Hi,

I am still an Affiliate of ACCA, passed exams in Aug 2015 so i have till Aug 2018 before I can become a full member ( 3 years).

Right now ACCA has delisted me as I didn't pay subscription this year. I intend paying next year to coincide with my full membership status.

My AOR is dec4, what do you advise I do? Should I wait till i land in canada before beginning the conversion process or can an afilliate status suffice?

From the little i know, one has to be a full ACCA member to benefit from the conversion to CPA.

Well, first and foremost, you are meant to be a full member of ACCA. That's the whole point. Have you considered using your NysC as experience? If that's not possible, you have to wait till you arrive in Canada. The challenge with that is that the MRA is yet to be renewed for a defined term, eg 5 years, and therefore could be terminated anytime. So even folks like me that may not travel for another year are taking advantage.
On a different note, hope you are aware you would need to pay up all outstanding dues with ACCA before they would write to CGA about your current standing.

A major advantage for you is that you have your wes report so CPA does not have to evaluate your degree afresh. Just provide them with the Wes report. This part causes a lot of delays but you are definitely past that.

Ultimately, the earlier the better.

Good luck.

Hey team ACCA. I sent my transcripts and all documents to CPA-BC and I haven't heard from them. I have mailed and mailed and no response. A friend that did the conversion said it can be a long wait with silence so I intend to call them today to know what's up.

Where are you looking at settling though? Calgary is calling my name

Those guys reply emails after 10 working days. I even traced my evaluator on LinkedIn and connected just to see if communication can be faster. No way! It still takes her 10 days to reply via email and nothing on LinkedIn. It's crazy but you just have to get used to it. Send some more emails, make calls if u can. Just be on their case till you get ur CPA.

Goodluck

@Ayoboy1

Using the insurance companies here will be expensive for an immigrant especially considering the issue of lack of credit history when it comes to pricing. This tends to make the premiums quoted on the high side and for someone converting dollars to naira, you need all the savings you can find. This is why I mentioned reputable Nigerian insurance companies as I personally had good experiences with them before I left Nigeria but please go for what gives you comfort at the end of it all. Some Canadian companies you can Google in Ontario include Ontario Blue Cross, CAA Travel Insurance, Allianz and Sun Life which I currently use here through my employer.

Good day my people.

I am having a mixed feeling right now.

I landed on the 5th December in Canada. Glory be to God.

I am having a serious challenge. I am putting it here to get your advice and also so that others may learn.

During landing formalities at the Border Agency, I signed both copies of my COPR and the officer handed back to me my passport without giving back my copy of the COPR.

Now, I can't process my SIN because I need a copy of the COPR for it. I was told to go back to the airport when I got to Service Canada office to process the SIN. I went back to the airport and went to the CBSA office to lodge my complaint. I was told there is nothing they could do as the documents have been signed and it has been transferred to IRCC. I was then advise to file a Replacement of Document for my COPR at IRCC.
The greatest blow here is that the average waiting period for this application is 30 days.

The implications include inability to work and getting a phone.

I would appreciate your guidance.

Good day Seniors in the House,

I have a question. When exactly can you claim points for a sibling living in Canada.

- So if a sibling is just leaving Nigeria for Canada, is it immediately after he/she lands or the sibling has to get his/her PR card first and get settled?(I hear this can take over a month).
- Can you claim points as soon as sibling lands in Canada?

Considering you have to show evidence of their status and relationship with you

1) Canadian Status of the sibling: Can one present a stamped copy of the sibling's passport?
2) Proof of PR/Citizenship Status: Can a passport also be submitted as evidence?
3) Residence in Canada: How soon can one get utility bills to show this, bank statements, phone bill etc?
4) Relationship between you and the sibling: This is straight forward, birth certificate, passports etc.

Thanks

Landing Tori
Got to MMA around 10am Tue 4th Dec.
Carrier : Ethiopian Airways.
Had 6 bags (check in) and 3 carry ons, 2 laptop bags. Home measured weights WRONG so we racked off extra 28kg which we had to 'settle' $100 for (the attendant said the rate $260 for 23kg) but the carry ons were ok once they were under 10kg.
Our beloved immigration in Lagos have a way of separating the 'daddy' from the family to 'shake body'. I kept on telling them its not Christmas yet .
Elderly people and families with kids were given preference to board first @ MMA and Addis Ababa.
Wifi was poor as expected at ADD, but instagram, FB chat were enough to connect/update family on movt. Flight from Addis Ababa to Dublin (fuel stop and cabin crew change) then YYZ was smooth, food was ok except for the 'rice' monotony.
Landed at YYZ on Dec 5 around 8.10am (wet and cold)
Quite a lengthy walk to immigration, was asked for details indicated on the declaration form (given onboard) about food and how much i am bringing to Canada, and i responded telling them how much i had in cash over 10,000CAD, the lady says fine and doesnt bug me about the 'balance amount' for POF, she signs the COPRs and takes a copy. She asks about my Canadian address and phone no and briefs me about the waiting period for the PR and health card.

