This is one area where the foreign coaches are head and shoulders above our indigenous coaches. Unlike their Nigerian counterparts, they know how to do their homework and make good preparations. A month before our must win AFCON qualifications against Egypt last year, Sunday Oliseh was still in Belgium (or where) while ranting that the NFF has not sent him the tapes of Egypt's matches. And I can tell the same story about many other naija coaches.

Moral of the story: compared to an average foreign coach, an average Naija coach is super lazy.

Rohr Plots Super Eagles’ Game Plan With Zambia Videos

By David Meshioye:

Gernot Rohr has commenced close study of two Zambia’s Match footages ahead of Nigeria’s crunch 2018 World Cup qualifier against Chipolopolo’s in Uyo on October 7, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles’ Media Officer Toyin Ibitoye told Completesortsnigeria.com that the former Burkina Faso coach is leaving no stone unturned to ensure Zambia are flattened like Cameroon at Goodwill Akpabio Stadium.

Towards this end, Rohr has began a closer study of Zambia-Algeria double-header videos, admitting that the two matches confirmed Chipolopolo’s resurgence in Group B.

” I can confidently tell you that Super Eagles coach is seriously busy with the two Zambia’s games footages,” Ibitoye told Completesportsnigeria.com.

” Rohr has been studying the tapes with his backroom staff, with the aim of coming up with the right tactics for the game.

” All hands must be on deck, Zambia will not be taken lightly.”

Nigeria lead Group B with 10 points but would need an outright win over Zambia to guarantee her third straight World Cup qualification after matchday 5.

On the other hands, Zambia need to dig deep for a win in Uyo to take final group matches to the wire.

Nigeria's Ogenyi Onazi 'positive' despite failed transfer
By Oluwashina Okeleji
BBC Sport, Lagos

Ogenyi Onazi has been a key part of Nigeria's 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign

Nigeria midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has put his failed transfer to Birmingham City behind him by making an impact for both club and country.

The 24-year-old, who plays for Turkish club Trabzonspor, was denied a work permit to play for the English Championship side last month

On Sunday he came on in the 88th minute for his club and scored the last goal in their 3-1 win over Genclerbirligi.

"Every disappointment is a blessing. I'm not disappointed," he told the BBC.

"I'm still strong, working hard, because I know there are better chances ahead."

"Somehow you can call it disappointment because there was an opportunity for me to go to England to start another life, another football entirely, but nevertheless there is never a dull moment."

His first goal of the season came after he played in all but three minutes of Nigeria's two 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon, which the Super Eagles won 4-0 and drew 1-1.

Indeed the Super Eagles vice-captain has played in all four their 2018 World Cup qualifiers as they lead Group B in Africa.
Onazi started his professional career in Italy with giants Lazio before switching to Turkey in August 2016 by signing a four-year deal with Trabzonspor.
Despite his failure to earn a move to England, Onazi is confident he will move away from Trabzonspor soon and has not ruled out playing in the English Premier League.
"I believe in the next transfer window it's going to happen. Now we know what we need to do to make everything happen." he added.
"Of course that [England] is one of the places I want to play before thinking about retiring.
"I can only keep working hard to help my team now; I know and believe by the special grace of God it's going to happen soon."
He played for Nigeria at the 2009 Under-17 World Cup on home soil and has scored once since making his senior debut against Liberia in October 2012.
Onazi, who has 43 international caps, helped Nigeria win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, and played in all four of his country's games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Recall that the Gha-Naija game has been rescheduled for Monday

Nigeria coach Salisu Yusuf talks tough ahead of Ghana WAFU Cup clash

Head coach of Nigeria Salisu Yusuf has expressed his determination to get one over Ghana when the two sides clash in the ongoing WAFU Cup.

The Super Eagles recorded a 2-0 victory over Sierra Leone in the preliminary round of the competition at the Cape Coast Stadium on Monday to set up a tie with Ghana in Group A.

And speaking to reporters after the Sierra Leone match, coach Yusuf intimated that his charges are poised to see off sworn rivals Ghana when the two sides meet on next Monday.

“When you talk about a football match between Nigeria and Ghana, it is at a different level,” Yusuf said in a Nigeria Football Federation press release on Tuesday.

“Whether it is a Cup final or a friendly match, both teams give their very best. That is what we are going to do on Thursday (Monday now), and I am sure the Ghanaians will come to the party with the same mind."

