Hmmm..... I think this law is not okay...

Imagine if Dangote say you must learn Hausa before being employed??

I thought Nigeria thinks of multi integration... honestly the solution is restructuring or break up... so everyone goes their respective ways.

Even as a Yoruba I don't like this law....

Primary Schools, I get and support. Secondary Schools, I understand and support. Tertiary institutions, ke? So someone studying Engineering in LASU has to concern himself with Yoruba as a GS course, even though they might have no background of speaking or writing it.
Lagos State House of Reps don't have anything better to do with their time? Smacks of seeking cheap relevance.

Must they copy Lagos state

When Northern states started their Sharia law, did others in the South follow? No.

So it’s not compulsory for other states to follow.

If you must attend school in the West, you can go to Osun, Oyo, Ondo for now where there is no law about Yoruba language being used for admission.

see ur mouth..u soun so tribalistic.....other states will follow, after all sharia stated in zamfara n spread to other states..you are lucky it did not get to oshogbo......i grew up in Lagos , ajegunle so I knw wat am talking about...the policy is good as long as no federal tertiary institution is involve in the law...Yoruba is not nigeria lingua franca....so stop this ur bla bla here

Very good development. I see our languages get extinct in the next 50 years if drastic measures are not taken.
Preserving the language begins at home. Losing the language begins at home. If you don't insist on your language being the only one spoken in the home you can't expect it to be preserved. Too many of us have our kids watch cartoons..... watch American movies 'so we can learn to speak like Americans'.... do we realize we are killing our own language?
@ topic...... Lagos is not a country...it is a State.... the national language can be mandatory in schools. ....any other language ...optional. If this stands...then it is the beginning of going down a slippery slope....various states doing the same...then different communities within each state making their local dialect mandatory.... all because of this dumb short sighted policy.

Interesting. Was it not this same month that the French government asked Nigerians to come school in France as they were now offering courses in English.

Here in Nigeria, we are moving backward. What is the value of Yoruba language to a person studying an Engineering course?

Retrogressive policies cry

In France engineering is taught in French notEnglish
In China engineering is taught in Chinese not English
In Spain engineering is taught in Spanish not English
In Hungary engineering is taught in Hungarian not English
In Italy engineering is taught in Italian not English
In Germany engineering is taught in German not English

Given these examples, why can't engineering be taught in Yoruba on YORUBALAND?

This is very good development. We africans nay black africans always undervalue ourselves. To go to school in arab nations including all the north africans, you have to learn and speak arabic,to go to school in UK and US you have to learn and speak english,so be it in France,Bulgaria,Japan, China and many other countries that were colonised, why is it different from the black africans who still keep colonial language as lingua franca?

Tetiary institutions in Lagos

This is vague. Does the law mean all tetiary institutions in Lagos which includes Yabatech and UNILAG and other private institutions or Lagos state owned ones only?

Can this law be held in federal secondary schools like Kings and Queens college?

You do that in basic education, from primary to secondary level at the formative years of citizens. Not in universities for adults. Our education system is unfocused and meandering enough as it is where a 3-year Engineering program in the UK and other European countries takes 5 solid years minimum in Nigeria due to a host of irrelevant 1st and 2nd year courses. Now such a student also has to concern himself doing language courses in GS. How is that relevant to his tertiary education?

No federal university is involved in this

This is our law

If you can’t learn or speak Yoruba, pls, go back to your region

If you see Yorubas in your region, make it compulsory for them to speak your language

That person who has no background of speaking or writing it would not even gain admission in the first place. The law cannot affect those who are already in school. It is with those who are yet to come in that it will start from.

u really don't get it rite, is it the student that would go to school from 8 to 6 no time to rest when they come back from school that are doing 16 courses and u expect them to pass all of them that would be happy with this development. Did u think of the childrens mental health before undergoing such. Maybe u don't know they said they it already in effect, but there are students who really don't like all this language course that are already done with tertiary education, when they become leaders maybe then u would understand that all form of culture are long dead..

Do u know , Louis Vuitton, givenchy, zanoti, tom ford, that is what is on their mind not all those old school dressing, modernization has taken over and it is here to stay. This rubbish wont last long.

Lies,France never get headache about english language.Once you are here it is a must you learn french language.English courses in France, yes but no waiver for nobody when you are doing your course, you must pass french language course to study english in France. The idea is to attract Naija students to france and get you pay their school fees.Education is free for the citizen so they need foreigners to come and pay big cash to get the system going.Alot of Asians help finance that sector, don't think english dominates french language,it won't and can never.
