Your online banking details are your responsibility to protect.
Banks will ALWAYS warn you against sharing your online details with anybody, not even with your family members.

Her situation is sad, just like every other fraud case but ignorance is not excusable and she will have to go home and bear her loss.

1) How long from mama's first visit to the DB manager to the 2nd visit?

2) Did the DB Manager get back to her as promised?

3) How come no one stays with the mama who could help her manage her a/c and finances?

It's very easy to lay blames, but the mama's children have their own fault. Go pick your mother if you are so rich enough. Leave the bank manager alone.

How you take they reason like this ?

These boys keep fleecing innocent old people off their hard earned monies.

They may not know it just yet but they will never end well as karma will sure catch up with them.

It is so easy for grannies like this poor lady to fall for their usual fake customer service calls. They will claim something is wrong with your BVN and then demand for your card details (PIN, Security and all)!

How many older Nigerians are wary enough not to fall for this cruel scam? When caught, idiots who fleece vulnerable pensioners like this should serve no less than 20 years in prison for such a callous crime.

Sadly, there is absolutely nothing the bank can do about this particular matter as the prerogative of care is solely the responsibility of the card holder.

While i agree that the bank is not liable especially considering the woman gave out personal details, banks in general can do more to help customers. What is the point of the KYC noise that all make if they cannot help her track down the owner of the bank account the funds went into. All these useless banks know how to do is make you fill rubbish forms, then they go through the motion of nonsense verifications of home address before opening the account. If they follow the money and as long as they have one account the money went into, the culprits can be found!
Do you really believe the fraudster will pass the money though their own accounts? Do kidnappers make ransom demands from phone numbers registered in their own names? Do armed robbers operate with vehicles registered in their own names or do they used snatched vehicles, which they abandon afterwards? The bank can only be held liable if the victim did not divulge sensitive information to anyone. If you have ever given a relative or friend your debit card to withdraw for you, you are also guilty of divulging sensitive information and should pray your money doesn't start disappearing. Do you think the person will forget your PIN after the withdrawal? What if you forget to change the PIN afterwards? You hold the bank responsible right? Congratulations.

All this fraudsters and scammers are just evil, God will surely judge them.

I believe Banks should disable all online and mobile transaction as default and then only enable it if the banks customer or client so wishes, so that this fraud and scam on elderly people will stop.
Most elderly people are not to conversant with this new procedures, they still prefer going directly to the banks to transact business.

Most times the other account is also a compromised account whose owner has no idea about the situation. I really don't believe a fraudster will use his own account, with all his personal information. The important thing is to educate Nigerians on confidentiality of personal information in general. Even on the internet, social media etc. Keep your life to yourself, you don't know who is liking your posts and pictures and updates.

Why haven't they put a WANTED PERSON photograph everywhere? What' the point in doing fingerprint and facial registration?
Arrest whoever owns the fidelity bank account.
Get the atm footage of whoever withdrew the money.

That's how my friends tuition (60k) was withdrawn by a ghost in uba and nothing happened.

They are not liable to begin with. I doubt if the manager is authorized to cushion the effect of her ignorance and also I think it is foolish to encourage banks to give money either in part of in whole. It is business not a charity and they have to do that for a very long lousy of people. It is an unfortunate case, they can only wish her the best.

I knew the bank will come up with a very well orchestrated denial story and wont accept liability in any way, if Diamondbank is a responsible bank that cares about customers, the right thing to do is give mama at least half of the money while they investigate and try to recover the money. What if that money is the only hope for that old woman, do you expect her to die of hunger while they keep speaking big big grammar? angry

A pensioner, Mrs Comfort Ashaye was allegedly chased away by Diamond Bank manager in Ikeji, Lagos after she went to lay complaint of her accumulated pension of N572k which disappeared from her account

President/Founder of Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria CAFON, Sola Salako Ajulo shared the story yesterday seeking investigation and refund for the woman.

We have now obtained the alleged true story of what really happened. Read the report from a Diamond Bank staff below…

Our customer (comfort Ashaye) came to the branch sometime in march this year to transact and was told she had insufficient bal of N2 on her account..she expressed confusion and pain. The branch mgr took her into her office to comfort her and get better clarity on her account status. Upon further probe, it was discovered numerous mobile app withdrawals from her acct in excess of N500k. She was.asked if she had permitted/authorized any transaction by any means. She said no but informed of a certain male that called her asking for her BVN details. She also informed she hardly used her phone as its always under her pillow at home. Though she had the phone with her that fateful day and she showed the branch manager and DB staff the no that called her, which was a privately owned no (080). Further investigations led the DB staff to call the no which was answered but the guy also hung up as quickly as he picked it. Mamas phone also showed evidence of a 4 digit code- her mobile app pin in her sent msgs to this same unknown no. She claimed that she lived alone and all her kids lived elsewhere. However, DB promised to investigate further to assist urgently. Her subsequent visit after the easter break was with her son who came and he caused a scene witnessed by customers at the banking hall. He rained abuses, threats, causes and even called DB fraudulent. The bank security team came Into.the hall due to.this and with the DB staff tried to calm him and mama also joined to plead on his behalf. The DB branch team confirmed to mama that the matter had been escalated to the fraud unit in the bank and the unit had identified one od the fraudulent withdrawals to an account at fidelity bank and they were contacted to block the acct.although the funds had been moved since and the account owners unreachable. Following that feedback to mama ashaye, the branch was visited by an investigative journalist, who wanted our side of the story before going public. As per their policy, he was asked to get the customers introductory letter as the customers information was private. however he was informed of what transpired at mama’s initial visit and the fact that she was. called by an unknown person and her pin sent to.the same number. The journalist expressed surprise as these details were unknown to him and he reiterated that he could use same number to track the criminals as he had successfully done in the past. He collected the branch manager details and promised to come back to the bank within 2 weeks, but was not heard from him again. The investigation was also concluded and customer was fully briefed of their negligence and the bank was not liable but she maintained that she won’t take that, accusing that there must be an insider. This matter was since concluded in April after the son’s threat to deal with the bank.

The bank alreayd has full name, picture, address, phone number n BVN number of the thief... If they can't trace him, then there's an insider indeed.

Give her half the money because they are an insurance company?

No matter where they take the case to, the woman will lose the case. She can only hope the fraudsters are caught.

Going by your logic, I can collude with someone to "defraud" me, then I go to my bank and create a scene, then my bank will give me half of the money because they have insurance. I thought this government was meant to be fighting corruption.

I am very well informed about business laws and liabilities thank you! All i am saying is there are certain exceptional cases where an organization must be compassionate, we are not talking about a couple of thousands missing from the old womans account, her entire money was stolen, if mama was hypertensive and died of stroke in the bank premises, do you reckon they will still be speaking grammar? Do you know what that will have done to the image of the bank? angry

What stupidity!

If you are responsible why don't you organise in your family to give Mama the money.

A bank should share its shareholder funds to a 3rd party due to her own error?

Since when did banks become social welfare establishments?

And Nigerian youths would wonder why people say they are unemployable. Who go employ you when you reason like this?
