I strongly suggest you write another UME instead of wasting your time with those 2 courses. It is even worse if you are a guy studying Biochemistry or microbiology with the hope of using those degrees to make ends meet.

Medical laboratory science killed those 2 courses a long time ago. All their associations executives of those 2 courses were busy chasing albino rats somewhere in laboratory while laboratory scientist were busy creating departments (units) such as medical microbiology and clinical Biochemistry/chemical pathology which renders the Bsc microbiology and Biochemistry like someone suggested as useless as 'P' in the psychology.

My advice, if you can't exercise some patience till next year ; go for Bsc mathematics (science dept) or Bsc English (art dept). Make sure it's pure mathematics or English. All those cut-and-join courses like industrial mathematics, economics and mathematics, statistics and mathematics, computer and mathematics, and lately mathematics and brewery. Same applies to English. AVOID THEM!! You will be like a bat after graduation : you don't belong to birds nor mammals.

I am a practicing medical laboratory scientist.

Honestly, you guys have spoken my mind, you guys just told the OP the bitter truth.

I have been a graduate of microbiology for the past 5years, you can't believe that I have never used it to work in my field before.

Not that I have not been seeing jobs, but the experience they request for, is like walking from Nigeria to Chicago.

Sometimes, I always think otherwise, I have been to the last stage of an interview before in an FMCG coy, but was turned down on two occasion that I don't havr experience in my field.

Even, I was turned down to work as a lab scientist in ministry of health, just because they said, a microbiologist without medical licence can't work in the field.

Infact, these days I don't even go near most of all these my field again.

I prefer applying in other field, where what they needed is what you can bring in not really your certificate sometimes.

OP, to be honest with you, please go for medical lab science, or you go for better lucrative course, leave biochemistry and microbiology out of the page.

Majority of my friends we finished together and some that also finished as biochemist are now working in bank, some access, some uba and some first bank.

You spoke all my mind. I wish I had studied pharmacy or medicine or gone off completly from the sciences to the management courses or even law

Please go for Computer Science...study a course that will link u to IT industry. Leave Bioch n Micro whatever alone. Inaddition, u can go for medical science courses or business courses. These are courses relevant in Nigeria.

Services offered, description, your image etc matters. More importantly, ensure you have the fiverr app on your phone. It allows you stay online at ease and most buyers will prefer buying from someone who is always online.

Now this is someone that studied biochemistry , the most important part is get a good grade, find out which part exactly you want to go into.

BCH is vast , very vast and you can fit into a lot of places, the only factor is time and chance which is applicable to any course you studied.

Environmental part of biochemistry is looking like the next big thing.

Research in Nigeria, I think its dead.

The only reason I don't like MLS is because you can only work in a lab there are jobs available though but even the very good ones are not easy to get.I also think food science is a bit limiting to study as a course, what if you don't have opportunities in the food industry. People should go for flexible courses abeg.

MLS isn't only only restricted to lab.

Honestly, I had the dream of studying medicine, you know our Nigerian schools, and also meeting cut off mark for the course.

Some science courses are not meant to be study in this country, because we don't have market for them in Nigeria.

I had a friend who we finished together, he's now in US, studying nursing, saying I regret doing the course is an understatement.

Have a nice day

Well op, that most peeps didn't make a way with biochemistry/microbiology doesn't mean others don't. My sister studied BCH in Unizik, she got a job with Nestlé sagamu barely a month she finished her NYSC. Besides, getting admission to study MLS/pharmacy/medicine isn't close to being easy bro, only if you intend attending a private or state university tho.

My friend, please confine your advice to what you know. Stop trying to impress people with an emptiness. No graduate in the Basic Medical Sciences, Natural and Physical Sciences starts a Lecturing job as Assistant Lecturer, except with M.Sc. It does not matter what you studied in the areas mentioned. The rule is that a fresh graduate without cognate experience starts his/her lecturing career as a Graduate Assistant; and with M.Sc without teaching/research experience, the entry level is Assistant Lecturer. You don't get straight into Lecturer II except you have a Ph.D, but you can get there and even up to Lecturer I by promotion from Assistant Lecturer (Residency) without a Ph.D. However, it is not possible to become a Senior Lecturer without a Ph.D, no matter the experience/residency.

nelszx:

After graduation you don't just work, you go do your internship (though getting in is like war) but the money she makes there can set her up in life (independent) before she goes for service. B.MLS is a path to different places as you are covered and not restricted to hospital and lab if you want to venture.

