Unemployment is not limited to biochemistry and microbiology graduates, the most important thing is to graduate and pay more attention to entrepreneurship because life is all about making money.

Don't always bear in mind of looking for a job after graduation. Always try to dream of creating the job for others in the area of life you truly have the passion for.

You're correct that a good microbiologist has to be good in biochem and visa versa but the concept taught in the two fields are different.... so we can't use that to say they are one and the same. In U.S there is no standalone Biochem department. Biochem falls under Chemistry and under the American Chemistry Society. The exception is at doctorate level where Biochem can stand alone as PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. So, Biochem leans more towards Chemistry and its main concept differs from that of Micro.

Good that you know me but where?

I wanna know too! Did you figure out where he knows you from?

What do you guys have to say about Anatomy and physiology? Is there any place they can boldly apply to work professionally?
Where does a microbiologist really work? Water board? But go to NAFDAC, bulk of their staff their are biochemist and pharmacist. The problem is just job scarcity. The ratio of Job opportunities to number of biochemistry graduate is low. Biochemist can also work at industries.
But personally I believe at this age and time, one should focus more on entrepreneurship rather than job seeking. Demand for job is more than supply in the whole country. It is even worse for those who study physic, chemistry, maths, biology, zoology, political science, sociology e.t.c.
Even pharmacy we see as lucrative, haven't you seen jobless pharmacist? How many Job opportunities are opened for a pharmacist? How many drug producing companies do you know? And how many drug dispensing centers have you seen vacancy in front of their gate? You see 'Job security' is an illusion. it doesn't exist. Create a Job from what you studying. In Biochemistry, you can make lot of money from parasitology research, Nutrition research and studying alloxan with respect to diabetes. These are not jobs. They are opportunities!!
Can you shed more light on parasitology research.. I would love to have a chat with you if you don't mind.

Let me advise you candidly. If you're studying a course, do not do it with the aim of getting a salaried job. Do it for knowledge. I'm a graduate of Physiology which is in the same Faculty as Biochemistry. I'm offering my services on Fiverr as a Medical Researcher & Health/fitness & Nutrition writer. I don't regret it. The knowledge has helped and I plan going back for an MSc once the strike is called off. Use your head oga.

Please I would like you to mentor me on how I can explore the opportunities on FEVERR. I'm also a graduate of Physiology, please help a brother. Thanks sir!

Hmn, many depressing comments above....at least a reasonable mind should at least know it is worthy of note to be neutral and encouraging in giving any related comments as to not to derail or discourage those already studying or plan on studying the courses...never use your incapability to make a judgmental comment on a particular view.

Do you know many students in this country who already studied and are still studying these courses?? it is better to keep mute that voice out mind breaking suggestions or what do you want those already in 200l and above to do??

This may be beneficial, follow your passion and any course circumstances bring along your way take it, study it, and give your total best...aim for FIRSTCLASS IF POSSIBLE.

The problem comes from people taking any course circumstances bring their way! That's a very wrong advice!

People should study courses that can prepare them well for a clearly defined career path. Fewer people should study some courses, especially those in the pure sciences and some arts. Those pure sciences should be reserved for those who are really passionate about them and who applied for them as first choice. The fewer they are the better they'll be trained for research and academics.

Universities should stop offering admission to students into courses they never applied for. Many students would jump at such offers due to desperation.

If you're choosing microbiology, prepare your mind on time to return to school after first degree to pursue your MSc and PhD. Else, reject the admission, write JAMB again and choose a course with a clear career path.

As far as I'm concerned, it is better to learn a trade or skilled work instead of studying microbiology, biochemistry and the likes and stopping only at BSc level. Those guys end up constituting a nuisance to other people's professions by trying to do works they were never trained for eg fake pharmaceutical Reps with zero knowledge of drugs being USED by fake pharmaceutical companies. I know because I was there!
