This is exactly why this thread was created. Unfortunately, many just use it to gain information and then they leave without giving anything back.

What exactly do you want to know? Have you read recent exam transcripts? There are a few some pages back. You can ask some questions and I'll try to answer them.

If it's quant and just quant.

Pm me let's see what we can arrange, since I am not in Abj, I would be more of a guide than a tutor but it's definitely depending on your commitment and dedication.

Hi guys,
after one week of focusing on only quant, I've realised that I need serious help. I don't think a tutorial center will help me because they won't focus on just quant, I also don't have time to go during the day, because of my job.

I'm thinking of getting a GRE maths tutor. if there's anyone here who fits the bill, or can make I recommendation, it will be greatly appreciated. please note that I need a personal tutor and not a tuition center because of the flexibility, my budget is also not very high (but I'm willing to compensate said tutor).
The location is Abuja
my exam date is Nov 19.

true. we can still go about doing that you know. share specifics. i think that would be more helpful than say giving a cliche advice's( not saying they don't but i don't believe they are practical).
for instance , i did the practice exams for official gre verbal reasoning guide and scored 0 and 1 on the hard sections and i thought......how in hell are fellow aspirants answering this questions.....like the words are very very hard. so did anybody work on those hard sections? i would love to know what you did there

Dear Friends,

I am working towards PhD Economics, I know MS is usually not funded, but if funded, I am willing. My scores are below
GPA 4.52 on 5
GRE 313 Q 160 V. 153 AWA 4
2 publications indexed in RePEc

What I need
I am aware nobody may search for school on my behalf, I know it is my responsibility. But I will be glad to have suggestions from you friends in the race, if you have any experience about any school, where you think my profile fits in, I will be glad to have your suggestions.

I have been researching too, just getting a lot of discouragement, some will state low scores, but by the time I check them out on Gradcafe, I wil still see a lot of rejections for the same profile they claim to accept, why? "big scores" also applied! some require low scores but have little to no money. Please help me

advice on your chance of getting a scholarship?
hmm i would say you have 50/50 chance and since you asked for an advice i would admonish you to take your tests first and then go about researching about scholarships cause GRE can be so time consuming and arduous too.

There is nothing you can do about your CGPA again. Funny enough, it is not that low. For now, work more on acing your GRE as that is one of those things you could perchance control and augment your application. Goodluck

Actually, I do not know much, but I know that at the front of that reject or accept, there's usually a red point, just click on it, it will show GPA and GRE

My advice: Ace the GRE and prove through your scores that your relatively low GPA may have resulted from other factors other than intellectual vitality. You will have the opportunity to give reasons for your relatively lower GPA in your SOP. Plus, your SOP should be deliberately crafted in a way that your memories will remain indelible on the minds of the admissions committee. If you have volunteered for causes relating to public health or have relevant work experience and also have strong references from people that matter in the field, then your overall profile will even be stronger. In a nutshell, make your overall profile look so great that you relatively low GPA will not matter.

The basic definition of research is to collect, analyze and interpret data. In a way, it is very similar to statistics as statisticians do exactly that. But on a more closer inspection of the term, research entails contributing something entirely new to an extensive body of work; it involves investigating extant data and reaching new conclusions while at it.

So how does that relate to you? Well, do you see numbers in people? Do you find yourself using strange numbers to identify certain instances or events? Do you sometimes count rice grains on your plate each time you eat it and take note of how many grains the average person your height and build will need to consume to feel full?

It is obvious I am overstating what getting into your field involves but someone who wants to bring something new to the preponderance of data we currently are saddled with has to have such intuition and innovation needed to extract data intelligently. You have to either present us with new devices, methods or creativity to understand the data we have, or you must have a simpler and more helpful way of reaching new conclusions and relaying information.

The steps involved in partaking in research in your field is not different from any other; You must hypothesize, investigate, test/experiment/devise methodology, observe, conclude and report or the other way around. Just that, the ability to produce something noteworthy in your field relies more on one's quantitative reasoning and ability to spot patterns rather than their curiosity and expression (even though both are needed).