“The victory over Sierra Leone was good for the team. Psychologically, we are now attuned to going all out in every game as we aim to go all the way."

In terms of marketability, i think the championship is better. You get better exposure. If you are not in a champions league team in Turkey, you will hardly be noticed. Omeruo could not get even a mediocre championship side to bid for him.

Turkish league is higher in quality.

My point have been the quality of the leagues. Championship has nothing on the Turkish league.

I will rather watch Trabzonspur play Besiktas than Rotherham vs Cardiff.

that should be King Osanga... I can still remember that long range shot against Spain with De Gea in goal. It was from the center line.

That set had the likes of Orelesi, Ajiboye, Rabiu, Chrisantus, etc they were so promising... But I think the death of their boss then Coach Tella was one of the reason most of them went into oblivion. Cos only very few of them made it to Cairo 2009 U-20 World Cup. Where Orelesi scored a Zappacosta's exquisite goal from the left which tore the net...

Nigeria: Mikel's Long Passes Can Help Nigeria Cage Zambia, Says Adelabu

By Gowon Akpodonor

As the countdown begins ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles and Chipolopolo of Zambia, former Green Eagles winger, Adegoke Adelabu has suggested that team captain, John Obi Mikel must be ready to supply long passes from the midfield for his teammates to finish the job upfront.

The Super Eagles are currently leading the table with 10 points, while the Chipolopolo with seven points will visit Uyo on October 7. After beating Algeria back-to-back, the Zambians are burning with the desire to clinch the group B ticket and make their debut appearance at the World Cup.

To Adelabu, such desire by the Chipolopolo must be cut short in Uyo. "I watched the Zambia versus Algeria match, and as an ex-player, coach and football scientist, I foresee a situation where they (Zambia) will come to Uyo to play their usual physical football. The Eagles were a bit lucky in our last two games against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun because the Camerounians played organized football. That is not the case with Zambia.

"Their midfielders and defenders will do everything to frustrate Victor Moses and Odion Ighalo from scoring because of their physical pattern of football. In that case, Mikel must be ready to do the job from the midfield because he is very good with his long passes. Mikel must be fit to stay longer in the game, and with one long pass, he has succeeded in dividing the Zambian team into two. Mikel should always look for a way to put the ball behind the Zambians for our attackers to sneak into their vital area and score. We need the three points so that our journey to Algeria will be a mere formality," Adelabu stated.

Nigeria: CHAN Eagles Going for Glory Despite Poor Preparation - Coach Salisu Yusuf

Home-Based Super Eagles' Coach Salisu Yusuf is thrilled by the performance of his wards in Monday's game against Sierra Leone despite the limited time they had to prepare for their opening game of the on-going WAFU Nations Cup holding in Ghana, reports ghanasoccernet.com.

Moses Okoro and Moses Peter scored a goal apiece in the final five minutes of the tie to hand the Super Eagles a 2-0 win at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and see them progress into the group stage.

Yusuf made it clear that Nigeria's preparation for the WAFU tournament took a back seat while they were playing Cameroon in back-to-back 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

"We didn't have training [except for] one day because we were so much concerned with the World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon," he told the post-match press conference.

"It's the most important. We have qualified for CHAN [African Nations Championship], so we had to take a risk that all our concentration will be on the World Cup first.

"It was a good decision and it was a good game, because we came here with the same squad that played Benin in the last CHAN qualifier and we played the same system.

Nigeria: Super Eagles and Russia 2018 - Don't Roll Out the Drums Yet

opinion By Adegbenro Adebanjo

The accolades are coming in torrents and some have started the celebration. There is that feel of good aura pervading the whole nation, especially among the legion of followers of the round leather game. Suddenly like a bolt out of the blue the Super Eagles have found their rhythm. And something a number of people thought impossible now looks plausible. Yes, hope is rising and the expectation among the country's legion of football followers is that Nigeria's name will appear among the best football playing countries of the Globe when the World Cup opens in Russia in 2018. Expectedly politicians, community leaders, sports buffs, football administrators and, of course, those at the commanding heights of governance at various levels are falling over themselves to salute and identify with the Super Eagles whose resurgence is at once unbelievable and comforting especially in this season of strikes, kidnappings and general unease in the land.

