Gelegele Seaport development to begin as Obaseki signs MoU with China Harbour

The Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), for the development of the Gelegele Seaport and other transport infrastructure in the state.

The landmark event which held in China today, will see China Harbour Engineering Company, the biggest infrastructure company in China, with a robust portfolio covering the broad infrastructure spectrum, lead the development of the seaport that will serve as the gateway for exporting manufactured goods from the Benin Industrial Park under construction and other manufacturing companies in the region.

The MoU signing is the result of series of engagements between Governor Obaseki and the Chairman of China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC), Mr Lin Yichong, which started last year.

Some of the projects the Chinese company is handling include the construction-dredging/excavation for waterfront development in Yanbu, southwest Saudi Arabia and on the northern shore of the Red Sea as well as the Lagos moles repair project, being executed by the Nigeria Port Authority.

Others are the Offshore Approach Light Structure in New Doha International Airport, which includes three terminal bridges and three temporary steel bridges and the Ma’aden Infrastructure Project Port Design and Construction, owned by the Saudi Arabian Mining Company, amongst others.

Earlier, the governor was at the Nigerian Embassy in China to discuss his developmental plans for Edo State with officials of the Nigerian Mission in the Asian country and sought areas of collaboration.

OP, the Gelegele seaport has been in the pipeline for a long time. Hope the project sees the light of day. Is there a motorable road to Gelegele from Benin. Also does the govt have any intention of rehabilitating the Siluko River Port . It was really a very useful port when it was functional and immensely boosted the localeconomy of the Iguobazuwa-Siluko axis. It also provided alternative means of transportation of goods from Lagos to Benin back then.

This guy is a doer.

While other states would typically be begging the federal government to come and build for them, Obaseki is pushing ahead and ahead.

Edo State would be the first state to successfully build a world class Port.

The beauty is that the Gelegele Port is not built with imports in mind but with exportation of manufactured Agro/ Allied Produce.
The port is tied to the N200billion Benin Industrial Park which is already being built.
The park is tied to the 1000MW AZura power project. The first phase of 450MW has been test run and would be ready for commissioning in a few months.

If you think this project will ever come to life, then you are mentally challenged. No SS or SE port will ever come to life without war...the plan is to only keep SW ports opened to make SE and SS dependent on One Nigeria while they continue to steal their oil. Keeping only SW ports opened makes Yorubaa to support One Nigeria because they are benefiting. Why do you think Yorubaas support One Nigeria despite the deaths and sufferings in the land? Even if Fulanis slaughter 5 million in Benue, Afonjas don't give a damn. This is what we call Strategic Compensatory Psychology.

Edo people ask yourselves...why have They not open the ports in SS(Port Harcourt, Calabar, Onne and Warri) to function to the capacity of Lagos ports, yet they are telling you that another one will be built in the same SS? Edo people use your sense nah.

Watch as Afonjas will attack me...because they know deep in their heart that this port will never come to fruition and are angry I'm exposing them.

You haven't. Its difficult to believe especially considering the level of neglect Siluko has undergone
The boom era was in the late70's/early80'/s when it had a River port on the Siluko river that flows into the
Atlantic Ocean. This easily served as a route for commerce to Lagos and its ports. But then the menace of water hyacinth set in. gradually until navigation completely became impossible.

Obaseki have dreams and visions for EDO state. This sea port is no doubt going to pave way for a new commercial center in the heart of the South south.

Well, I won’t respond to you the way you wrote. I would just ignore and be civil.

The problem with this kind of victim mentality is that it accords so much power to your perceived enemies which automatically suppresses your own power.

The rule of the game is to ensure that you don’t have to depend on the FG for anything concrete. The problem with every other port in Nigeria is that they are all import dependent. Everybody views port operations from the perspective of how they can access goods from overseas.
If you tweak that perspective and start thinking how you can ship goods first to other African countries and then subsequently to the rest of the world, then you’ll be unto something.
Lagos ports that everybody complains about doesn’t even export one tenth of what Onne and Delta ports export. These 2 ports control 85% of Nigeria’s exports even though it’s just oil.

The great thing about the Gelegele port plan is that it is tied to the massive industrial park which is already being built. And the industrial park is tied to AZura power plant which has been fully built. And the AZura plant is tied to the presence of a gas pipeline hub in Oben that connects much of the gas in the Niger Delta to the rest of the country.

So yes, I think the hegemony up North would try to prevent this from happening, but the Governor is smart and has Dangote heavily invested and we all know that anything Dangote touches moves with speed. So yes, this will see the light of day.

Gelegele seaport. It is tied to the Benin Industrial Park project which would see lots of Agro Allied companies set up shop to process raw materials and move the value added goods through the port to the rest of the world.

Capital projects in Nigeria are pathways to embezzle big money. I just hope Obaseki is a different breed of politician.
We are watching, vizaviz the budget for the project.