Next we proceed for SIN, then retrieve baggage (porters offer to help out at a price when you have bags larger than the size the smaller free trolleys can contain) before approaching Customs.

Lady asks if i have food, i say pepper only (last minute acquisition) and I tell her i have cargoed some food items. Then she asks for goods accompanying and to follow. She asks if i am a chef or something cos of the value indicated on food items in 'goods to follow', she records the serial nos of my laptops and IPad and gives me a small green card(proof i exported them ). She asks me to add a price of the laptops/iPad to that of 'goods accompanying'.
She stamps/signs "goods to follow" sheet, taps her computer, opens a file with my docs and hands back my docs/passports to me and says 'WELCOME to Canada'. She escorts us to the exit door and wishes us well.

Just apply for the replacement document, before you know it, the 30 days would have elapsed.

I landed in September at Montreal with my final destination as Ottawa but I was cleared at Montreal so instead of waiting 10 hrs for the flight to Ottawa, I decided to take bus which is two hours.
Unlike you, I had a copy of my COPR, but the immigration officer didn't check me into the system and I didn't know until I went to get my SIN, which meant my SIN had to be processed manually (6 weeks average time).
I had to call IRCC and I was told to wait for a week then call back back. After a week I called and they sent a message to the immigration officer at Montreal to check me into the system.

I know our cases are different but I want you to know some of us also faced some challenges and you will overcome this in no time.

Just use this waiting period to apply for jobs in your field. If you need to make money urgently, try Kijiji and Craigslist for jobs that pay in cash.

I don't know why you can't get a phone/Sim but you can try apps that give you Canadian numbers for now.

Pardon my late response to your PM. On this issue, it could be real painful to go through but please have patience and follow up with phone calls. They may process it faster so in the meantime see what you can do per job search, reaching out to recruiters and attending an immigrant training/bridging program. Just find ways to help you pass the time. For the phone, not all carriers need to see your SIN so find one who will issue you a line to use with your phone from Nigeria so you just get a simple pay per use line and not a contract. When the SIN issue is sorted out, you can move to any other desirable carrier with the same phone line by just porting. Be encouraged, you are a PR now smiley

Though I am still on the PR process. Around July, I initiated and got approval from CPA Ontario for the Internationally Trained Accountant (ITA) route after about some 8 weeks using my ICAN- ACA status.

I got ICAN to give me my ATS and ACA transcripts, Letter of Good Standing, I packaged my MBA transcript, filled the relevant CPA forms and the painful part grin, I had to part with 480 CAD processing fee and DHL courier fees (man eye don see enuf in this PR hustle grin grin). I spent almost 250k all in all (including ICAN fees and outstanding ICAN-ATS dues)

The sorry part now is that when my approval came from CPA Ontario, they said, quoting their mail:

"Your application to register as a student under Accounting Body Outside Canada has been approved. You will be receiving a student confirmation letter once available, however below lists your admission to membership requirements:

- Challenge the examinations of Core 1 and Core 2 Modules;

- Challenge the examinations of two Elective Modules;

- Capstone 1 module;

- Capstone 2 module;

- Common Final Exam (CFE);

- Prescribed Practical Experience (PPE)

Can you imagine, cry cry after almost 10 years of ACA status and finance work, I will have to write THAT MUCH as above.

(But from what I have been reading here, it seems something is not right about the number of papers I was approved to take (as an Internationally Trained Accountant); It is quite much as if I'm starting from the scratch! grin

To even think I may not been landing in Ontario as I had earlier planned as a FSW is now throwing another curve ball into an already complex matter (I feel like knocking myself, the whole fees and costs)

I'm currently going through as a Sask PNP and I thought of transferring my CPA Ontario application file to CPA Saskatchewan but CPA Sask said I will have to pay all the fees with them all over too. grin grin I don seeee weeenn!

I'm about to withdraw my studentship now as I cant keep paying 600 CAD annual studentship dues when I have not even landed. They ve even sent me a mail (of course bulk mail) whether I want to avail myself of an "early bird" subscription payment for 2018 grin grin 600 CAD for 2018!

@all my brodas and sistas, abeg, see me see matter needing multiple analysis here o! kindly weigh in! grin

- Should I withdraw my studentship? (i may still come to work in Ontario years later)
- Are the papers approved for me to write in order as an ACA?
-Can I write CPA Ontario to pause my studentship pending when I land as PR to Canada and start earning CAD?

It will surely all end in praise IJN!!

This is one of the most painful comments I've ever read here, I read on the sister thread that WES Canada is no longer evaluating ICAN positively, now this!! It is not almost o, you are starting from scratch and that hurts. I really hope there is a mixup somewhere because I have read of people with ICAN who only had to start from the Capstone 1 module, which is fair IMO. Experienced folks should please weigh in.

@TEECANN, Pele. I almost went the same route but decided at the last moment to wait until I buy my flight ticket and know for sure which province I will land.

The way it is going, I might switch to Alberta for at least a yr. The stages are too many jor. A friend told me that if your ICAN exams were over 10 years ago that we would have to almost start over.

Someone was even told to go back to bridging school before they start the whole exam process.
