If French can be made compulsory why can't Yoruba in Yorubaland.

The truth is this is just about resentment to Yoruba and their hold in Lagos.

And Igbo be made compulsory for Yoruba students in the East? I would like you to apply all you have written for the East so as to measure your tolerance level if such is done there.
Waiting for your evidence of hatred.

Because you have been fixated on Igbos therefore it's safe to say you will be glad if Yorubas in the East are equally forced to study Igbo?

As if Nigerian children are not mandated to pass TOEFL and other foreign languages competency test as pre requisite to being admitted into foreign institutions. so what makes learning yoruba a crime for a foreigner /expatriate kids.

First of all, French is not Lagos a wholly diverse area in Nigeria.
French is a language of an European country with colonies scattered around Africa and most of the countries surrounding Nigeria are Francophone countries therefore it is imperative that people pick conversational french to facilitate communication in West Africa.
French is one of the official language of Ecowas and a top language in Africa.
How can you compare French an international language with Yoruba a language that is not spoken by all Nigerians.
There is a reason why French and English are official languages because they serve as a formal lingua franca to people with different mother tongues. So why do you think Nigeria didn't make yoruba, hausa or igbo compulsory for all this while?
Welsh and India are countries not states.
You are illiterate Welsh is a language not a country and Wales is not a country but a region in a country . Wales is no more a country than Lagos is a country
Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia.Use your head
I said that states in India just like Lagos decided that all education instruction at primary school level should take place in the language of the state , in non Hindi speaking states>

All that gibberish you wrote about French does not merit a response. Sorry but you really are not very bright

So because French is international we should learn it and abandon our language? So because Messi is Messi I should wash his clothes and leave mine?

Are you not foolish

Keep your insults please because i was typing fast and wrote Welsh instead of Wales.
India and Nigeria don't have the same linguistic history because while Nigerians were linguistically isolated from each other, hindu language of the Aryans and Northern India was spreading and adopted as a lingua franca by many. In other to protect their languages, the other states esp in the South have to keep their languages in schools and elsewhere.
Don't compare two unlike Nations that have no similar linguistic history.

The spelling is Igbo unless you want me to pick out another spelling for your ethnicity.
You were fixated because you kept placing Igbo were you should place other ethnicities because you believe this bill was passed to mock Igbos.
The bill says Yoruba is compulsory in Lagos therefore all students are to learn yoruba. Are you trying to give it a different interpretation?

This is not a historical but legal and political as well as precedential comparison. Circumstances cannot and do not have to mirror each other. That is why it is India and we are Nigeria.
Fact still is Welsh is compulsory in Wales. French compulsory in Quebec and so on.

We in Lagos have made Yoruba compulsory .If you do not like it go to court

The India you keep referencing don't compel others to learn the language of a state unless they are interested. The long term problems arising from such compulsion is far reaching.

That is not strictly followed across the board because English and Hindi are also used as a medium of instruction as it is difficult for non indigenes to follow the lessons.
The more you quote India the more you expose your level of ignorance because Nigeria has never been on the same linguistic wavelenght.

Hypocrites everywhere. grin

Prof. Ihechukwu Madubuike, Director, Igbo Renaissance at the Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), Abia, said on Saturday that the university would soon introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory course in the second year.

Mr. Madubuike announced this at Uturu during the 6th edition of the Igbo (Uturu) Cultural Carnival, which held at the university.

"By the next two years, the university plans to introduce the Igbo language as a compulsory subject for all students in the second year.

"Whether you are Yoruba, Hausa or Efik, you must take Igbo as a compulsory subject, in spite of your area of specialisation," he said.

Mr. Madubuike described the Igbo language as the "soul of the culture of Ndigbo," adding that the disappearance of the language would mean the ultimate death of the culture.

Earlier, the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra state, Laz Ekwueme, called for concerted efforts by people of the South-East to save the Igbo language from going extinct.

Mr. Ekwueme, who was the chairman of the carnival, expressed regret that the Igbo language was under serious threat, due to the decline in its usage as a means of communication in various families.

He noted that many families of Igbo origin preferred to communicate in foreign languages, especially the English language, with their children.

"More often, nowadays, you find many parents communicating with their children and relations in the English language, rather than the Igbo language," he said.

Mr. Ekwueme regretted that the development was capable of endangering the Igbo language, if not promptly checked.

The monarch, who was a former Minister of Education, commended the Chancellor of the University, Dr. Greg Ibe, for initiating the carnival.

"Anything that is done to encourage the sustenance of the Igbo language and culture would be encouraged," he said.

