CAPTAIN'S SURVIVOR'S LOG. THESBIAN RECRUIT. PLATOON 5 - MAINTENANCE CORE

36/05/3404 ON LAST DATE.

CRASH DATE 1[Edited to the local dialect "Engrish" at the request of my host human, secret keeper and roomate, Amaefuna]

My name is Locar don, a Thesbian recruit aboard the Star-ship Recluse. Following the recent scarcity of mineral resources, our vessel was on a mission to trade plutonium from the Scabites in Sector 3, a route that would take us directly through the infamous milky-way galaxy and human habitation; thus, we decided to go behind Saturn's inner rings to avoid detection. Albeit a risky venture, but the Thesbian nation has been in dire need of energy following the last political conflict on our planet. Captain Uber don is a skilled pilot and can fly circles around the best of our fleet. Unfortunately even he couldn't maneuver around Saturn's deadly rings. We came across an unexpected meteorite shower which tore into our left flank and destroyed five engines. The Captain was able to steer the ship to the only habitable planet on our records where we crashed violently into a canyon. The impact killed everybody on board except me, which is why I have the authority to input this data in keeping with protocol.

On first inspection on my exit of the starship unto Mars, it became obvious that I would need to do an update on our history books. The Red Planet is dead. I have been wandering around the canyons for days and have not found a living soul. There are a few silicon based shrubs here and there, and some sign of bacterial life, otherwise the planet is empty. High levels of radiation from their atomic wars still remain, a deadly reminder of the terrible things that happened here. All the cities and countries, all the people have been blown away to red dust. What we thought was the most habitable planet is no longer habitable.

Mars is dead. They finally destroyed themselves.

I shudder at the human race.

I had to return back to the Ship after a while to see if the life-detection computers were still working so they could scan how far Earth and Venus had developed. Surely there would be some food and water there. Four of the escape pods had survived the crash intact and they had enough fuel to take me to either of the planets and back; not much but it was a start. I knew if I stayed here I would certainly die. The only source of food left here were the bodies of my dead colleagues and much as I knew they would be honored in the afterlife to have their bodies sustain me, I didn't want matters to get to that level of desperation before I acted. I carried Captain Uber's body from the command chair, grimacing at the deep gash in his forehead where his brain matter had spilled out. He hadn't decomposed at all as the ship's life support systems kept the bodies fresh even though their souls had long departed. I placed him beside his Mistress Tempi, both had finally had their wish of dying on the same day. I sort of went into a trance, carrying all eighteen passengers and placing them side by side in the ship's bay, making sure everyone was accounted for. I said a tumat of prayer for the peaceful progression of their souls and then proceeded to take command of the captain's chair. I ordered the computer to scan the nearby planets and sure enough Earth and Venus indicated thriving signs of life. Earth's life capacity was at a full 100% while Venus was at 89% and Earth was closer so I decided to make plans for Earth. Life forms visible were humanoid on both planets but Venus'es thick cover clouds made for a much reduced population. Earth had 6,214,230,451 humanoid forms inhabiting it. It would be much easier blending in there.

I spent the rest of the day burying my fallen colleagues and collecting all that I would need for my journey to earth. I set up a rescue beacon on Mars in case any other star-ship would dare pass by this route so they could pick up the signal and come rescue me. I hid three of the pods in the famour Kar-Ek mountain, now a rubble of its old self but riddled with enough caves to make a good hiding place. I did this as a precaution in case it was Demetrons that found my crashed ship first; knowing how scavengeous they can be.

The yellow sun is just setting over the horizon of the Red Planet. I stare wistfully at it one more time. Mars was a wonderful civilization once. I hope the humans have learnt their lesson. By this yellow sun's rotation it would take me three days to get to Earth. I entered the Escape Pod with my scant belongings, put the vessel on autopilot, said a prayer and activated hyper-sleep.

The last thing I heard was the gentle throbbing of the pod's engines as they came to life, lifting me off the surface of Mars, off this once wonderful and glorious planet.

