Despite the process currently going on to create a national carrier, Akelicious has learnt that the federal government still hopes to establish the new airline on the foundation already laid by Arik Air with technical support from the maintenance section of Aero Contractors.

According to informed source from the industry, it would be a lot easier to build the national airline on the operations of Arik Air, which is currently under the management of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) along with Aero Contractors than to establish an entirely new airline.

The source said that establishing a new airline from the scratch would take a longer time and might not be realised before the termination of the current administration.

The federal government early last year established transaction advisers for a new national carrier and also for the concession of the nation’s major airports.

Akelicious also learnt that with the advancement made by Aero Contractors in establishing a maintenance facility for Boeing B737 classics and working on upgrading to conducting maintenance on New General Boeing B737 aircraft types, which is the aircraft largely in the fleet of Arik Air, it would be easy to marry the two airlines and form the basis for the establishment of a national carrier.

Although it is not yet confirmed by the Minister of State, Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, but Akelicious learnt that the federal government may work with Qatar Airways as core investor for the new national airline and if it goes as planned, the Middle East airline would supply the new carrier most of its large-body aircraft to commence operations to international destinations.

However, many airline owners currently in operation are not positively disposed to Nigeria establishing a national carrier because they believe government would favour it against them and this would drastically affect the market, as most of the passenger traffic would be mopped by the new airline, which would enjoy government’s support with waiver in charges and many other favorable considerations.

Akelicious also learnt that the owners of Aero and Arik, which are currently under the management of AMCON, have muted that they would sue the federal government if their interests are not met in the plan to establish a national carrier.

Also AMCON may not be disposed to incorporating Arik Air and Aero into the national carrier project because the Corporation is disposed to recovering its huge funds sunk in the two airlines and there would be no guarantee that these funds would be recovered when the two airlines metamorphose to a national carrier with a core investor and private sector driven management and ownership with little government stake, as enunciated by Sirika.

AMCON had earlier indicated that its management had severally turned down the request to use the two airlines as national carrier, arguing that the debt overhang in the airlines would not make such start up feasible because this means that the new airline would be laden with debts at inception.

Besides, AMCON said that it was more interested in recouping the whooping funds projected to between N16 to N20 billion expended on Aero and about N190 billion on Arik to save them from sinking and to sustain their operation.
Industry consultant and CEO of Belujane Konsult, Chris Aligbe, who is fully in support of establishing a national carrier, said that to a large extent, the federal government has been very transparent in the process of establishing a national carrier; unlike in the past when negotiations were done under the table.

On the adoption of Aero and Arik Air, Aligbe said the federal government cannot use the airlines without involving their owners, so if they sue government it might obstruct the plan to establish the national airline or delay its emergence.

On the opposition of the current domestic airlines to a national carrier, Aligbe said that he does not think that the airlines would have the locus to go to court and stand down the plan for a national carrier; rather, they could seek that whatever privileges given to the new national airline should be extended to them.
“They can go to court and seek for equal privileges because favouring one airline against others will be anti-competition,” Aligbe said.

What happened to Nigerian Airways? And why not set up a new airline instead of the diseased Arik and Aero? It's now they are hurriedly looking for something to campaign with for 2019 elections.

Have they chosen to turn a blind eye to the new grounds Air Peace is breaking? Have they seen their newest additions? The two ERJ 145 and their Boeing 777-300 series? Have they seen the asset they have on ground? That’s an airline who’s not here to play; they’re in it to win it. They currently just registered about 4 Boeing 737s in addition to the ones they have on ground and they’re expecting more.

Yet they’re looking at Aero and Arik. Are these FG guys serious right now?

Why do we need a national carrier? We should be making it easier for the likes of Arik and Aero to do business in Nigeria .

Kenya airways, Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, Air Maroc, Ethiopian airways, British airways are all national carriers. Why do you think they need a national carrier?

Over 200 hundred countries in the world and you name six?

British Airways is a private Airline, Qatar and Emirates are run by peeps with way more money than Nigeria. The remaining 3 have been in existence since way back, we had our opportunity and we ruined it.

We have more pressing need than a national airline. If the private companies cannot survive in this clime, what hope does a government run business have?

If you read the article, you'd see that Arik and Aero are owing about 190 billion and 20 billion respectively to AMCON (Asset Management Company of Nigeria) and so the government wants to capitalize on that.

Anything Buhari and his criminal gang touches, dies.
Why not?
They can acquire these airlines by corruption, after all it's been a long time since they have not commandeered any airline to carry dirty hajj travelers to and from Mecca for free!

So it's now done on buhari that he was talking rubbish when hee was talking about converting presidential fleets to national air carrier?
The most stupid thing is that some people believed him then, and more stupidly believe him now that he doesn't even believe in himself.

How about the plan to convert some of the plane on the presidential crew to national carrier or to sell some off because the former president keep excess plane? Or was it just for campaign sake.

Aeroplanes are normally bought on hire purchase so i don't know why they wouldn't start Nigeria airways afresh.

But largely all they are trying to do rush is for campaign and not for the benefits of the masses.

Buhari sought to be Nigeria President four times and succeeded the fourth time yet he is still trying to plan what to do in his third year, in fact it took him six months to set up his cabinet this tells you all this while he was contesting he was never ready, ordinarily all foundation would have been laid in 2015 after winning the election, and by now in 2018 they are commissioning project but no Buhari is still planning. This tell you hr was never serious.

I was a staunch buharist but I am very disappointed with his government and evident he has no clue about how to take Nigeria to promise land. Presently he is blinded by reelection at 77. Buhari is a mistake that need to be corrected 2019

Only the rich fly aeroplanes, government should focus on railways with a view to privatizing them. Government should liquidate and remove its hand from the running of Aero and Arik. That 210billion can work wonders in the health sector.

Why not procure brand new aircrafts as a government, at least with the recovered loots. They want to hijack these 1980's planes. 'Rwandan Airlines are brand aircrafts' a country ravaged by war and genocide... Ethiopia, Kenya and Egyptian Airlines have Airlines that fly International.