Mr. Ekwueme noted that the event would add value to similar efforts designed to re-establish and reinforce the Igbo culture.

It will be recalled that Mr. Peter Obi during the launch of Subawa Igbo initiative at the Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State introduced  far-reaching measures to revive Igbo language and culture.  Part of the measure was the annual cash award of N250, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000 to the best three Igbo language students in secondary schools in Nigeria.

Mr Obi. also gave cash donations as well as university scholarship to the best two Igbo language students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Messrs Kevin Anozie and Chika Echeta, of Holy Child Secondary School, Isuofia and Bishop Onyemelukwe Secondary School, Onitsha, respectively. Before now, the former governor had signed into law a bill to enforce the speaking and writing of Igbo language among Ndigbo in Anambra and Diaspora, and also stopped meting of corporal punishment to students who speak Igbo in schools in the state.

Like English Language and Mathematics, Mr. Obi’s strive to make  Igbo Language  compulsory in all educational institutions in the state, and also sent a bill to that effect to the State House of Assembly as well as making a pass in Igbo Language mandatory for employment in the state. To sustain the renewed interest in Igbo studies, the state government has commenced the building of Chief Chidozie Ogbalu Igbo Language School at a cost of N50.5 million for specialized and holiday programmes in Igbo.

Notable Igbo groups such as Igbo World Union  (IWU) have been emphasising the need for  Igbos to exert efforts in reviving Igbo Language  and its earlier cultural activities. The group is also harping on  the need for Igbos at home and those in Diaspora, especially    parents to cultivate the habit of  inculcating in their children Igbo culture and tradition. The group has also succeeded in setting up an Igbo school in  South Africa, France, Spain and United States.

Despite the above efforts, much needs to be done to forestall Igbo language and culture going extinct. This is because, to the average Igbo, it has become more fashionable to speak English and other languages except Igbo.

It is also regrettable that most Igbo hold their town union meetings in English. Government business in Igbo states is entirely conducted in English. This attitude is not only pathetic but  funny attitude and must change before Igbo language regains its lost glory.

While we commend Mr. Peter  Obi for his foresight in introducing the far- reaching measures to revive the Igbo language and culture, we appeal to Igbo speaking states governors measures to revive Igbo language  to use these now that the language is among those predicted to go extinct in the near future if nothing drastic is done to promote its usage.Huge funds should be made available to encourage people to study and research in Igbo and give incentives for teachers to specialise in Igbo.

All the government’s cultural agencies in the Igbo speaking states should be involved in the promotion of Igbo language. Why can’t we use the local languages in our state legislative houses like Lagos State House of Assembly now conducts its business once a week in Yoruba?

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the bill which makes the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory in schools in the state into law.

The passage of the bill was sequel to the bill successfully scaling through the third reading on the floor of the House.

The bill, among others, makes the teaching of Yoruba language compulsory in all schools in the state, both in private and public schools, by including it as a core subject at all levels.

State-owned tertiary institutions are also mandated by it to incorporate the use of the language as a course unit into their General Nigeria Studies (GNS).

The bill indicates a fine of N500,000 for a corporate offender while any shool in the state which fails to comply with the law faces closure and a fine of N250,000.

The bill was finally passed on Thursday with the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, ordering the Clerk of the House, Mr Azeez Sanni, to send a clean draft copy of the bill to the state Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for his assent.

This will make land grabbers to steer clear

We have been developing our land ourselves and in our own way

We don't need the developers

But when they say they want to go to Biafra, so that you can use your language as you wish,

you will say no. What exactly do you want from these people.

They can equally pass their own law that any body who work in the oil company must speak language

indigenous to the state and must reside there. Don't start what you don't know how it will end.

I have followed this discussion keenly and let me add my comments.
1) The Yoruba language bill is meant to promote the Yoruba heritage of the State.

2) Leaning (especially by adults) CAN'T be enforced, it has to be willingly. You can attend Yoruba classes and still not learn the language if you are not interested.

3) Nigeria can truly develop and be great if we promote and develop with our indigenous languages,so I am proposing adoption of several indigenous languages as official languages in addition to English language.

4) Those who don't like the law can seek redress by seeking judicial nullification of the law if they feel it is unconstitutional.

KemjikaEme:

The ethnicites in my state are not under any compulsion to learn the language of the state. It is absurd to compel minorities to learn your language in schools. Is this compulsion applied solely to students of yoruba heritage or the entire students residing in Lagos?
Argue along rational lines like an educated person for pete's sake.
