the two courses including other science courses are important but naija system have rendered them utterly useless.
infact there is unofficially gang up to frustrate science grad in naija labour market.

Let me digress a bit, i think the primary thing now is the age you finish at, plus the grade you finish with..... i have two friends that work with access bank and they are biochemistry graduates. They were picked cuz they had 2.1 nd they finished b4 clocking 24. Let no one deceive you to wasting another year at home. Even military self don add age limit. Forget criticism and go for a course you can finish strong with, at a moderate age.

Must you work with your first degree? Studying Anatomy, Physiology or Biochemistry is only a means to an end.

In the US, they are a prerequisite for the study of medicine or Dentistry. There isn't a physician who didn't get drilled in the basic Med sciences.

They are talking about Nigeria

I strongly suggest you write another UME instead of wasting your time with those 2 courses. It is even worse if you are a guy studying Biochemistry or microbiology with the hope of using those degrees to make ends meet.

Medical laboratory science killed those 2 courses a long time ago. All their associations executives of those 2 courses were busy chasing albino rats somewhere in laboratory while laboratory scientist were busy creating departments (units) such as medical microbiology and clinical Biochemistry/chemical pathology which renders the Bsc microbiology and Biochemistry like someone suggested as useless as 'P' in the psychology.

My advice, if you can't exercise some patience till next year ; go for Bsc mathematics (science dept) or Bsc English (art dept). Make sure it's pure mathematics or English. All those cut-and-join courses like industrial mathematics, economics and mathematics, statistics and mathematics, computer and mathematics, and lately mathematics and brewery. Same applies to English. AVOID THEM!! You will be like a bat after graduation : you don't belong to birds nor mammals.

I am a practicing medical laboratory scientist.

Go and study a more practical course, dear.
I read biochemistry but am a Digital Business Consultant now. I wish I followed my passion from day one.
Having said that, some of my mates did Msc and Phd and are lecturing others did MBA and are into businesses. Some are in the banks working.
Overall, follow your passion.
Blessings!

Forget job opportunity and go for want you are talented for. Going to university today with a mindset of gaining white cola job is a wild dream, and the earlier it sinks the better.

Let me advise you candidly. If you're studying a course, do not do it with the aim of getting a salaried job. Do it for knowledge. I'm a graduate of Physiology which is in the same Faculty as Biochemistry. I'm offering my services on Fiverr as a Medical Researcher & Health/fitness & Nutrition writer. I don't regret it. The knowledge has helped and I plan going back for an MSc once the strike is called off. Use your head oga.

The hot cake of today might not be the hot cake of tomorrow. Think of the one u are better at and go for it. Don't pursue the one that has opportunity presently.

In 9ja, its about who you know n not d course u study. However my direct answer to ur question is microbiology due to its wide range significance, go to alot of fmgc u will always find a micro laboratory, likewise many other sectors too.
Hope am not been biased as am a microbiologist

[quote author=Mizjemie25 post=60358984]chances of you landing a job is slim.. I would advise you go for either medical lab science or pharmacy.. I studied biochemistry.. and I'm yet to work with it.. you can do Msc to increase your chances in the brewery industry if that's where you aiming for.. just my opinion though [/quote who told u dt

Well, the comments are kinda of hilarious but largely true. No specific bearing for grads of those disciplines. However, I'll advise you study any (preferably Microbiology it's easier than Biochemistry) ONLY if you are sure of making a final CGPA of at least 4.0/5.0. If you are not certain, please don't study any.

Furthermore, you can desire to study any if you have ambitions or plans of furthering your studies overseas. You still need to make a very good grade and battle with the GRE when the time comes.

I will agree with the poster who said science courses are not fully utilised in the country. Had I known, I'd have studied a social science course. MCB works in a place where constant research and development is conducted, which unfortunately we don't practise in Nigeria.

Let's I forget, be very good at Chemistry and basic mathematics, have a predilection for cramming (you'll need it), learn to write legible and spell correctly. Also remember, you can become anything (whether mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Science etc) as long as you make a GOOD GRADE. Just have it in mind, the probability of practicing what you studied is low.

P.S. Get into school early especially if it's a public school. Do not waste any second at home. The earlier you are in, the earlier you are out.

Caveat: Make a GOOD GRADE.
