Anglican Primate, Okoh speaks on tithe controversy

The Primate, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, His Grace, Nicholas Okoh has spoken on the issue of preaching and collection of tithe by pastors.

The issue of tithing has generated a lot of controversy in recent days, geared by a controversial CoolFM On Air Personality, OAP, Daddy Freeze.

Primate Okoh, who spoke with select journalists in Abuja on the subject, said payment of tithe was not by force, adding failure to pay doesn’t bring about curse.

He explained, “Tithing is a very ancient tradition, Abraham paid tithe to Melchizedek and people have become transfixed to that idea till today, but in the New Testament, giving modalities have other options.

“One, it says, set aside something every week which you think would be handsome for the glory of God and give that. Whether that is 10 per cent or whatever per cent, I don’t know, but the instruction is, set aside something every week.

“Then, there is the gift required to give by all; the first concept is that your life is a living sacrifice. A sacrifice is something you offer and withdraw your hand, that means the Christian offers his life totally and the totality of his training, his money and everything he has belonged to God.

“Therefore, the question of saying, ‘God take 10 per cent, I would keep 90 per cent’ does not arise. Let me give an example: If you are a tither and you give 10 per cent to the Church, and after giving this percentage, somebody is very sick, and you still have your 90 per cent, will you close your eyes to the person’s need?

“You see, that is one of the weaknesses of tithing if you follow it mechanically. Then furthermore, in John chapter 6, Jesus asked people who had food to bring it, but only one young boy who had a lunch pack–two pieces of fish and five barley loaves, offered his.

“The mother gave him to eat as he was going about with Jesus so he would not be hungry. When Jesus asked for the bread, it was not only that boy that had, many had and did not bring, but the boy brought his own, he did not give Jesus two pieces of fish and keep the rest, he did not give the barley loaves and keep the fish, he gave everything and because he gave everything, the blessing of God multiplied it over and over.

“So the intention of the mother was met, the boy had enough to eat, other people who were there, almost 20,000 had enough to eat and to spare. Now, those who had and did not bring, their own became a waste. So, the point in this matter is that, when God is asking for something, you don’t give him 10 per cent.

“You give him what is worthy of his name: it might be more than 10 per cent, it might be 10 per cent, it might be anything depending on the situation he has placed you bearing in mind that every good and perfect gift comes from above.”

On the stand of some pastors that anyone who refused to pay tithe was under a divine curse, he said, “no , I don’t believe it, I don ’t curse anybody, God does not compel us to go, he only makes us willing to go. If God has given you a gift, he woos your mind, he makes you to see why. Remember that the gift you gave does not promote God.

“He is not a young officer that would be promoted a senior officer or to an executive by your gift. God is full, according to the theology of Colossians, God is full, complete.

“When you give, it is you the giver that is blessed. The person giving is the one lifted up, God is not hungr . According to Psalm 50, he said if I were hungry for meat, I won’t tell you, the whole cattle on a thousand hills belonged to me.”

sad The tithe of Abraham was different. Deuteronomy 14 gave specific instructions on tithing. No addition or subtraction is required.

The primate is either pussyfooting or just ignorant.
Folks shouldn't tithe.
Tithing will only deplete your income and make another richer.

A man who pays tithes is the same as a man who burns down his own house on a cold day for it to generate warmth for him.

Why do people have problems accepting this truth that payment of monetary tithes and offerings is unbiblical and exploitative?

The Bible is perspicuous about tithing.
(Deuteronomy 14 : 22-27)

But just like Galileo said;
“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered. The point is to discover them.”

Adeboye and oyedipo when it comes to this issue are criminals

The drive private jets, expensive cars, build schools and acquire properties in their own name, fix their children in strategic church positions(family business) and they tell you to save for the heavenly treasures while they enjoy the ones on earth.
The go about telling people to pay tithe and that if you don't pay you cursed, regardless of how you make your money.

Those criminals will not make heaven from stealing from the masses, using God name to rob the poor. My friend worked to build the schools owned by oyedipo, carried sand and worked for the school, today he can't pay the fees for his son to attend such school. What is the essence of the church?

I have found extensive discussion in the public space on this matter needless. It is a calculated diversion from the pit of hell to distract attention from the Good News that JESUS died and rose again and is at the right hand of God interceding for as many who will believe in Him for salvation from eternal damnation in hell with the devil.
The Bible in Malachi 3 is clear on tithing. Anyone who has problems with that is taking analgesic for another’s headache since tithe is commanded for Christians and not folks who do not believe in Christ.
What should be the preoccupation of Christians and Pastors is to let all know JESUS saves and that heaven and hell are real! Why is the message of salvation and holiness not trending instead?

He wasn't like the others but he wasn't straight forward either. I was expecting him to be anti or pro tithe but he just sat on the fence

Unlike some who are trying to "create a balance" the bible is very clear on its stance. Tithe is done and dusted. We should give to the NEEDY CHEERFULLY and not to one ministry we are not sure of

Next year February Nigeria will be the country with the highest numbers of POOREST people in the world and for the past weeks all this men can talk about is tithe? Freeze has been talking about corruption, the state of our roads, poor health facilities and poverty but all you pastors can talk about is tithe?!?!?!

Nigerians this is a wake up call. We've tried their false promises of "God will fight for you " nothing is happening. Let's take our country back and make it what we want.

Your pastors are in bed with politicians.

the law of tithe was noit given in Malachi rather in Deuteronomy which was as explicit as ever.Enough of this malachi gibberish. Its stale now. This tithe will trend until most people are freed from shackles laid on them by false prophets masquerading as pastors.Another reformation is brewing in the church

And tithing keeps receiving a pummeling.

The day I knew God was going to soon start punishing these Nigerian pastors because of the tithes they forcefully collect by spiritual racketeering was the day I started noticing pastors enacting laws in their churches that made it mandatory for people to pay their tithe before they can be joined in marriage or they can be buried by the church.
One particularly gluttonous pastor in Benin said he must see the tithe card of anyone who wants to do anything in the church or he will forbid members of the church from attending.

The free grace was obviously now for sale. God bless Freeze.

Tithing is not by force. If don't believe in tithing, don't tithe. What you believe is what works for you. You are ruled by your belief system.

I believe in tithing because it works for me.