Here I come, Earth.[/quote]

How do you convince a weapon-wielding primitive human with all his base instincts of jealousy and self-preservation that you mean no harm, despite the fact that he found you naked with his mate?

On my planet Thesebes it would have been a simple case of letting him read my aura to show that I had no ill intentions, but the human species were actually famous for being the most populous species who did NOT want to develop their psychic abilities. They relied more on their five most physical prominent senses and largely scoffed at the sense of instinct, intuition and the likes. I was currently facing down a very angry and quite large male with a gun and the situation looked very dire as he cocked his weapon. Despite being primitive, it could cause very real damage to my person.

I decided to try the basic universal approach.

I bowed my head low in surrender with my palms open and outstretched.

"Greetings, oh noble hunter and protector, may your days be long!" I hailed him in his native tongue. "Please pardon my appearance, I lost my clothes in an unfortunate accident and now I am stranded. I approached your wife for a place to stay until tomorrow and she kindly agreed before she saw my lack of clothing. Please do not take offence and I will leave in peace."

I had my head bowed down, avoiding eye contact the whole time and praying for a miracle. I could feel the man catch his breath and mumble to his wife "Why is he talking strangely like that? Who is he?"

"I don't know Prie, I just opened the door and saw him like that!"

There was some silence as I waited to see what the man would do even as i remained in my subdued position. Suddenly there was a click and then some things landed on my outstretched hands. I looked up finally to see the man studying at me albeit cautiously.

"He is not a mad man..." his wife quipped, still hiding behind the door. "He's too clean to be a madman."

"Put some clothes on." He said. "You sound like our village prophet, or one of his assistants..." His eyes grew more suspicious; "Or a spirit perhaps? Come to spy on us and see to my child?"

I straightened up and turned the "clothes" he had thrown to me over in my hands, I wasn't quite sure how they were supposed to be put on. This seemed to further convince the man that I was from the "spirit world". He nodded to his wife knowingly and she opened the door wider.

"Here, let me help you put on the clothes. He said, leaning the gun against the ladder and walking boldly towards me. He took his time to help me adorn myself. The clothes fit loosely but i felt much more comfortable in them, not that I really needed them since the human skin I wore as supplied with enough nanotechnology to keep me warm, or cool depending on the weather. He then took me inside and made me sit at a corner. His wife watched us, fear in her eyes but not a word emanating from her mouth. "Prie" as he was called, sat beside me and smiled in an attempt to appear friendly.

"My wife and I do not have much but what we have we will offer." He beckoned to her, "bring the rice and meat, bring the biggest meat in the pot!" He turned back to me with that same pseudo-smile.

Something was obviously going on but I had no idea what it was. Humans were not known to be this nice to strangers.

The woman brought the rice and meat and some water. I thanked them both and began to eat. The food tasted a little off, but i wasn't about to refuse their hospitality. I finished the meal quickly, all the while with the man smiling at me and the woman watching warily.

"Are you satisfied?" He asked when I was through.

"Yes, thank you very much. The meal was delicious." I lied.

"Alright. Now can you see my child?"

"What?"

The man blinked in surprise and a glint of annoyance and impatience showed in his face.

"I have done everything I was told you people of the water like. I have clothed you and given you food without fish. The best in the house. Aren't you going to pay me back?"

Miscommunication.

I suddenly realized what he wanted. he must have thought i was some sort of spirit sent to do something for the child. I considered telling him to the contrary but then advised myself against it.

"Let me see the child" I said in an authoritative voice.

The man immediately got up and went to the woman who still clung to her son, reluctant to let him go. The man spoke harshly to her at first, demanding she hand the child over, and she began to cry. He stopped immediately and said something soothing and reassuringly, gently prying the sleeping child from her grasp. She turned away from us as he brought the child back to me.

"Here, " He said.

