Injustice In My Workplace; Should I Return The Money? by bilulu(m): 9:21am On Mar 03, 2018
Good morning all,

I work as a third party in an organization (firm A employed me to work for firm B). After the interview by firm A I was posted to firm B to work and I was told by firm A how much my salary is. I was happy that I have gotten a place to always resume at though the salary wasn't much.

After working in firm B for about 4 months I realised that firm A have been under paying me to the tune of almost 20,000 per month. I was short and my morale went down. I discussed it with one of the workers in firm A and he said I should wait for a perfect time to bring it to the notice of firm B.

It continued till I got that perfect time and it was about 8 months later. the moment I brought it to their notice (firm B) the manager was furious and called the manager of firm A that they must pay me back all my arrears and also with immediate effect place me on the salary on the contract.

To cut the story short, they placed me on the salary scale of the contract and they have also paid the arrears completely.

The moment I got the alert the manager of firm A called me to come over. I got their and he was telling me how the management have agreed that I should return part of the money with plenty stories. I told him I will get back to him if to return it or not.

I am so confused on what to do. If I decide to report to the manager of firm B they might decide to cancel the contract with firm A and everybody will go home. But the manager of firm B might decide to absorb me in the next contract because of the relationship I built with him overtime.

Still viewing from this other side of firm A, if I don't return the money they might decide to sack me and give nonexisting reasons though it will still jeopardise the contract.

Please I need your advice on what to do...... should I return the money or I should keep it and report to firm B on the plans of firm A?

Nairalanders pls help.....

These statements show that firm B has authority over the actions of firm A. Firm A can only plead with you to return part of the payment but can't force or threaten you to do so coz they also don't want to ruin their relationship with firm B, knowing that firm B gave the order for you to be paid.

Firm B might question their action since you've built a good relationship with the manager.

The response you gave them is okay. keep getting back to them on whether to return it or not or tell them you're still thinking about it…till the contract ends. grin

But dude, come to think of it; it's your money! They owe you an explanation on the reason behind the deduction in the first place.

You can share this new development with the manager of firm B as well and listen to what he has to say.

just give it to them. I have experienced something similar to this, it is in a business, I had to let some of my benefits go, in order for peace to reign.
In all you do, maintain peace with everyone...

Stop talking as if they're doing you a favor. You're working for your employer simply because he/she cannot perform the task alone, and that's the reason why you've been paid for the services you rendered to the company. It is your money, refunding it back to them means that you're supporting mediocre and corruption. Why are we like this in Nigeria! Everything leave him for God to judge him! Why! That's why we are being treated like a slave in by foreigner in our own country. What a shame! We need to wake up from our slumber.

I totally agree with you
If i were in his shoes i wouldn't return that money back
As much as we'd like to maintain peace with everyone, employers should stop using the head of their employees...It's bad

It is well sha.
The way I carry myself gan when firm A manager sees me he wont even be able to say such. Imagine, you were short-changed and they dont even have any shame at all and still asking u to bring it back. God has already fought for you by getting back what belongs to you legally. Now it is in your hands you can decide to give it away again and make God regret helping you.

Be bold for once.

Please don't return any money. It's yours. Don't let anybody intimidate you. God will not come down to fight your battles for you. You have to stand up for yourself. Keep the money

Don't give in to any pressure from firm A.
Report to Human Rights Department if you can.
Stand your ground and let them do their worst....

you worked for 4 months or thereabout satisfied, happy and completely ignorant of the fact that part of your salary is being siphoned off.
you then got wind of the situation and still worked an extra 4months collecting same salary, it did not affect you much. Now you want to use your own hands to cause problems for yourself. well if they are no longer going to be underpaying you henceforth then my guy just give back some of the money let it be used to pay off the problems so you dont get in the bad light of anybody(for firm A to shamelessly turn back around again after they have credited you to ask for part refund means their are some internal workings in firm A that you might not fully understand or not aware off) just be wise, sometimes to win we dont necessarily have to fight.... if you feel employer A is greedy and just wants to collect the money behind employer B's back because he thinks he can, you can negotiate the amount, it must not be what they asked for. my 2 cents

Don't even be happy with firm B, because they started you exploitation in the first place...what is the meaning of contract with firm A? Them don collect their own share self from the transaction.

You didn't share the reasons why firm A has asked you to refund the money.

FYI, companies don't make quick decisions like that. They gave you the money as due, why taking it back? You need to tell us the reasons for the request for refund.

Also, please carry your manager at form B along, let it be known and documented. Forget about cancelling the contract because I can assure you that a bigger fish in firm B has a huge stake in firm A so nobody is cancelling anything. And thinking the manager in firm B would place u on a new contract with a supposed form C is just like thinking the sun will burn out in 2018. When the chips are down you shall discover that those you think can protect you are those that really need the protection.

If I were to be on your shoes, I would look at other gains of working on the job outside monetary value in the interim. If I have many prospects on the job I will let go of the money since I have been placed on a new contract scale but everything shall in documented with real evidences starting from the request to refund and reasons therein all to be in mail and people in cc.

Because tomorrow dem go say na over payment tjem do and you refunded accordingly.

But if no prospects dey the job. Omo na to pack my money till the latest kobo grin

Whatever you do, please note nobody is irreplaceable on any job forget relationship it's not a salvation army they are out to make profit.

Don't forget, firm B can sack you on the most flimsy of excuse and you won't see it coming. What if they say your documentation was not properly filled/correct or you have issues with the results of SBC - SECURITY BACKGROUND CHECK undecided

My thoughts exactly. Op. Since you are in good terms with manager of firm B, just have an informal chat with him and tell him what's happening.( Not formal writing o) at least this will act as an insurance cover if firm A decides to go rogue and pull some stunts. Wishing you the best

For me I would say return the part payment they are asking for, consider that you took the pay with the initial salary been manageable for you to work with. The arrears pay can be considered a bonus thus you are parting with your bonus,
In work relationships one has to be very carful not to burn bridges you never can tell what tomorrow holds
