Great concept @Cjrane,

Owerri can't survive without a real industrial base. I have been playing with this concept for a while. If the eastern people know anything about themselves it's the fact that we can take an ordinarily complex idea, simplify and make it accessible to the average person. We did this with movie production, international trading, crafts like in Aba, and we can do the same for manufacturing.

If the state laying out 2000 tiny factories, it would spark a revolution. Each factory doesn't have to be bigger than one or two shipping containers.

And the government can charge the cost of the shipping containers for people to own or rent them. Then next to the industrial zone where they will be clustered will be a large warehouse or two.

The gov can allow international industrial machine producing companies to rent ground space in the ware houses and sell their industrial machines to the manufactures in the containers. I can be screen printing machines, printers, CNC machines, medical pill presses, electric sewing, iron cutting devices, diamond refining devices etc etc.

the manufactures can buy the machines from the warehouses, stock up their container and have a simple, easy and profitable instant factory in a matter of days

If one container producers the legs for a chain, the other the cushion, the other does the paint and finish, then you can have collaborations pumping out industrial volume chains. If one makes ceramic plates, another paints them there's another product set. If one makes plastic bottles, the other fills them with mineral, another puts the label on them, imagine. You'll create a hyper productive industrial heartland in a simple and affordable way. The government can easily built 50,000-100,000 of these containers in the area you designated alone.

As time goes, successful container owners will buy more containers to increase output. Traders in places like Alaba will buy containers and begin manufacturing their goods since it's cheaper than importing.

The problem with industrialization is we think we need to build massive factories and focus on employment. Really we need small factories geared towards ownership. In a matter of months every market in the zoo with be filled to the brim with Imo products. Why import consumer goods when they're coming out of Owerri-Orlu-Okigwe at an insane volume

Excellent idea Bro !
I wish Rochas can see this. But the funny thing is that Nigerian politicians rarely want to give you anything good that will help you escape poverty and not needing their handouts. So, hopefully, a sharp business man can see the cost of these containers may be much less than a formal shop and it's fire proof.

If only Rochas can stop buying people those old passat cars and invest in something like this that will grow the industrial base of the state and create sustainable employment.
Artisans can be given these container shops to produce shoes, slippers, handbags, make traditional dresses, women's hats, arts and craft, painted art work or sculptures, polythene bags, toilet rolls etc. These things can give people a true job to feed their families instead of a used car that earns you N5,000 naira today, then breaks down tomorrow and cost N15,000 to repair.

Interesting...
let's refine this idea.

First off there's the issue of power: Using generators would pollute the atmosphere and there's also the cost of the gas.
I propose the use of generators for a while until the state government finishes the building of a power plant that would serve that area
The government could also sell subsidized fuel for generators at those warehouses you mentioned

There's also the issue of infrastructure and environment
Take for instance the example of Aba. Roads are bad there and the environment is dirty. It's hard to transport products on bad roads. Also a
bad environment drives off potential customers and investors.

The state government should build quality roads( I recommend concrete) that are regularly maintained in that area. And the government shouldn't build open gutters!

There should also be a policy there where trash is not tolerated. Big garbage bins should be provided and these bins must be cleaned out daily. Owerri is the capital of Imo and should have a sense of decency at least to outsiders which include investors.

Also this sector must be regulated and must become formal. We don't want an issue of fake products that blatantly copy the original like in Aba.
We also don't want an issue wherein people produce medicines and sell not being certified with their medicines being fake. And so on...

Now considering the issue of these businesses to be formal:

These business must be registered(to stem illegal production as well as to keep track of the development of the area) but perhaps a little time after the place has developed. I've heard it takes time to register a company in Nigeria.

These businesses must be taxed but there should be at least a a 3-year tax relief scheme to allow the place to grow. Tax is good for generating the income of the state making the state richer.

Any other suggestions?

Nice idea but there is no electricity to power the industries. The cost of doing business in this country is very high. Imported products are still way cheaper. Without constant and affordable electricity, Nigeria is doomed. Sorry my friend but your ideas are merely a dream.

Oga didn't you see where he mentioned the gas power plant at Ohaji/Egbema and it would be utilized for the project? His ideas are not merely a dream, they are realistic and attainable. Change your pessimistic attitude, it would do you no good.

The only major draw back would be the finance, but that itself wouldn't be much of an issue as we can borrow or make it a long term plan using our own available funds to sponsor it. Public-private partnership is another effective (or most effective) avenue to exploit.

you're right, but there would have to be stations that produce power. Perhaps a block of 100 share a single power source. To build a plant to power all of them is above this country's capabilities, but small easy to manage bulk stations, no issue.

Listen good sir, Okorocha is not interested in all these. No Nigerian politician is interested in any of these suggestions.

Your ideas are good but I will like you to start up a company in Nigeria to know how hard it is for businesses to survive in Nigeria.

Nigeria without electricity is doomed. For your information the Egbema gas power plant is a hoax. Nothing real has been put in place there.

Agreed. But next guber election, Owerri shall vote even a goat from Owerri before any candidate supported by Owelle.

Owerri duped Owelle big time by asking him to "build us a befitting state capital like Dubai in Africa before attending to other areas of Imo state". Owelle the most apolitical agreed. Now he is like a political orphan in Imo state.

Industrial layout part II

So the issue of electricity has been brought up, and I started thinking of how the problem can be solved. Then the solution fell on my lap. The #1 commodity that will be in demand in this system is power.

So then, why not manufacture it?

If I buy one container sized factory. And will it with 4-6 industrial scale diesel generators. Then charged other container-factory owners to have power from the beginning of the work day till the end non-stop, I will be rich. There for the fix to the electric plan is to stop treating electricity as a government project and more as a business. Allow container owners to also manufacture and sell power to other container owners out of their containers.

The chinese on several occasions have turned entire containers into generators

This non-Igbo man still de leave the impression that Owerri is Imo state.

A state was created for uniform development of the state.
It's illegal for a state governor to concentrate his development efforts only in the state capital, while other parts of the state decay - as in Imo state of Okorocha.
Rome Empire uniformly built other Roman cities' infrastructures the same time Rome was being built.

Una attended Almajiri school in your north, but come to Imo state to promote Apartheid governance system - politically and economically over-empower the land owners and indegene from the state capital, but impoverish people in the other areas of the state outside Owerri.
You have nobody to educate you on the EVILS OF APARTHEID SYSTEM.