You can go into equipments / instrumentation / reagents supply, you can work at the Presidency, Governors or NASS clinics (if you get mouth), SON, NAFDAC, NDLEA, Primary / secondary / tertiary health institutions, Medical research institutions and if she decides she wants to lecture she goes straight as an Assistant lecturer cos of her years of study while others will be struggling to get graduate assistants.

The truth is many are called but only a few graduates as there's constant screening at any and every level but it's worth every bit of it (in the long run). And please don't choose for her let her make the decision herself be it Medicine, Pharmacy, MLS, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Nursing etc just support her.

Op, you have been rightly advised by the previous posters. Study those courses only if your name is Job the sufferer. I have a 2-1 in biochemistry and i can inform you that the certificate is useless to me right now. When i was in school i was told i could work 'anywhere', only for me to realize that anywhere actually meant nowhere. When i finished service, i entered the labour market and it was then that the reality dawned on me.
After like a year and some months in the street i had to go back to school to study pharmacy, and now i am not only getting better education, but i am happier.

Whoa! Op this thread reeks of persimism and I can only imagine the depth of your current confusion. I'd feel same too if I were you...

I studied Biochemistry at the Bsc level and then focused on the environmental aspect of Bch at the MSc level.

I'd say you pause from all of these advice and ask yourself "what's my plan?"
The reason being that something must have made you consider those two courses while applying for Jamb. So think about it...
What is that picture you had painted in your mind? The picture you feel that a path in biochemistry/MCB would help you fulfill?

When you identify the final destination you are headed, it becomes easier to chose a path. And in trying to identify this final destination, listen to your passion without of cos ignoring the reality. Lose or win, acceptance of the reality can make you succeed at a rather difficult cause or completely deter you from it.

Now this is what I know as the reality:

* Indeed, getting a job in Nigeria either as Bch/Mcb graduate is not easy, but hey where is it really easy?

* Truly the reality above is worsened by the fact that there's really no BCH/MCB specialized field here in Nigeria. Which of cos means that if you plan to settle abroad, u have no worries cos the courses are hotcake over there.

* Indeed the presence of MLS has worsened reality number 1 especially since many graduates of BCH/MCB hope to work in the lab. The MLS guys have used their association brouhaha to ensure its only their MLS people that near labs, in fact they won't even allow you do IT in a lab sef.

* However, with all the gloom, there is light. If you want to practice Quality Control, I'd say fire down with any of both. Although I have to tell you that getting a QC job isn't easy as almost all the BCH/MCB peeps want this job and employers value experience (which you can get during your IT or through an internship after graduation). Some others do medical sales rep job for pharmaceutical firms before eventually settling into QC. And once they get it, they ain't in a hurry to move. The good news is that the Quality Control/Assurance department has come to stay in the manufacturing industry. So while it may be difficult to secure, the role is ever present. You can work in just as good as anywhere there's manufacturing: pharmaceutical firm, breweries, Fmcgs, Bakeries, Restaurants, Paint firms, in fact anywhere they are producing something. If you start on time to grow your depth in QC, know all the Jurans of the field, you would so love it.

* On the other hand, you may want to venture into HSE/Environmental studies. This is another ripe pasture. The world is going green and slow as it may be, Nigeria is not left behind. In this case I'd say you choose BCH and then do Environmental as MSc. It's a very interesting field. But, if you have no plans for MSc, you could decide to study Environmental straight during BSc. Although its a wider exposure for you to do BCH Bsc and then Environmental MSc.

* However, if your plan was to venture into medicals e.g hospitals or laboratories, this is the time to reconsider. There is no space for BCH/MCB there. The space is clogged up already as almost every graduate of Basic medical sciences believes their 'calling' is in a lab or hospital. No think am, MLS ti take over

* If your plan was to venture into the food part of Biochemistry, why not go fully into food science straight up? Cos I believe you would get more food related knowledge and exposure there. That's because in BCH everyone learns same thing until final year where you get to choose which aspect you like and even then, I feel like it's the basics of the food science they touch. However, if you have MSc plans then go ahead to do BCH first and then food as your MSc that provides wider exposure for you.

