One assignment per week? Hahahahaha later when the child starts misbehaving due to idleness, they blame the school. Nigerian parents have become lazy. They have transferred total training of their children to the schools, both academic and moral training.
And by the way, no teacher can give a student six hours worth of assignment. That's a big lie. Do you know the number of assignments teachers will mark? Lazy parent
In my time, homework are activities based, mostly. It is usually inside those work book that are approved by the ministry of education inline with the curriculum and overall goal of the National Policy on Education. Homeworks are not given frequently. We close earlier. What you have now is unqualified teachers, School owners who know nothing on educational goals. Most of the books these schools use aren't approved by the ministry of education and cannot meet the expected positive change in learners inline with the educational goals of the National Policy on Education hence the bombarding of learners with so much "junk" workload in order to appear effective.

Very very true, a colleague of mine came late to work the other and when I asked her why she said she was writing her daughter's assignment, that it was from 1-300 for a small girl in primary 1 that cannot write very well. You can imagine that. Something needs to be done.

The painful part is giving kids homework on what hasn't being taught. A few times, I have returned the homework back undone and asked my kid to tell his aunty he doesn't understand it.

IT IS TRUE. THE MAJOR CAUSE IS QUACK TEACHER AND NON-TEACHER PARENTS WHO ARE OVER AMBITIOUS OVER THEIR CHILD SUCCESS. I'VE EXPERIENCED THE SAME WITH MY DAUGHTER IN HER SCHOOL.
MATHEMATIC IN

[b]Oga, bring your children to America and faint with homeworks.
Imagine my 4th Grade son given an assignment to write a Book?
The boy tried his best and I was impressed and I was happy to help him out.

Also when he comes home with Science, Mathematics, etc I have no clue on how to begin.
I begin to get angry with the school for giving a 4th Grade student something we did in Class 2 in Nigeria?
I think they give them these tough work so that they won't have time to play!

There was a time, I wanted to go to the PTA Meeting to complain about the tough homeworks, but I just respected myself because I don't want to make a fool of myself thinking other parents may just laugh at me.

Oga, please come and see the assignment given to Elementary & Middle School students; I'm not even talking of High School. Just come and see and faint!!!

[quote author=IamHeWrites post=64118003]An Angry Nigerian dad took to his Facebook page,
“Esv Jibrilla Madu Gadzama” to call out teachers in private schools and accused them of shifting the responsibility of teachers to parents, by way of giving them too much homeworks.

Below is what he wrote on Facebook;
"FRAUD BY NIGERIAN PRIVATE SCHOOLS
HOMEWORK! HOMEWORK! AND MORE HOMEWORK FOR PARENTS.

It has become clear to many parents that the task of teaching their children has been shifted to them despite the huge fees they keep doling out to private schools.

Children come home with homework that requires over 6 hours to complete and the children are usually clueless about the topic. Clearly some of these topics were never introduced in class and the burden of breaking in the topic is shifted to the parents.

In some cases a topic is given a very brief introduction in class then a slew of tasks is bundled as assignments and becomes the parent’s responsibility to ground the child in the subject.

Nigerian parents remain docile. They know they are being shafted but continue to take it.
Some schools try to drive the narrative that all other kids are up to par and only yours is finding it difficult.

Bull! The teachers are trained to sell you that line (the only training they seem to receive). This belief gives every parent a catch-up mentality. So you either enroll in their “extra lessons ” or you find yourself doing homework for your children everyday.

This phenomenon (fraud) was prevalent in China until parents got together and fought against it.

After paying exorbitant school fees, the schools pay peanuts to the teachers. Some private school teachers in Nigeria consider themselves unemployed because their remuneration is so small!

They can’t be bothered to be dedicated. Besides many just simply are untrained.

The private schools have found a solution: transfer the teaching tasks to the parents!

Parents must individually reject this fraud!
Insist on only one assignment per subject per week. If the schools won’t comply then we must refuse to pay school fees this January!

Insist that teaching must be in the classroom! Not through ‘extra lessons ‘!

It is a big lie that every other child except yours is doing well! They only exploit your competitive spirit!

Enough is enough! Teach our children or we will not pay the school fees! If we are doing all the work we might as well enroll them in the LEA public schools!"

This man just gave words and meaning to what I have been observing and saying to those close to me. our kids are young and they ought to use the most part of their formative years to play and not to worry about the world and other things. school stuffs should be as little as possible and playing time should be much more.
There was a day I has to be at work as early as possible and so I was out of the house by 5.30 am and lol and behold saw a school bus with a kid inside going to school at that time of the day and I wanted to cry for that kid. a kid that is meant to be slepping is on her way to school. looking back I bless God for my parents I never work up as early as that. its well

that 's why you have to enrol your child to an extra lesson, all those assignments would be taken care of at the lesson