Without doubt, there is something to celebrate about the resurgence of the Super Eagles. Here is a team that failed to qualify for the last African Nations Cup which was won by the indomitable lions of Cameroon. And when they were drawn against Cameroon, the reigning African Champion, Algeria and Zambia in the World Cup qualification series, the Super Eagles were written off. But contrary to expectations and the permutations of bookmakers the Super Eagles went to Zambia and snatched a well-deserved three points from the Chipolopolo. And when the Desert Warriors, said to be the best team in the group came to Uyo, Nigeria, they were dealt a debilitating blow from which they are yet to recover going by their lacklustre performance so far. That 3-1 victory in Uyo was the harbinger of a new beginning for the Super Eagles and things are looking good. Thereafter it was the turn of the African Champions. The Lions of Cameroun and the perpetual nemesis of Nigeria thought it was going to be business as usual. After all, they came to Uyo with their full squad including their young and agile goalkeeper.

In spite of the win against Algeria and Zambia even the incurable optimists could not have predicted the outcome of the two legged encounter with Cameroon. On September 1, 2017 when the battle was joined at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo everybody waited with baited breadth. At the end of proceedings the Eagles totally dominated and eventually caged the Lions beating them by 4-0. Nine points in three matches simply turned the doubting Thomases to believers and the road to the World Cup 2018 in Russia seems to be becoming smoother by the day. Four days after, the Eagles made assurance double sure when they went to the lion's den in Yaounde and came back with a respectable 1 -1 draw further consolidating their hold on the leadership of their group.

However, more than the win against Cameroon, it is the camaraderie, sense of purpose and skills displayed on and off the field of play that is showing that we have a new Super Eagles on the mend. The impact of Captain Mikel Obi and Victor Moses is worthy of note in the new breadth of fresh air in the team. Of course, Moses Simon, Leon Balogun, Ogenyi Onazi, Aaron Samuel, Kelechi Ihenacho, Odion Ighalo, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Elderson Echiejile and their other co-travellers have also contributed their own quota. The technical crew led by Gernot Rohr is also showing that it has finally gotten its acts together and it can build a team out of a bunch of individual players with differing skills.

But Moses and Mikel Obi have stood out so far. The work rate of Victor Moses in Uyo and Yaounde was outstanding. He was all over the field. Apart from his good runs upfront, he also came in from time to time to help the defence. The Chelsea man stamped his authority on the two legged encounter with sublime skills that left opponents in quandary time and time again. Such awe-inspiring skill was last seen during the era of the electrifying Kanu Nwakwo and the mercurial Austin J. J. Okocha. Take for instance, the run up to the missed goal of Victor Moses during the return leg with the Lion of Cameroun. One of his mates had located him with a telegraphic pass close to the opponents eighteen. He sold a dummy to two defenders, in a split second, he looked up, picked the position of the goal keeper, chose his spot and swerved to his side before sending what the late Ernest Okonkwo would have described as an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile of a shot which unfortunately hit the upright to the chagrin of the Nigerian band of supporters and the relief of their Cameroonian counterparts. Indeed we can safely say that the Super Eagles have played themselves back into the hearts of Nigerians and have restored hope and believability in their ability and the competence of Gernot Rohr and his technical bench.

But then it is not time yet to roll out the drums and start painting the town red. Yes the Russia 2018 ticket is almost certain and only a catastrophic mishap can stop the Eagles. But it is not over until it is over. Therefore, Rohr and his wards should redouble efforts and stave off all distractions. The two remaining matches are critical. However, the home match against Zambia in October is more critical as it is a must win one. The Zambians still have an outside chance of snatching the ticket, that is if Nigeria underrates them and allow them to win in Uyo. They have nothing to lose and a lot to gain and would want to throw their all into the battle of Uyo. So to be on the safe side, the Eagles must feast on the Chipolopolo in Uyo and thereby make their last match against Desert Warriors in Algiers a mere formality. It is only after the win against Zambia in Uyo that we can roll out the drums and begin the celebration of another World Cup qualification. But then that celebration too should not go on and on. It must be terminated at some point for the preparation for the main event which must begin immediately after the ticket for participation has been won.

And a note of warning here: Politicians and ethnic jingoists and religious zealots with parochial agenda should keep off the Super Eagles before they derail the march to Russia. Football is one of the few things that bind Nigerians together therefore ethnic colourations and religious calculation on the composition of the team should not form part of the narrative of the New Super Eagles. All extraneous individuals should keep off and allow Nigerians to savour the few moments of respite being provided by the Eagles and their handlers.