* If you also want to do academics, fire down. Only that this path isn't for the faint-hearted. You would need to do BSc and MSc in the same course for most schools. Note that if academics is not your path, do not make the mistake of doing BSc Biochemistry & MSc Biochemistry collabo (same for MCB)... That is a sure path towards frustration.

* Another reality is that, if you indeed choose any of both courses, make sure to excel at your grades and come tops. Anything short of a 2.1 greatly reduces your success chances and increases chances of frustration. People are going to tell you the courses are difficult - BCH for the insane diagrams of pathways and MCB for the jaw-breaking names of microbes. But hey, which course is easy really?

I wish you success. smiley

bros MLS are coming for you guys, trust me they will soon take over all these career you listed!
go and check, even NGOs that used to accept MCB and Biochemists in the past, hardly employ them these days without license.

these guys Med lab scientists are now in other industries including the ones you mentioned.
they declared war against the two profession OP mentioned.
the right question is what are microbiology and biochemistry veterans, association executives, and professionals in government doing about the situation?

it is just like saying a tiler or bricklayer should have no business in the construction industry because he does not have license to practice.
the above is the perfect description.
there was this associate degree that was scrapped allegedly out of greediness.

if one consider the great deal of biochemical pathways and microbes studied, these courses are definitely not useless, it is naija system that is making them look useless.

Mr OP this particular post is equivalent to wailing,
best advice to Op dont study these courses, go and study Med lab science, since microbiology and biochemistry association have decided not to do anything about the situation, because very soon microbiologists and biochemists will be needing MLS licence to work as a medical sales rep, quality control, or to even work in government parastatals, the way things are going, walahi.

Doesnt matter... God's favor is paramount! even if you read adult education, you can get a decent job. A first class Chemical engineer can end up teaching in primary school in Nigeria today... Just make sure you watch video tutorials and gain some other valuable skills while at school. Entrepreneurship is the way!

Thanks for your input but be updated bro there's a recent circular to this (though was granted last year). I'm telling you for free as it is now that a degree of medical laboratory science starts as assistant lecturer and not graduate assistants but you must commence Msc to be promoted. If you doubt me please contact NUC for further clarification as the order came from them.

Here's an excerpt from an article which I will post its source so you can do well and read up:

"Since part I will now be a special Masters degree, the Universities would start Part I as Assistant Lecturers. However, since no one leaves with Part I results to work anywhere it would only be theoretical. Remember that the Medical Laboratory science first degree graduates have just been been granted to start teaching in Universities as Assistant Lecturers because their course is now 5 years. So, Part I would be equivalent to first degree programme of Medical Laboratory Science."

Pls, don't suffer your self or waste your time with those courses cos you will be frustrated having studied hard in sch just as the medical students and be left hanging in the labor market. I tell you its really frustrating., study a course that is more or less like a vocation, something you can do with your hands, something real. Like the medical courses, acct, architect, fine art, agriculture etc I pray they will listen and yield to this advice. Its not abt having a university degree any longer, its about what you can do with your degree. My own two cents, thanks

What do you guys have to say about Anatomy and physiology? Is there any place they can boldly apply to work professionally?
Where does a microbiologist really work? Water board? But go to NAFDAC, bulk of their staff their are biochemist and pharmacist. The problem is just job scarcity. The ratio of Job opportunities to number of biochemistry graduate is low. Biochemist can also work at industries.
But personally I believe at this age and time, one should focus more on entrepreneurship rather than job seeking. Demand for job is more than supply in the whole country. It is even worse for those who study physic, chemistry, maths, biology, zoology, political science, sociology e.t.c.
Even pharmacy we see as lucrative, haven't you seen jobless pharmacist? How many Job opportunities are opened for a pharmacist? How many drug producing companies do you know? And how many drug dispensing centers have you seen vacancy in front of their gate? You see 'Job security' is an illusion. it doesn't exist. Create a Job from what you studying. In Biochemistry, you can make lot of money from parasitology research, Nutrition research and studying alloxan with respect to diabetes. These are not jobs. They are opportunities!!
you don't know what you are saying, most pharmacy students are even working from Final year b4 graduation. It is the most readily employed healthcare profession even before nursing or medicine. Am neither a pharmacist nor pharmacy student. Most community pharmacies don't even have full-time pharmacist but auxiliary nurses as pharmacists prefer going into the pharmaceutical industries..
