification yet. Also .is it better to do a professional course (microsoft ,ccna etc) there after migration or here before leaving if one is successful.

My work exp in Nigeria was not in HR. However, I studied HR in Canada. Not sure you can get an HR job without you having prior experience or education in the field. You might need to do a PGD course and write some certification courses as mentioned in my other posts.
Again, I'm not sure. This is solely my opinion. There might be exceptional cases for exceptional skill sets.

You could get administrative jobs through Career edge also.
Just be open minded to start from somewhere. Gaining the Canadian experience is key in fully integrating else...

Thank you so much.

Bro, do as many certs as you can now. And above all learn the technology, don't just gather certs like a veteran soldier but actually be able to prove your skills...Better to land armed and ready to hit the ground running than adding learning for exams to the survival hustle. The cert is just to get your foot in the door and hopefully not to be bypassed by some mean ATS somewhere so you can show your reall value and pull out your medals like a 5-star general. wink

Hi Fam, for those that landed in Ontario, how do you handle the 3 months wait for OINP health insurance ? Reason I ask is that I am coming with a toddler and an infant who are allergic esp to cold. Just wondering how much private insurance would cost for the period.

Naa you can be fashionable joor.
Just layer with sense.
For inner
A thermal
Wool jumper. (Please when getting clothes always check the labels for material compositions. Wool keeps warm.)
Jacket (wool content in the jacket material should be over 50%.
Wool scarf. Pls rub your hands on the wool material to make sure its smooth as some can scratch

For bottoms. Get thermal longjohns or 120 denier leggin that can trap in your body heat.
Thermal socks
Shoes that have some warmth inside them and not too flat.

You can indeed dress fashionable in winter if you are ready to spend some money. I have only worn an ugly winter boot once. for guys, there are timberland boots and Nike Lunar Force 1. My everyday footwear in winter is the Lf1 by nike.
Jackets..you have canadian goose, Under armour, North face, columbia and some other fancy ones out there.

Hi Blackbuddy,

Trust you're doing very fine.

Wanna quickly give you a hint about my profile & I'd appreciate your recommendations on my eligibility for Canada express entry.

- B sc. Materials Engineering, second class upper 83% You need to get this evaluated to ascertain if it equivalent to a Canadian degree http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assessment.asp#designated and to know how much points you can get for education http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/express-entry/grid-crs.asp
- Presently a Masters student (Metallurgy), at the University of Johannesburg (Scholarship) - To be wrapped up in 2018 This degree will give a big boost to your profile when completed and you have the certificate. You might want to hold on to take advantage of the extra points it will give you
- 1.5years work experience as an Associate Piping Engineer with good touch of Project Management as well in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Currently, you will get points for one year of working experience if you can obtain a reference letter from your employer for it. read here, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who.asp
- Moderate Leadership skills with some awards as well
- Good knowledge of Primavera P6 Project schedule software
- IELTS (Academic) 7.0 IELTS academic test is not acceptable/can not substitute for IELTS general test. You will need to take the right test and ensure you score 8, 7, 7, 7 for listening and the other sections of the test respectively to get the maximum English proficiency points
- Age: 25 Good age, as a single applicant it will get you the maximum 110 points
- Project management professional (PMP) certification in view

Your prompt response would be highly appreciated.

Regards,

Niyi.

Hi, I actually came over on the old FSW program of 2014 and not Express Entry but the tips above can give you an idea where you stand. Also study the information provided at this thread, https://www.nairaland.com/2624318/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled
All the best.

Hi, no one is allergic to cold so I guess you mean susceptible smiley but your point is well noted. I also have a child who is prone to colds though at 4 years when we came, we knew that keeping him warmly dressed is the key. He has experienced two winters now and he is the strongest of us in that he can't wait to go and play outside in the dead of winter no matter how cold. After dressing him appropriately, I just sit down inside and watch him from the window. My skin 'forbids' the cold unless absolutely necessary for me to go outside. We only came with 1 dose of malaria medicine each for the whole family, 1 set of worm expellers as well as paracetamol to enable us cope with the change of environment and to combat the initial stress due to the relocation/travelling. I came in June and fortunately, we didn't need the drugs ever which I later threw out. It's not advisable for everybody to do without insurance like me especially when you know your own personal situation. For you, I would say talk to your current insurance provider for a suitable insurance cover then also talk to and compare with IGI, Mansard to name a few as I know they have such products. Based on your research, you can make an informed choice. All the best.
