You believe it is a team achievement award and i believe it is an individual award, that is why Weah in 1995 and El Fenomeno in 1996, Keegan in 1978 and to a lesser extent Belanov e.t.c have won such awards. If it is close between individuals you can then consider what they achieved with their teams.

Sneijder was an important cog in successful teams but was not the best player in the world that year. His performances were not the most exciting or outstanding and his stats were not the most impressive.

He needs to play UCL and solidfy his spot in france NT team. With competition from the likes of Rabiot, Tolisso, N'zonzi, Sissoko. Assuming Kante, Pogba and Matuidi are fit, the remaining two spots in the team will be available. Those 4 are likely going to play in CL R16.

Arsenal is not an option, Liverpool would have to sell Coutinho first (which is unlike to be this winter), Barca takes him as an option.
