Good Day Everyone,
I do have a safepower 3.5kva 48v inverter for 2 year+
But I noticed an issue with it,
Before now, while charging;
It's indicates it current bar then continue upwards,
In the sense that, if it was remaining 2 bars before (2/4),
When it starts charging it goes from 2/4, 3/4 4/4 back to 2/4 in that circle till it gain a bar and so on it gets full,
But of recent after getting some new batteries,
For a while now I noticed it doesn't operates in such fashion anymore, now it starts from 0/4 to 4/4 ( even if it was remaining 3/4 bar before) circle till it shows "fully charged" and by then the batteries are literally hissing.

Please is this normal from anyone experience?
Or has the charging algorithm gone bad? If so, is it fixable? Has anyone else had such issue with their inverter and noticed any form of overcharging?

I do appreciate and await a response

Regards,
EF

how many solar panels do I need for 200ah battery

cokegee:

how many solar panels do I need for 200ah battery

Hello, let's assume you practically discharge your 200ah battery to 50% everynight;
you would be consuming just about 1.2KwH
And you need at least 400Watts of panel power to recharge the battery back in about 4 hours sunlight . . .
I mentioned 400 Watts because it would be downplayed to about 300W x 4 hrs= 1.2kwH considering conversion losses . .

Thats just the basics . . If you wish to power some loads during the day(opportunistic loads), therefore you would need to add more panels;
depending on power requirement.

Your questions is totally dependent on your daily consumption . you need to put back what you have consumed daily with min of 4hours sunlight or 6hour's sunlight daily pending on your state / geographical location . You must also consider losses due to heat, cable length, unsteady weather ,solar panel standard, partial shading, panel inclination-positioning etc .. Experienced installers tag 100w panels to be 75-80w, while some tag 100w to be 50-60w panels as some Chinese panels perform below average of it's rated nameplate "50% efficiency" on the short run !

Therefore , for your 12v 200a power system , I will advice you get 150w 12v panel for a start as the higher the panel ratings/output -the better . Add one more making it 150w×2 later on ... I strongly advice against 100w not that it won't work but why not go for 150w when price margin between the 2 isn't above 5-8k considering futuristic loads et al.. Cheer's

I have a question because I'm an inverter owner who intends to upgrade to a solar system. Is it safe to connect the charge controller and the inverter to the battery at same time? What I'm saying is won't the inverter and the charging coming from the charge controller over charge battery if there's electricity.

This is a very serious concern,
Imagine having a 200ah battery and inverter is giving out 30a already and solar is contributing with extra 30a.
That's like 60a at a go,
From my simple understanding, that battery is toast!
Well, unless there's a way this is managed, I assume this to be a very serious concern.

Not exactly.

As long as one or both chargers is an intelligent charger, no harm will be done.

A charger reads state of charge to determine the level of charge. See picture below.

A 12v battery at 12.6v + means full charge. Both chargers will see this and stop charging.

Same battery at 11.9v is 40% charged. Both charges will see this but which ever is faster or whichever is switched on first will see this low charge and starts charging by raising the voltage appropriately to 13v and above.

The second charger which is either switched on later or is slow will see the high voltage and assume it is full and wont charge.

If i have solar and nepa to charge, if i prefer solar to charge, i will turn off nepa for a minute. While solar is charging, turning nepa will not amount to anything.

I have another question if you don't mind. The picture below is the inverter I'm presently using for my backup. I've Googled to no avail about it(Google wasn't friendly this time). I want to know about its specifications eg charging amps, does it do the 3ccc charge, does it need a stablizer etc etc.

HOW TO CLEAN SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels are generally self cleaning, but in particularly dry areas or where panel tilt is minimal, dust and other substances such as bird droppings can build up over time and impact on the amount electricity generated by a module. Grime and bird poop doesn’t need to cover an entire panel to have an effect. This is where cleaning solar panels may have to be done. And for the longer term, you may be asking “how often to replace a solar panel?”

Cleaning solar panels

Tips for cleaning solar panels glass
Safety first for cleaning solar panels – follow the procedure in your manual for shutting down the system before commencing cleaning.

