Cut legislators’, ministers’ salary by half, Sanusi tells Buhari

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to review the salaries of members of the National Assembly and ministers, with a view to creating more jobs for Nigerian unemployed youths.

According to Guardian, he said this yesterday while urging political office holders to make sacrifices and salvage the country from its current economic downturn.

He argued that if the salary of each member of the National Assembly was divided into two, it would go a long way to provide more jobs for 70,400 jobless Nigerians at between N90, 000 and N92, 500 monthly salary.

Sanusi gave the charge through a statement addressed to President Buhari, while also lamenting that the salary of military personnel, who are defending the country was only N49, 000 with some of them lacking accommodation.

He said: “Where is the change? Change should start with the National Assembly. A senator receives N36million monthly. If this is divided into two, it comes to N18 million.

The second half of N18 million can be used to create jobs for 200 Nigerians, each earning N90, 000 monthly, When you multiply 200 people by 109 senators, this will give 21,800 Nigerians gainful employment.

In short, 200 Nigerians will be able to live a comfortable life on half a senator’s monthly salary.”

Further highlighting the disparity in the standard of living of public office holders, particularly the legislators, Sanusi argued that a member of the House of Representatives receives N25million monthly.

“Half of that amount is N12.5million, which is enough to employ 135 Nigerians with a monthly salary of N92, 500 each.

Buhari can’t cut legislators salary, only they can.

He can cut the salaries of his ministers no problem but if he want to tangle with the salaries and allowances of Senators and Reps......then he will know that the gentility of a cat is not the same as the gentility of a lion.

Our legislators are the highest paid in the world with nothing to show, google it, the day any president will clamp on their salary will be the beginning of nigeria's growth and development.

Even if they are paid 100 million per month they will still steal so wats the diff, when they have access to a whole lot of money the greedy traits will just be there

Cutting their salaries won't make them employ people. Why didn't you add the salaries of CBN governors?
People keep complaining about the salaries of legislators as if that's the problem we have in this country.

Generally, public office should be made less lucrative in Nigeria. Do this and see if people will still be running into politics.

That's impossible because the fear of impeachment will never make him to consider that move and moreover, election is around the corner and he will want to do all he could to be re elected, if and only if he choose to be re elected