UYL : Noah Okafor Makes Debut As Man Utd, Basel Play Out Seven-Goal Thriller

Promising Nigerian midfielder Noah Okafor made his UEFA Youth League debut for FC Basel in their 4-3 loss to Manchester United U19s at Leigh Sports Village Company on Tuesday afternoon.

The 17-year-old entered in to the fray in the 53rd minute with his team trailing 2-1.

Aidan Barlow gave Manchester United the lead after six minutes, only for Pululu to restore parity on 14 minutes.

Indy Boonen scored five minutes out of intermission to put United back on top, before Angel Gomes scored from the penalty spot to double the advantage seven minutes later.

Lokaj reduced the deficit on 58 minutes, then the Red Devils scored through Bohui before Kaiser netted the final goal of the game in the 66th minute.

Okafor has sparkled for Switzerland U17s since he was promoted to the squad a year ago, scoring 3 goals from 7 matches while providing 2 assists.

If the midfielder decides to represent the Super Eagles in future, Fifa has to change his nationality as he has played competitively for Switzerland youth team.

A few days ago I came across a guy who was a senior part of Tottenham's youth development coaching team, he was there for over 10 years. He said to me that up until 16/18 they considered letting Kane go he wasn't outstanding. His view its almost impossible to tell who is going to be exceptional up to even age 15/16.

that is totally true. Many things change, biologically and psychologically. I remember when we were in junior secondary, we had a guy who was quite tall for his age and he was the best number 9 by far, he was taller than us and quicker than us all, the day I marked him it didn't go down so well(not trying to blow my horn but I was the best CB) but he did score from a long ball still. When we got to senior secondary and we all got tall, even got taller than him we found out just how average he is, he wasn't even close to the top 10 number 9s we had in the school.

This case was because of his physical advantage, there are many things that could lead to a young lad losing steamwhen he gets older

Adegoke Adelabu made a good point. I am all for those long passes, if well coordinated. I used to tell my players, you keep playing those long range passes as long as they keep hitting the target. But if your long range passes keep going to "no one in particular", then we'll have to reassess grin

Anyway, I think players like Mikel and Ndidi can hit them so we might as well take advantage of those. We'll also need to take long range shots from outside the 18 yard box. Again, players like Ndidi, Onazi, and a few others pack bullets in their feet and should be unleashed to use them. I watched several EPL games last Saturday and about 75% of all the goals scored were shots taken from outside the 18 yard box. We can definitely employ that tactics if Zambia decides to pack the bus a la Jose Mourinho grin

Sometimes, I feel like Ndidi doesn't get the praise he deserves from sports journalists in Nigeria, especially as regards this new generation of players.

It's always Kelechi and Iwobi in the news, but Ndidi has stamped more authority in recent times both for club and country
ndidi only crime is that he is in Leicester...
I watched chelsea match yesterday...I can tell you ndidi is just in same class of players like bakayoko....even better had it been he play for a team that maintain more ball possessions in games

Ndidi wil not work in a possession-based team at all. He is the chase-the-ball kind of the guy

bro...forget it.the ndidi I see despite being a DM....can make judicious use of such kind of play....though he can as well do virtually most of the dirty job in the midfield...
but opportunities will abound for him to score goals and as well contribute to the attack....
I watched Leicester last pre season match... there is so much about that lad we don't know yet...

considering his success in Belgium where he plays in one of the league best team...
he shone like a milion stars...

Overweight' Carlos Tevez benched indefinitely at Shanghai Shenhua - Wu

Carlos Tevez is "overweight'' and will not play for Shanghai Shenhua again until he improves his fitness, according to the club's caretaker manager Wu Jingui.

Striker Tevez, who is reportedly the world's highest-paid player on £650,000 a week, has struggled for form in China and has only scored twice in 11 appearances.

The 33-year-old former Manchester United, Manchester City and West Ham forward joined Shenhua from Boca Juniors on Dec. 29 last year.

He has been recovering from a muscle injury in his native Argentina, but on his return to China has been told he needs to get in shape in order to play.

"I will not pick him right now. He's not ready physically. He's not fit to play,'' Wu told the South China Morning Post.

"He is overweight, along with [Fredy] Guarin. I have to take responsibility for the team and the players as well.

"If you are unable do your utmost to play, there's no point in picking you. I have coached lots of big stars, and my players are never picked on reputation.''

Shenhua, who are 11th in the Super League, named Wu caretaker after former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet resigned earlier this week.