As soon as I touched the child I knew something was wrong. His body temperature was way higher than it should be for this habitation. His vital signs were extremely weak and it was then i saw how emaciated he was. There were scarification marks all over his abdomen, fresh ones and old and his fetid breath betrayed signs of herbal intoxication. His hands and feet were swollen and his forehead was enlarged, all signs of a genetic abnormality. This human boy was in a lot of pain and very ill, too ill to survive to his fifth year. I surreptitiously did a quick bioscan on him by passing my hands over his body, the nanobots on my palms feeding me information in the process.

"This child is very sick." I said. "His genetic programming is obsolete for this environment. He will require a complete recombination and disruption splicing..."

Prie looked at me perplexed. Even with the human speech download he was having difficulty understanding as the words I spoke had no meaning in his dialect. I could be chanting in unknown tongues for all he knew.

The sick child stirred in my arms and his father flinched. I saw the concern in his eyes and the furtive glances from the worried mother. I sighed. It would take a days energy stores to perform an emergency splicing for the boy during which i would be completely at their mercy. Then again if I didn't help I was not sure what my fate would be at the hands of the man. I could try to overpower them both but I was more of a maintenance guy and less of a combatant...

And they seemed so desperate.

I decided to trust in good will.

I lay the child down on the wooden floor of the hut and knelt beside him. I took off the little clothes he had on and he whimpered in pain as I moved his joints. I placed my hands over his body and an ethereal glow emanated from the palms of my hands as the nanobots carried out laser surgery on a submicroscopic level. The man and his wife were not alarmed, but rather watched in respectful silence. It took much longer than I had expected, about two hours and then I was done. Completely drained I fell back on the floor and motioned for them to take the child.
Both parents jumped forward immediately.

"Is he...?" The mother was too afraid to compete the question.

"The defective genes have all been replaced. He will be alright as soon as you give him some food."

As if on cue the child yawned and woke up. He sat up on his own, looked around and got shakily to his feet. For the first time I saw awe in Prie's face. His mother let out a small gasp and grabbed the boy, crying and laughing as she hugged the now struugling child to her bossom. Prie gawked at the child and then at me.

"He has not walked in seven days! My master, this house is yours! Whatever you want we will do our best to give...!"

"Can I sleep here?" I asked quickly. " I will need a while to regain my strength..."

"Please! Stay as long as you want!" Prie replied.

I stayed with the couple for another week. During that time I learnt a lot more about their culture and habits. Pereyei was an eager teacher and an excellent host, as far as he was concerned he couldn't do enough for me. I found out that he was almost 50 years of age and the child i had saved was his first. His wife was a little less old, in her thirties. They had been living together for the past fifteen years now and were unable to have offspring. Their first miracle child turned out to be an abbherent...a sickler, they called it. After the first transfusion at a hospital and following the payment of apparently exorbitant bills, Pereyei had decided to seek herbal treatment from his native fathers. From the look of things, he would have failed woefully if I had not happened to come along.

Pereyei refused to listen to any explanation concerning my advanced technology, what he called my "powers". He felt it would be bad luck to find out exactly how the spirits worked. He assured me that he was very content catering to my every need for as long as I stayed under his roof. Apart from clothing, food and shelter, I didn't really need anything else from him. My plan was to move further inland to the city and blend with the locals more, maybe look for a means of employment until I could find a way to fix my ship and return to my home planet. My skin suit was all I was waiting for, as soon as it was fully charged I would be on my way.

I used the opportunity to take a look round Pereyei's village. It was a very small one, about twenty people living some meters apart on the swamp's edge. They made their living from catching and selling fish from the rivers and also from selling some produce from their small farms. Some of them were hunters as well. It was a very rural setting, much like the methane swamp dwellers of Gorlac-1. As with those species, these people also had trouble with pollution. Their swamps were filled with spilled oil and chemical waste. Very dangerous for them, but a bonus for me. I gave the excuse of wanting to look around the village in the evenings. Pereyei easily agreed although from the look in his eyes he knew i was up to something much more.

And he was right. Every night I would seek out areas of toxic waste, collect samples and analyse them to see if they were useful for bio-degradation. I found a very rich source of carbonaceous material in every sample I collected. I went back to my buried pod in the area where I originally crash-landed and activated it. As soon as it came out of the mud, I placed the samples in its palate and programmed it to siphon as much waste as possible from the area for refining and storage. I tried to be as inconspicuous as possible while doing it and was very successful.

