Tension has gripped the people of Niger State and security operatives in the state as some youths threaten to blow up the three hydroelectric dams in the state over the persistent decline in electricity supply to consumers.

The security operatives in the state and the government have also been gripped with fear by the threat because similar threat to occupy the Abuja Electricity Development Company (AEDC) offices issued by the youths was carried out and resulted in four-day blackout in Minna and environs last December.

As a result, security has been beefed up around all the electricity installations, including the Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro hydroelectric dams.

The #YouthleadNigeria# had given the AEDC up to January 5 to improve its services by ensuring uninterrupted supply of electricity for 24 hours daily or face the consequences.

Convener of the group, Mohammed Saidu Etsu, told journalists in Minna at the weekend that “AEDC has not met our demands so we will carry out our actions including blowing up of the hydroelectric dams in the state

According to him, “We will begin sit-out at the Shiroro Transmission Station in Minna from Monday (today), and our members throughout the state will occupy all AEDC offices to show that we are serious about our demands.”
He asked the people of the state to “join us in this project,” saying: “For once, we should stand up for our right.”
Flanked by other officials of the group, Etsu declared that “instead of the AEDC to meet our demands, we are retrogressing, resulting in all businesses collapsing; investors refusing to invest in the state, unemployment increasing by the day.
“We learnt that the government has met with the AEDC officials and reach agreement with them; the government has not briefed us, if we have to change our position, the government must be ready to be held accountable, and assure us that AEDC will give 24-hour supply of electricity.”
The #YouthleadNigeria, he said, would also this week institute a N100billion suit against the AEDC to “recover the amount illegally made from our people as a result of estimated billings over the years compensation for families who lost their loved ones and property as a result of power surge around the state and others.”
Etsu categorically denied that the group was being sponsored by some people in the state, insisting that “what we are doing is a just cause.”
All the security agencies in the state were keeping mute on the issue but Akelicious observed that there is increased presence in all AEDC offices in Minna, the state capital.

Brother; reasons Niger state has to suffer just like an average state in naija on power sector... what ever is generated both from Shiroro. Kaiji and jebba is transmitted to Oshogbo from there the voltage is allocated to every states through national grid... so niger state donst consumed from the electricity being generated directly from those dams.. instade from the one allocated to them from TCN @ oshogbo......

Our mumu don do really shocked

For once you Nigerians should stop blaming poor power supply on some amorphous body called our 'leaders'.

Power, both at generation and distribution has been in private hands since 2014. GEJ offered you guys the chance to say no to privatization, and you all kept quiet.

Second, we need billions of dollars to guarantee 24/7 light. We need investments upward of 15bn USD for the next few years to fix transmission, fix power generation, etc.

And the fact is, even at full capacity, 7000mw is not going to give Nigeria light 24/7....when Lagos town needs 10000MW alone.

Finally, we Nigerians aggravate the problem by not paying our bills , by bypassing the prepaid meters, by chasing DISCO officers when they come to enforce bill payment, by bribing DISCO guys too. How can you get servicies you are not paying for? Yes, govt agencies are guilty of same, but so are millions of Nigerians.

And the bills we pay aren't even enough. And we are not even earning enough from oil..we need oil to be at $139 per barrel to have a budget free from borrowing.....to fund power.

So, if you want to blame govt for power..go ahead. Blame yourself too.

P.S...Blowing up the dams won't make a difference....it would only make things worse....drives away investors, plus we would have to take a big fat loan to fix things.

Wetin you dey talk about?

Power has not been govt's responsibility since 2014.

Plus, selling electricity to other countries provides.....you guessed it...income for Nigeria.

South Africa sells electricity too....to most of the Southern hemisphere African countries.

Even then...24/7 power needs $300 bn over the next 3 years. Our reserve is $36bn. Chew on that...before you blame govt, past or present.

I beg to disagree with you second paragraph as the government still has substantial shares in power generation though the distribution aspect is wholly commercialized with inefficient players running the show.

Our qualms with the government is that it has failed to provide the regulatory framework to grow the power sector.

Like you did allude, Lagos alone can utilize our total power generation, so why not decentralise the grid network and make the States consume what they generate instead of feeding all power into a national grid system that collapses when power drops below a certain benchmark.

Power in its current arrangement is stalling development of critical sectors of the economy.

lolz... that is the situation.. we common Nigerians are also barrier for not enjoying 24hr of light..
believe you me. many of them trying to distroy those dams have not even paid there bill of last 3months.... but will be liesing under those who have paid....
i was at Shiroro dam last year, when i was taking to the top of the dam. the engineer there was lamenting that some part of the water body right now need urgent draining. because the water use in shiroro dam is seasonal which means they have to store the water during raining season.. and the challange now is where to to store the water is almost filled with sand and shiroro dam has mordern equipment more than Kaiji and jebba dam... below is proudly me at shiroro dam.cc

Power in Naija State is pathetic, less than 5 hours of light daily.
One idiot mentioned something about Hausa Fulani amongst the first commenters.
Undereducated ipobian , Niger State is a mixture of different tribes, with Nupe and I think Gbagyi being the majority.
