Passing through jamb or direct entry which one is better? hope no discrimination?

A good question. The modalities for admission for DE and Jamb are quite different, For Jambites, most universities set a uniform cut off mark as Jamb has given them the autonomy for all courses and do the same for post UTME before announcing aggregate scores for each department later on. The DE admission is however different, candidates are required to have O'level and then lower/upper credit minimum as the case may be, some schools conduct Post UTME for DE students too in order to ascertain them so failure in that means rejection.

After admission into the university either by Jamb or DE, you guys are all in one department and as such will work together. I don't think there exist any discrimination at least during my undergraduate programme, we didn't have such occurrence as everyone is now a university student and will all be issued degree after graduation.

Also, I will say entering through Jamb is better but, that however is a personal view and subject to arguments but if you are already doing your ND plan for DE, if you are just done with secondary school or still at home, plan to enter through Jamb, don't just rush to polytechnic because you want to leave house, someone said up there it is good to pay now and play later, it is a meaningful parable.

Thank you sir. I'm asking this question bcoz I'm considering it. I did my OND in marine engineering at Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron. I was about going for HND this year but the school has suspended admissions till further notice.
I have passion for computer and I would like to study computer science if I am to go to university. the school didn't do computer science cos the only focus on maritime related courses.
I don't think if university will accept marine engineering for computer science cos it doesn't relate anyway. I'm thinking of starting afresh but it's not funny cos time has been spent already. I'm confused.

Firstly, I will advice you to drop and dump the HND idea and let's focus on something else. In life three things matters when it comes to living purposefully, your talent, personality and then passion. You have already discovered your passion, that is what a lot of people won't discover throughout their stay on earth. Passion cries for expression, it shows the potentials, skills, talents that one carries and time flies when you are fulfilling it. There is difference between success and satisfaction, when you follow your passion and work hard, you will surely be great and get satisfaction.

Now to your issue, please get a Jamb brochure and study it very well, some universities accept ND Distinction/upper credit in Mathematically based courses for their Computer science programmes e.g. IMSU and UDU and since engineering is mathematically based, you will surely be considered. If however you don't have an Upper Credit or don't meet the requirements for these schools then you can sit for another Jamb, this is your passion and what you love to do, you won't be the first person to finish ND and take Jamb again into the university . Don't think too much about the age factor, I have an uncle who spent three years at home just to get into the university for EEE, today he is successful and already made, that was his passion and he followed it passionately.

If you still want to go on with Marine Engineering, then apply for DE into AKSU, RSUST, FUPRE or NDU, but I will love you to follow your passion.

This is the best and genuine advice I can offer. I hope it helps. I wish you success in your future pursuits.

Thank you very much sir. This is very helpful. I'm grateful.
like I said if I wanna consider university I am going for computer science. Maritime Academy is the well recognized maritime institution in Nigeria. Some of those universities are not well recognized by IMO.
But the industry is crap now. no jobs. the little ones available is based on man know man. that's how Nigeria labour market is. I want an entrepreneurial course and computer science is one of it. I can start earning money on my own without working for any coy if I am good in what I am doing. most important computer technology is gaining ground now and I want to take a chance. I can't bury this talent. maybe what I am facing today is a guidepost to return and do what I love. my only regret in life is not studying computer science when I finished highschool. in highschool I used to be very good in computer and internet stuffs but I lacked mentorship. that's why I ended up doing what I know I don't love bcoz I thought the course was lucrative.

A thoughtful one, I said it earlier your success and satisfaction depends on your talent, personality and passion. You already have the talent like you said, your passion will readily be channeled there with Joy, however the last thing here now is your personality, do you have the balls to take that decision?? A lot of time what fails people is their personality, they are timid and scared. Life is meant for the braved and daring ones.
I know of a friend who quit Engineering at the 3rd year to study medicine even though Engineering is lucrative but that was not his passion, can you see clearly where the personality comes into it. Today, he is doing fine in the medical line, ensure you take the best decision. If it will require you to write Jamb and start afresh, then do it with determination, dedication, diligently and prayerfully. Trust me success is sure to come.