For safety reasons, it’s also wise to clean your panels from the ground if possible. A good quality soft brush and a squeegee with a plastic blade on one side and a cloth covered sponge on the other coupled with a long extension can make for the perfect tools allowing you to stay on the ground. Use a hose with a suitable nozzle to allow the stream of water to reach the panels.

NOTE: If cleaning your panels from the ground is not possible, do not attempt to access your rooftop unless you have the appropriate safety equipment and training. If you don’t; hire a suitably qualified professional instead.

Clean your solar panels on an overcast day, early in the morning or in the evening. If the sun is beating down on the panels, any water used can quickly evaporate and dirt will become smeared.

Early morning can be a particularly good time for cleaning as dew that has settled on the panels overnight will likely have softened grime; meaning you’ll need to use less water and less energy to clean your solar panels.

If the panels are dry, before tackling the modules with water, brush off any loose materials first – this will make cleaning easier and faster.

Don’t use metal objects or harsh abrasive products for removing caked on materials – scratching the glass on a solar panel can affect its performance as scratches will cast shadows. Avoid using detergents if possible as these may streak the glass of the panel. Use of abrasive powders also risks scratching the panels.

Given the nature of good quality solar panel glass, clean water and a little scrubbing with a coarse cloth covered sponge or soft brush should remove the most stubborn grime. Plastic scourers may also be used.

If your mains-supplied water is hard (mineral-rich) and rainwater is available; use that as a final rinse; then squeegee dry. If hard water is all you have, just be sure to squeegee well as mineral-ladened water can form deposits on glass as it dries.

Dealing with oily stains
Oily stains can occur in some installation scenarios, such as if you live near an airport and are under a flight path or if you live adjacent to and downwind of a major roadway frequented by trucks. If oily stains start appearing on your panels; isopropyl alcohol can be used as a spot-cleaning substance..

The final word on solar panel cleaning
The old saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies – in most residential installation scenarios, cleaning solar panels just isn’t worth the bother – or the potential danger if accessing your rooftop. Unless dirt is clearly visible or performance is noticeably impacted; simply let nature do the job for you – just as it does in creating solar power .

How often to replace a solar panel?

“How often to replace a solar panel?” is a question you may ask when purchasing a system, or even after several years of ownership. So, how long will a solar panel last? Most of our high quality solar panels(Canadian solar, solar world, Lorentz, Yachi , Jinko etc) have up to 25 years performance guarantee, and it is expected that a lifetime of 40 years is possible. Note, this dosnt apply to substandard solar panels . Cheer's

Hello House, I need some expert advice on my soalr inverter set up. I have two 150ah batteries, 850w innova inverter(bought in 2010), 4units 130w solar panels and a 30a Mppt solar charge controller. I recently bought a battery charger to hasten the charge rate. I am not connected to public power supply at all so I depend on my 9.5Kva gen and the sun to charge my batteries. However I discovered that when my generator is on, (I use the gen to service my borehole, launder and iron clothes), and I connect the battery charger, the percentage on the charge controller leaps forward by as much as 10% . However when the battery charge indicator begins to flash at 99%, I disconnect the battery charger. But once I do this, the percentage drops to about 70%. Is this normal or is something wrong with my batteries? The batteries are barely 3 months old.

Secondly is it right to use an external battery charger with the inverter(I use to think inverters have chargers already) combined with the solar panels? Am I not overcharging the batteries?

Should I decide to charge my batteries with only solar, are my 4 units of 130w panels (520w total) enough? If no, what capacity of panels will effectively charge my two batteries to 100% in 6hours. Please note that the batteries are connected parallel (12v)

Thank you for your help

Thank you for your help

what you described about the batt charger and charge controller is normal..depending on the output voltages of the 2 devices.
to your other question, without seeing actual data about ur daily harvest from ur cc, its a lil difficult to give you a concise answer.
but a rough calculation tellme that u shud be getting abt 80 to 120ah daily....which should be sufficient to charge your bank of 150ah if perchance you discharge it to 50% daily.
12v systems are not very flexible and energy losses are bound to occur,
tell me your avg daily harvest.

also next time direct your questions to this thread, you will get more views and answers there.