The child was doing much better than I had expected. Within that one week it had gained not only in weight but in height. I hadn't had time to configure my bio-scan for human mode before carrying out the healing process and I worried a little that I had given it too much engineered DNA. The side effects wouldn't be too noticeable, or so I hoped. He would grow up bigger and stronger than most of his peers and his immune system would be a tad more efficient than average. He would be able to go days without food or water. And whenever the opportunity arose he would have an almost insatiable desire for meat. I watched him smile and run across to me as I returned to the hut. Each time he would stretch out his arms and I would carry him and marvel at his increased weight. His mother had lost all of her fear for me; that feeling had been replaced instead with the utmost respect and gratitude. She let the boy follow me anywhere, and for a three year old he was highly inquisitive. Sometimes when the parents were outside, I would tell him tales from my planet, the ongoing politics in the intergalactic federation, my fallen comrades and my plans to take them all back home. Of course at his age he wouldn't remember any of it, but it was nice to have someone to talk to.

They named me Abosimagha. I accepted the name in good faith. I was introduced to one or two neighbors but that was it; apparently Pereyei instinctively knew I wanted my presence to be as inconspicuous as possible. Pereyei was a hunter and on some occasions I followed him on his hunting trips. The wildlife on the swamp were bountiful and in abundance although pereyei complained that they had been much more in the previous years. A few of the animals i recognized; snakes, rodents, fish, and the armoured lizards, what Pereyei called crocodiles. Earth was not so far different genetically than the other known planets in the civilized intergalactic federation. They had no dinosaurs though, no grass giants, and no chipouri or flying goats. I tried drawing them for him once, but he didn't recognise any of those speices at all.

Another thing I noticed was that none of these animals could talk. The snakes, the armoured lizards, I could not communicate with a single one from the many that we came across. In my planet, animals like these had elders, members of their species that had lived for so long and acquired so much wisdom that they possessed the gift of speech. It was strange to me, but then again I reasoned that man may have destroyed them all. I was yet to gain access to the planet's central database where I could download a history of man's sojourn on this planet. My bioscanners could pick traces of intelligent computer systems but they were still too far away for me to connect with them. If i had access to their database, then maybe I could find the things i needed to repair my ship on Mars.

And that was part of the reason I decided to leave as soon as possible. On the seventh day, when I saw that I was fully rested and my human suit had recharged completely, I called Pereyei aside.

"I want to thank you so much for your hospitality." I began.

He looked up at me sharply and the smile on his face which had grown more genuine over the days vanished.

"You want to go?" He asked.

"Yes. I have so much to do. I require some things to get back to my people..."

"I could help you get them!" Pereyei interrupted, but I continued

"...which I will not be able to find here. I have scoured this place during my stay. You have some of the things I need, the toxic waste that you showed me in the swamps. I have programmed my pod to collect as much of it as possible at intervals for processing but i still need other chemicals, substances, refined hydrocarbons..."

I could see I was losing him fast so I paused for a moment. Pereyei looked genuinely sad. At that moment his wife and son came into the hut. He turned to them.

"My boy has grown big and strong in this past seven days. My wife has never been happier. and since you have been around I have had good luck in my hunting. You have given us so much and we have reciprocated with so little."

I put my hand on his shoulder. He turned back to me.

"You gave me a place to rest my head and collect my thoughts. That is more than enough repayment."

The boy left his mother's side and walked up to me. He starred at me for some time and I smiled and carried him in my arms. His mother seemed to have caught on to what we were saying and began to shed tears softly. The hut filled with an awkward silence.

"Humph! Enough of this!" Pereyei exclaimed suddenly. "You have done well for us Abosimagha. Know that you will always have a roof over your head here! Let me package some dried meat for you for your journey. You can sell some for money, you will need it where you are going. Take whatever else you need. As soon as you are ready I will escort you to the city.

I nodded in appreciation.