Based on what your nouveau conclusions are, your research work could be adopted and used in pharmaceuticals, government policy-making, financial markets, rocket-making and launching or even in the Tech world. As long as people need data, they would need simpler ways to interpret or extract it and how well you come up with ways to manipulate this data, shows your ability to research.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Hi.

I think I can give an hindsight to what you truly mean since I had my undergraduate degree in Statistics as well, however the advise I'd give are purely mine and is subjected to criticisms. I'd be giving anecdotes which I believe will help you also.

First, what do you truly want to do? A degree in statistics will open your eyes to many fields (supposing you're good enough) such as Data Science, Economics, Quantitative economics, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Quantitative finance, and other fields that requires computing /calculations. I was once in your shoes, now I'm in a Quantitative Economics programme for my masters degree.

From the above, I believe you now know a degree in Statistics provides you with a wide range of options (provided your quantitative skills are good). However, since your question stated you're only concerned about "research ", I would implore you to decide what field you want to apply "your statistics" to - from this, you can now decide the research you want to delve into. Also, get some programming skills - Learning R or Python + SAS, Java or C++ won't hurt. In fact, I can categorically say, if you're proficient with any of these, research becomes easier as you would be faces with solving problems and where does research stem from? Problems of course!

Moreover, volunteer to analyze undergraduates projects, be closer to a lecturer in your department whom you know is smart [sic], take your thesis and internship (IT) seriously and when you're done? Write GRE and TOEFL, on your SOP state the above listed skills (provided you acquired them) and experiences; emphasize on how you believe these skills are useful in graduate school, how you believe you can succeed and how the department's requirements fits your description.

I'm sorry I can't explain further as I'm very busy, but please "graduate with a First Class degree or a very strong 2:1". I never regretted graduating the top of my school as it had opened lots of opportunities.

I would leave the rest to my boss (Baum1) and GboyegaD. We all have similar profile (BSc. Statistics). I hope they can contribute.

P. S: Pardon my grammar errors, I don't have time to edit anything now.

Best.

hello,
i am new here

please i would love to get more info as per the canadian universities.

i have a cgpa of 3.86/5. is that high enough? please kindly reply......also what do u mean by LOR, SOP

GlitteringStar:

Hello,

Are you keen on studying in USA only? If no, then why don't you apply to Canadian Universities? Most Canadian Universities do not require GRE and with your low GRE score, it will still go a long way in strengthening your application. If you have a high CGPA, I feel there is no need for you to retake GRE. The exam is only a part of your application. You can work on other parts like LOR, SOP and co. I got an admission offer with partial funding despite my low exam score (Though, I intend to retake the exam because I want full funding). @Ndawe was also admitted with full funding in two schools despite her low GRE score.

Anyway, you can send a PM to me. I can only support you with the part payment (if you can get someone to pay the rest).

I wish you the best!

@Scholastica16 (your good news is around the corner kiss) and DreManuel, you are both doing a great job on this thread.

I really appreciate your swift response Sir.For the field I am most interested in,I will say Quantitative Finance, I know a little about R,Python and java but i really need to become proficient in it. my cgpa is somewhere around 3.8+ put i still want to make 4.0+ which is still feasible.
Thanks once again.

This is extremely apt and I am sure this has enlightened very many more reading on here.
Glad to know you studied Statistics at Undergrad level, in fact, you truly deserve a pat on the back for graduating top of your class.

As a penultimate Statistics undergrad student too, who is keen on pursuing grad studies in the said field or Finance related course.

Given, your high profile which has already helped in securing admission into a Quantitative Economics for your Masters.

It is however important to note that securing admission into these programs are extremely competitive especially from someone who hasn't taken any elective in the Economics department especially Micro and Macro Economics. Most schools expect one to have taken it at least till the end of one's sophomore year.

In that sense, I'll really appreciate if you can tell us how
you made your application competitive.
Was it that you complemented your extremely high GPA with a jaw-dropping GRE score?
Do you have some Economics courses on your transcript?
Please, do not mind my being too curious.
I only want to know what do to bridge the gap before I leave College.

Thanks.
