10 Happiest Cities in Africa

By Steve Siboe

https://www.africa.com/10-happiest-cities-africa/

9 Enugu, Nigeria

Enugu is located in South Eastern Nigeria and is the capital of Enugu State. This lovely, beautiful, and quiet city has the happiest people in Nigeria. For starters, despite economic recession and insecurity challenges, Nigeria was ranked the 6th happiest country in Africa, according to the World Happiness Report 2017, with a score of 5.074. Happy Planet Index puts Nigeria’s HPI score at 22.2, life expectancy at 52.8 years, and well-being of 5.5/10. Even though the country has undergone a lot of social and economic challenges, Nigerians, especially in Enugu, have managed to live happy lives. Enugu is well-organized, less stressful, and clean, making it a top choice for people looking for an exciting and beautiful city to reside.

Unlike other bigger cities that are chaotic and busy, Enugu is quiet, safe, and beautiful. The city’s residents are welcoming, warm, and eager to help whenever you are in need of assistance. The lower cost of living compared to other Nigerian cities, a good transportation system, and well-established educational institutions have enabled Enugu residents live a happier and peaceful life compared to their counterparts in other cities. Just like other countries, Nigeria has its fair share of problems, but optimism and hope have played key roles in keeping the society together.

As the rainy season sets in, I only hope they will not abandon the various road projects going on in Enugu state.

This road had better be unfinished oh! sad

I don't know why there's little attempt to make projects (especially roads) look pleasing to the eye after construction. All most Governors are concerned about is just to tick the box that says they've provided road in an area no matter how ugly or substandard the road looks, so they can brag that they've delivered 'dividends of democracy'!

I hear boys are complaining though say money no dey reach them oo as per Nigerian style

It's a problem we have with governance and politics in Nigeria as a whole....especially in the oil rich Niger Delta states. If the Governor doesn't share money, then he's got to be a greedy, stingy muthafucker that wants to chop alone!

This is why some Governors are forced to play along and share money directly, or under the guise of providing expensive cars for greedy local Chiefs, or under the guise of providing funds for community projects. shocked

Should I open a new thread for Ebonyi, so many good things happening there now?

Oga m,
I think it will be very gracious of you to open a thread for Ebonyi.
I think if you open the thread, your trademark midas touch will help sustain it.

I hate it when I get notifications on nairaland.com from this thread and rush to check it out, only to see people exchanging words with unprintable languages.

Let me sound a note of warning: I don't care whose side you are on, I will just activate Rule 2 on you if you do that.

It's better this thread stays dormant until we have reasonable pix and discussions to have here.

You are correct. Golf estate layout as seen from inside the new housing estate being built by Enugu state government behind the new market. Roads all done with gutters.

The estate is big, over a hundred new buildings are going on in different stages inside this estate. This is a way to provide direct employment for residents.

I wish State governments will help open up more planned estates like these. Even if they don't have money to tar the roads immediately, but putting gutters on both sides and appropriately mark out the plots will go a long way in creating livable spaces in the region.

I really applaud Gov Ugwuanyi for this laudable project.

I know the kind of estate i'll see and i'd be excited. All these i'm seeing is just more of the same mediocre, unserviced estates of which there are many all over the SE. Only a few estates in Nigeria meet world-class standards, and they're mainly found in Lagos, Abuja and maybe Port Harcourt!

With the MOUs signed by Obiano, was hoping to see some in Anambra as well. Anyway, fingers are still crossed as those ones are work in progress....even if they seem to be taking forever to deliver.

Owerri has nothing on Enugu, call places in Owerri that you can compare with Enugu. People come to have fun in Enugu, from Owerri and all other eastern cities. Does Owerri have a Shoprite outlet,Toscana
Is there a villa de la Toscana in Owerri? grin

You would be one of the best posters on here if not for your anti imo bias. I am in diaspora and have been approached twice about a building contractor by people with no connects back home. Can you believe your name came up both times in my head?

Can you also believe that I told them I don't know any simply because of your repulsive behavior.

You're well aware that Owerri has ShopRite and a flood of other modern grocery and shopping estavlishments. Evolve your character because you're limiting yourself. Someone that's into contraction that's actively vexing against Imo that's seeing more contruction than anywhere else. Wake up

I'm quite surprised Spyder880 could be that emotional but that was long time ago. As at then Owerri wasn't as developed as it is right now and Enugu was the fastest developing then. There was no Shoprite or all these big malls you have in Owerri today and the hotels were still at early growth stage. Ironically only Enugu had a cinema in Southeast then but presently the cinema moved from Enugu to Owerri making Owerri now the only Southeast city with a cinema for 3 years running. Heard the new Spar Mall at Enugu will soon open their cinema though.

As far as Enugu and Owerri are concerned, i think i favour Owerri to break into the list of most sort after cities in Nigeria. Even though Enugu is older and developed earlier than Owerri, i like what i'm seeing in the tourism (hotel) industry in Owerri. The city is behive of activities due to it's Oringo mantra.

Baba, You had to pick a comment as old as 6 years to complain of? grin

I have also lived in Owerri and built about 6 buildings in Owerri town, Mbaise, Ogwa and Mbano and planning a new project in Owerri currently. I made the comment in humour, and you can tell by the smileys and the jokes in the post. I love Owerri as much as I love Enugu, I even started an estate in Owerri in 2015.

Owerri rocks! grin
