Poorly equipped military yet, they waged war against the British for close to 40 years. The Binis have never claimed to conquer Igboland or fight them unlike when of recent, Lagos and Ado-Ekiti were being debated. I really do wonder where you get your history from. Isn't it Maclatunji, the one who enjoys twisting things to suit his purpose? undecided

LOL! Of a truth, the narrative has been making sense.

On the contrary, I think the Nok culture (from which it was claimed the Yoruba and Bini culture are an offshoot of it) was the oldest in present day Nigeria.

Hehehehe.. Please tell me more about the British-Igbo war. #LWKMD

What is so Igbotic about Oyinbo and Akara?
Lol Akara that is the favorite food of was it Sango or one of these 14th century Yoruba figures.
Ogiri is under contention. That one might be an actual shared word from antiquity like Iba.

What is the Igbo word for masquerade?

it's called mmanwu...

can you tell me the Yoruba word for Rice grin

While Igbos use a borrowed Hausa term.

We really need to look into African history which was majorly written by Europeans.

It appears Igbos must have influenced Yorubas one way or the other because the frequency of etymological similarities is rather curious ...

Ogwu and ogun - medicine

Iba is clearly a traditional Igbo word for malaria...If Yorubas use it, they are doing borrow borrow...

Borro borro ko.... Yoruboids bound Igbos directly or indirectly on two sides, while Yorubas don't share border with any known igboid peoples.

Who is borrowing what?

Do you even know that conc Nsukka Igbo might contain up to 15% Yoruba-ish words?

The report I quoted states thousands. That's almost the equivalent of millions by today's standards. I call it 'subjugation', you call it 'kidnapping'.

Is it even possible for Igbos to kidnap Igbos, move them to the coastlines to be sold to Europeans in places they do not control?

That is where access to the sea comes in. Igbos did not dislike themselves enough to sell the number of slaves that were taken out of Igboland, it was not kidnapping too. The only rational explanation, is a superior force raiding Igboland for a very long time. It wasn't the Nupe nor Yoruba, it had to be your immediate neighbours, the Bini.

1. You contradict yourself. Did you not in an earlier post allude to the fact that Igbos lived autonomously in dispersed communities? How then might a sense of oneness have been established between an Igbo community in Owerri and another in Abakiliki. Igbo groups did not identify as Igbo until fairly recently.
2. The word subjugate means to "bring under domination or control, especially by conquest.",
conquer, vanquish, defeat, crush, quell, quash, gain mastery over, gain ascendancy over, gain control of, bring under the yoke, bring to heel, bring someone to their knees, overcome, overpower, hegemonize etc.
I ask you once again to prove that Igbos were "subjugated" using the tests I mentioned earlier.
E.g. Modern English includes a mix of Anglo-saxon, Latin and Frankish words which demonstrates how the language was influenced by conquerors and settlers.
Scotland Gaelic is a secondary, rarely spoken language in Scotland due to years of English rule. Many Scottish names and place names have been replaced with English names.
I'm going too far. Africa is a prime example of the effects of subjugation with the residues of colonialism littered across the continent.

Can you point to any residues of Bini subjugation in Igbo land today?

Secondly ,of all the Anioma towns I want you to tell me what language they speak .

Thirdly, I want you to articulate how the Bini kingdoms dominated the Igbo,in fact tell me the Igbo towns that were defeated by the Bini.

I will not go into mocking and deriding Yoruba people because that is trashy but I want you to prove these things you claim happened ,else you wont be more that an ignorant kaikai drinker at the bus stop.

Lets just try to iron some few things out and we will be fine - unlike some others on this thread.
Honestly, I am not trying to psych you up or anything.

Egwu as I know it to be isn’t a general igbo word, am I right?
I thought Igbos generally call masquerades Mmanwu? Similar to the word Mmuo (spirits)?

Egwu/Egun is of Yoruboid origin meaning masquerades , spirits or ancestors.

alarming, be afraid

fear, formidable
earthshaking, threatened
fearsome, tracks
awesome, be scared
terrific, afraid
alarmingly, frightened...

Yes, they were autonomous and even when they fought had enough reasons to end the battles quickly. Yorubas fought wars for about 100 years. Igbos did that?

Let me break it down for you:

Village UmuX with total population of 500 fights Village Umu Y with total population of 700. The winning side has maybe 100 captives maximum. The location of the battle is 12 days from the coast, battles take place once every 10 years because quite frankly both or similar villages cannot afford to battle too much.

Is this the kind of paltry return that fuelled thousands of Igbo slaves being sold across the Americas? Nope.

I have always said it that there was no great Igbo civilization before colonization. It was the weaker communities that were being captured and sold into slavery. The implication of this is that the Benin Empire and its auxiliaries dominated the Igbo region during the 17th-18th century and in all likelihood a longer period before then.

Again , we want you the expert to prove this elusive domination we cant obviously see. How can a grown adult who has been on Nairaland for more than 10yrs spew this sort of ignorance. The joke will be on me if i dare educate you once more because you dont want to learn. So, tell us what is a civilization? Its funny because I know you are a yoruba ....lol

Don't mind him at all. People will come here spreading falsehood. He claims that other tribes dominated igbos but there is no evidence of there domination in igbo culture.

All these ancient empires they were claiming were very backward. No written language, inventions, philosophies etc which we use to know impactful empires.

They claim Benin empire was great, how impactful were they.

The only impactful empire as far as Nigeria is concerned is the uthman danfodios Fulani empire. Highly organized and we'll structured and funny thing they are the ones still controling Nigeria today, because of the sound structure bequeathed to them. they should show us the influence of Benin and oyo empire they claim on today's Nigeria or should stop making noise.

I'm Yoruba but I absolutely agree with u....
U cant claim civilisation without anything to show for it....
An advanced civilisation goes beyond conquering n subjugating ur neighbours....
There must be both physical n social evidence of such empire visible to all.....
I live in canterbury and I marvel at the city walls, cathedrals, castles etc built hundreds of years ago by its inhabitants.....
Thousands come from all over the world just to visit these monuments.....
Where is the contemporary of such in ancient African civilisation....
None bothered to invent the wheel to make transportation easier....
None made effort to have an organised n structured religion strong enough to resist foreign ones.....
None of the traditional healers made any effort whereby knowledge of herbs could be taught n passed on in a structured manner in order to prevent abuse n corruption of the practice.... .
Ancient civilisation has a standard definition n redefining it to suit to own ego is unacceptable.....
Rather, let's learn from our ancestors n ensure we build a proper African civilisation we can proudly bequeath to our children.
