AbujaNIV/LagosNIV. I would like your opinion on this.

I came in on F1 visa and resumed school this fall, but I want to stop and resume elsewhere fall 2018

I intend going back to Nigeria this Christmas but a bit uncertain on what to do for 8 whole months before next fall session. You know I already resigned from my job when I left Nigeria. Is it okay to stay back in US and do an internship for 6 months and then go back for the visa process? Do I need a j1 visa?

My current f1 visa expires May 2019, do I need to go through the visa application process again if I am resuming in another school?. I am not transferring this semester grades to the new school, it will be a fresh start for a different program. Please tell me what the process is, I do not in any way want to break immigration rules. I came in for study in a top school but have to go for a different program

Hello Lilyroad. We don't discuss chances on this forum--the US visa process is not a form of gambling.

Lilyroad:
Hello!

I have a job and family resources however I used my friend in the US (same state as my school) as my sponsor due to ease of access to her bank statements when I applies.... I do have a few relatives including a brother in Boston but he's paying off loans and can't be a sponsor.

Pls does have a US citizen as a sole sponsor reduce my chances for F1?

Hello, please I would like your opinion on my case.
I am thinking of completing the semester but then I will be paying for what I wouldn't use. Can I apply for a J1 visa for spring internship, with my current f1? Also when fall 2018 comes, how do I go about my f1 visa while in the US?

If you are not enrolled in school, you can not remain in the US on a student visa. It doesn't matter what expiration date is printed on your visa. If you remain in the US when not enrolled or if your school has halted your SEVIS status, you can accrue illegal presence. This can lead to deportation and travel bans.

Thank you for the feedback. I understand that part and I do not want to remain illegally in the US. I am asking the possibility of switching to a J1 and do an internship at least to stay engaged and gain something before next fall. Getting a job or internship in Nig isnt easy, I dont want to waste 6 months doing nothing.

Please let me know what the rules are in this instance. F1 - J1 and back to F1 in August.

hello VO

Morning I would love to ask this question which has been bothering me since my last visa denier at the embassy I previously applied for a Vocational training programme with M1 visa status but was denied and have decided to change school which is now F1 but I request for transfer of Sevis fee by HMS I was told I have to pay another Sevis fee because they are 2 visa categories.

But the question I want to ask here is why the interview so short because a friend of mine in south africa that applied said he spent 15 mins with the VO over there during the course of the interview and was issued a visa

Hello Havre -

What you are considering is technically possible, though difficult. You will need to be accepted to a J1 program and then apply for a J1 visa, which can only be done at a US Embassy or Consulate outside the US. For more information about J1 visas please review https://travel.state.gov/content/visas/en/study-exchange/exchange.html I hope this helps.

LagosNIV/AbujaNIV, which visa category will a prospective MSc student apply for?
Re: U.S. Student Visa (F1, M1, & J1) Forum - We're Listening by Nobody: 9:54pm On Nov 24, 2017
Hello Unlimited 22 -

The vast majority of MSc students should apply for a F1 visa. F1 visas are for students enrolled in academic programs. M1 visas are for students enrolled in vocational programs, such as flight school or welding schools. Some MSc students may qualify for a J1 visa, if they are accepted into a qualifying exchange program.

Hello abujaniv, LagosNIV,

I have a question for my friend please. She applied to a University for Fall 2017, the admission was given, I-20 sent and SEVIS number issued but she wasn't able to meet up with the school's admission date although she has already gotten visa. The University advised she reapplies for Spring term which she has done already. But now, they are issuing a new I-20 with a new SEVIS number different from the one on her visa.

Can she travel to USA with the visa that bears the old SEVIS number or she has to go back to the embassy to rectify it?

Hello Amicable24 -

The SEVIS number annotation on the visa will be checked against the number on the I-20. Your friend will need to obtain a new visa.

Please will she go for an interview again or will it be a drop box?

Hello Amicable24 -

Your friend could probably do it either way. F1 visas are eligible to submit for renewal through the drobpox if they are still valid or have been expired for no more than 1 year, and if the student either continuing in the same course of study even if at a different institution, or to attend the same instutution, even if pursuing a different course of study.

I am trying to schedule a regular interview for an F1 visa but the portal is not bringing out the calender like image from where I can select a date from the options. Please how many days does it take to after payment of visa fee before scheduling appointment for a regular visa interview.

I would suggest calling the customer service line for CGI. From what I have heard, it is very fast, 30 minutes or less.

Hello,

Great work you are doing here.

I have an admission in USA and I was issued funding when I transferred to my new dept, due to fact that my first dept didn't give me funding and time is not on my side, the funding didn't show on my I20.
The dept already promised to send a letter to back it up at the embassy, can I use this letter at the embassy?

Thanks

Hello aanexplus -

The best course of action is to have your school update your electronic I-20 record. We have access to that in our systems and can verify the funding this way.

Hello oluwadamilare26 -

I hope there won't be any problem as well. If you are asking me to comment on your chances, we do not comment on chances on Nairaland.
The qualifications are the same for first time students as they are for students in your situation. You must demonstrate (1) that you have a residence abroad which you do not intend to abandon (2) that you have been accepted to an accademic program (3) that you are qualified/prepared for that program, and (4) that you have the ability to pay for the program.