Let your personality comes into play.

Go for d course u have passion for, HND is a scam!
I will like to share did little story wit u.........
since when I was a kid av develop interest in studying either mechanical engineering or ICT in a UNIVERSITY....my first year I manage to gain admission into oou to study geology...BT I have to reject d admission cos geology isn't my choice....I tried again d following year, I culdnt make it to d university which makes me to consider polytechnic, things got worse wen I was admitted to study another course different from wat I have d passion for in a Polytechnic...I tried my best to develop interest in building technology... at first I was really interested...with God I made upper credit in my N.D, I was overwhelmed with joy because even though I couldn't pursue d course I have d passion for..d joy of studying in a university is unending...I registered for direct entry to study quantity survey @ university of Ilorin...I also put in for HND...hmmmmnnn
after d unilorin admission screening which I manage to score 68 I felt a little bit satisfied...we waited for a very long time in expectation of d first batch...I started loosing hope wen my name was not in d first list..which prompted me to take up d polytechnic admission...@first I was happy to be in Hnd1...BT d joy didn't last...m alredi loosing interest! it kips getting worse when a lecturer ask me y didn't I switch to university instead of coming back for HND...he did advise me to start all over again if I can't get d.e admission.. I thought abt it for sometime nd I felt success in life is not all about d institution u attend...d next day in class ...its anoda lecturer with d same message...#i know majority of u re 2016 N.D set# happily we all responded yes sir! y didn't u go to the university y did u com back here no one could gv a response...with dis advice coming from two different lecturers in d same institution then it means polytechnic dsnt worth it.....no more interest in studying in a polytechnic, no more interest in studying building technology... ICT is my passion..I stumbled upon dis discussion few days ago..and truli av been convinced polytechnic is a Scam! reasons:
(1) polytechnic which is assumed to b practically oriented...now offers little or no practical..except from d compulsory I.t after N.D which a higher percentage of o.n.d graduate did not do in the field related to their course
(2) the higher percentage of the lecturers re all either HND graduate or bsc graduate..without any post graduate degree
(3) facilities- zero!
(4) corruption-100%
(5) HND nd bcs dichotomy is unending.......
I av make up my mind to quit to pursue my passion..................
HND has nothing to offer: to d smart polytechnic student pls.......don't go bck to DAT skul for HND
try ur best to get a d.e admission or start all over again....HND is trash!

So many people have been deceived by the falsehood you post up there, these life sha.

Pls sir sorry for disturbing you. I'm always glad to find out things from someone who knows better than I do.
pls what if I go for HND then I do direct entry.
that will take 4 years. now I'll have ND, HND and Bsc degree. instead of doing 4 years for Bsc and at the end I'll have Bsc and ND. plus jamb stress.
is it a good idea? Hoping to hear from you. Thank you

You need to choose a path that you believe will work for you, have given my advice up there. If you want to go for HND then Bsc that's a cross to bear, If you are also gunning for Bsc directly that's another cross to bear. What you have posted up there are two routes you can take, but no need running away from Jamb stress, life in itself is stressful, we all must live with it so if you can face the stress then give your best to Jamb but if you can't then you can pass through the second route just that most times after getting the HND, you are eager to start earning and the scale of going back to school might be removed. To him that believe, all things are possible. We must learn to follow our dreams.

It brings success and satisfaction.

It depends on your course of study.
If you're studying Bus admin, accountancy, & applied sciences, then you should try to graduate from HND with an upper credit. Unilag's Distance learning institute will grant you admission to start from 300 level.
All you need is to buy the form and seat for an entrance exam . Though it is a part time program, you will get same Bsc certificate as other Unilag graduates.

Let's stop deceiving ourselves and say the truth.
Most banks employ HND graduates than BSC because they have the experience due to their exposure back in school.
Most unemployed or unemployable graduates are BSC holders because even to write a formal letter they can't.

The bottomline is go get a skill and forget these bsc stuff except you you want to remain unemployed for life and still at home during mama put, mama thank you.

HMMm, they employ the HNDs to get about 40k-89k as salary, do you know how much the graduate dey give full employments get?
