The Federal Government, with the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has disclosed plans to launch a N10billion fund for the National Egg Production Scheme (NEPRO) in the country.

The target of the scheme is to achieve a daily production of 50million eggs over the next five years for the purpose of local consumption, export and processing into egg powder for use in confectionaries and pharmaceuticals.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, during a press conference announcing the launch of the programme in Ondo State, last Friday disclosed that the programme would provide one million jobs nationwide through egg production, processing and marketing.

Noting that there may have been a loss of four million jobs in the city last year, he said an additional six million jobs were created in the rural areas in the last two years, and additional one million jobs from the egg production would increase the number of jobs created in the sector.Ogbeh disclosed that the loan to be provided by the CBN will be disbursed by the Bank of Agriculture (BoA), at a single digit interest rate of nine percent, and would be piloted in six states of Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Kebbi, Kogi and Ondo.

Ogbeh explained that if the loan is approved by the CBN each farmer would get N4.2million with repayment spread over 30 months, each farmer would be self reliant with physical assets worth over N2.8million and cash assets of N1.68million.

The programme would also develop local capacity for the processing of minimum of 75 percent of table eggs, produced shelf table egg based products such as egg powder.

The Chairman, Tuns farm, Tunde Badmus, the anchor person for the programme, commended the government for the support given to poultry farmers, saying it was the first time they were getting such support from the government.

The project will be officially flagged off today (Friday), nationwide and would help conserve foreign exchange through the provision of egg processing machine to turn egg into powder. He said: “the secondary aspect of the production is processing that is capable of crushing 200,000 eggs per hour. The factory is expected to take off in June this year, because it is expected that the eggs would start coming out from that period.”

He disclosed that they are in talks with the Nigerian Railway Corporation, to provide a railway coach that would be specifically designed to convey eggs from different parts of the country to the processing plants.

I think they should focus on enabling and patronizing the private sector. Several private poultry farms are closing down because of lack of patronage. There are enough eggs but they need better funding for logistics etc.

Let them also invest heavily in technology/ ICT. This is one way to really empower the youths in Nigeria. Build ICT centers with good internet and constant power supply. Make Wi-Fi available in all Federal universities. This present world has gone beyond just egg production.

3rd will just pick 1billion and then pass it to another contractor
4th will remove 1billion then pass it
5th will now remove 1billion,
then the person that want to do the work gan gan will do work of 500million and run away with the remaining.

that's what use to happen in this country. chop make i chop till it vanishes, we don't care if it is quality, just let them see that we do it.

This project was initiated by Tuns farm 2 years ago and it’s been successful, the government just keyed into the scheme... all you miserable doubting Thomas ... you doubted rice scheme, doubted N-power while some people keep benefiting... Sit down in your one room and keep doubting while the smart ones make money

Herdsmen crisis: FG defines cattle colony… Benue rejects idea

The federal government has defined the colony, being presented to be a panacea to herders, farmers clashes, as “areas carved out for different species of animal whether by nature or by human design that is found in a large community sharing the same terrain”.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh made this clarification while receiving the governors of Kogi and Plateau states who were in his office to discuss how the cattle colony policy can be implemented in their domains.

He said, “We have big colonies in certain areas. If you go to the West Indies, crocodiles and alligators are bred in colonies where they harvest them for shoes and belts and ladies’ handbags. So, a colony is a much bigger thing than a ranch. They are basically about the same kind of thing.

“We are talking of colonies because 20, 30, or 40 ranchers can share the same colony. A ranch is usually owned by an individual or a company with sometimes very few. Some have more than 200 or 300 cows. In a cattle colony, you could find thirty thousand cows owned by different owners.

“The reason we are designing the colony is that we want to prepare on a large scale, on the economy of scale, a place where many owners of cattle can co-exist, be fed well because we can make their feeds. They can get good water to drink. Cows drink a lot of water. We can give them green fodder.

They are blunt liars. It will still be given to those who matters. The same thing they said in 2017 on agriculture - cassava planting in which my brother applied, submitted all the documentation requested through Access Bank. At the end, nothing came out of it. The money would have been used by those who matters among the CBN staff. This same government will be canvassing that people should embrace farming without land, equipment and money provision to execute it.

May God deliver us in this country from the hand of government full of lies.

Re: CBN To Launch N10 Billion Fund For Egg Production by Jessam: 8:07am On Jan 12, 2018
Not realistic, the problem with egg production in Nigeria is the cost of feed, and to small extent drugs. Why would a farmer take out a loan to purchase expensive poultry feed only to sell below their cost input....... Instead the government should implement measures to help bring down, and maintain feed costs. such as give discount vouchers, reduce import duties, incentives for maize farmers, subsidize poultry feed, work with feed manufacturers. Feed is 80% of the cost of producing eggs, deal with that and egg production will grow massively.

Jessam farms Ltd is a real livestock operator and we produce eggs, rear chickens, pigs, goats and cows. FARMERS NEED REAL SOLUTIONS WE WONT TAKE THESE TYPE OF LOANS THAT WILL CRASH OUR BUSINESS.
