leaved stinger,” or the “moonlighter,” the “suicide plant” is

It is a single stemmed plant that can reach a height of one to three meters with large heart-shaped leaves and fine silica-tipped hairs on its surface. These hairs contain a very potent neurotoxin and can penetrate the skin when touched.






It is the most toxic of the stinging tree species in Australia. Its sting is extremely painful and can last for days to years. The best way to treat the sting is to apply diluted (1:10) hydrochloric acid and remove the hairs from the skin using hair-removing strips without breaking the hair.





Duct tape and tweezers can also be used as long as it’s done carefully because broken tips increase the level of pain.

In 2011, scientists found 2,368 species of bacteria that live in the belly button, 1,458 of which are new to science.





A team from the North Carolina State University collected
swabs from the belly buttons of 60 volunteers after an
undergraduate student had an idea of sampling a colleague’s
bacteria for a holiday card for fun. What they found was quite surprising.




Each swab was unique. While some had as few as 29 species, some had 107,and most had around 67. The total
number of species from the 60 swabs was a whopping 2,368. Around 92 percent of the species were found only in 10 percent of the swabs, and most of the time, they appeared only in a single swab. No single species was found in all the swabs, while eight species were found in 70 percent of them.



The swab from one volunteer had bacteria that was found only in Japanese soil though he had never been to Japan. Another had two species of extremophile bacteria which are found in polar ice caps and volcanoes.

Ravens can spot a cheater. They work together to gain equal amounts of food. But if they see another raven taking more than its fair share, they immediately lose trust and never cooperate in future with the cheater.





Ravens have displayed complex cooperative abilities that were previously only seen in a handful of mammalian species. However, collaborations only succeed if only both the ravens trust each other.




Ravens that have misbehaved by taking more than their fair share are subsequently shunned. These results were part of an experiment carried out by Dr. Jorg Massen of the University of Vienna.



He tested whether pairs of ravens could cooperate for food. He witnessed 66.2% success in which both the ravens worked together to score and share the food. Moreover, he noticed how ravens treated other ravens who were not trustworthy. When food was placed in between so that each bird could get one piece, sometimes a fast-moving bird would eat both pieces before the other could get its share.
Birds that had been on the receiving end of such bad behavior refused to cooperate with the offender again.





Moreover, it’s not just about not trusting a cheater. Ravens
empathize with each other too. In many cases, researchers
have noticed that if a raven loses a fight, then fellow ravens
approach the victim and appear to console it.

There is a parasite that servers and replaces the tongue of a fish. It then becomes a fully functioning, parasitic, but otherwise harmless tongue for the rest of the fish’s life.






The parasite Cymothoa exigua, also known as the “tongue-
eating louse,” enters the fish through its gills. The female then attaches itself to the tongue while the male attaches itself behind and beneath the female on the gill arches. It then cutsoff the blood supply by severing the blood vessels. Thiscauses the tongue to fall off after which the parasite attachesitself to the remaining stub of the tongue.








The parasites feed either on the fish’s blood or on its mucus. After the fish’s death, the parasite detaches itself from the mouth, leaves the mouth cavity, but attaches itself to the body.
