I'm quite surprised Spyder880 could be that emotional but that was long time ago. As at then Owerri wasn't as developed as it is right now and Enugu was the fastest developing then. There was no Shoprite or all these big malls you have in Owerri today and the hotels were still at early growth stage. Ironically only Enugu had a cinema in Southeast then but presently the cinema moved from Enugu to Owerri making Owerri now the only Southeast city with a cinema for 3 years running. Heard the new Spar Mall at Enugu will soon open their cinema though.

My emotion was a humorous response as can be seen there, no need making a mountain out of a harmless post. But you are correct about the age of the post, very old. Things has changed now. I will be in Owerri in the first week of next month, maybe you can invite me for a feast in one of the beautiful locations you have been showing us in the Owerri thread? grin

You would be one of the best posters on here if not for your anti imo bias. I am in diaspora and have been approached twice about a building contractor by people with no connects back home. Can you believe your name came up both times in my head?

Can you also believe that I told them I don't know any simply because of your repulsive behavior.

You're well aware that Owerri has ShopRite and a flood of other modern grocery and shopping estavlishments. Evolve your character because you're limiting yourself. Someone that's into contraction that's actively vexing against Imo that's seeing more contruction than anywhere else. Wake up

I don't think Spyder880 is starving without your recommendations. Just saying... cool cool cool

Moving on...anything investment anywhere in the SE is a welcomed development. I love Enugu and Owerri.

I pray Owerri folks gravitate more towards industries and factories than building hotels at every corner.

I can't fathom why a person has been allowed to troll non-Anambra Igbo folks. This has been on for years.

This same cannibalistic Anambra filth has been trolling on this thread since inception.

He trolls you if you're Igbo but not from his Anambra village. He won't care if a Yoruba man talks down on his Anambra village but heck, he won't spare an Asaba man talking about his village.

I'm wondering if there's an unstated consensus that exonerates Chino of all ills.

He has always tried to derail the thread from inception, no way.
He spoilt his own state thread with his hands and came back here to settle thinking he will succeed. Any thread created for Anambra, he will spoil it himself.

When Anambra is under attack from others, the coward runs away. It usually takes dispersion from other Igbo people to douse the attack but he will come here to form James Bond.
That xter makes me laugh walahi .

I have also lived in Owerri and built about 6 buildings in Owerri town, Mbaise, Ogwa and Mbano and planning a new project in Owerri currently. I made the comment in humour, and you can tell by the smileys and the jokes in the post. I love Owerri as much as I love Enugu, I even started an estate in Owerri in 2015.

Owerri rocks! grin

I think every state in the SE has carved a niche for themselves.

Enugu is supposed to be the spiritual capital of Ndigbo, and this is partly responsible for the boom in real-estate in the capital. Contributions to the state economy also come from agriculture, from manufacturing, aviation, and potentially from coal powered power plants.

Anambra has carved a niche for itself in commerce and industry; with contributions coming from agriculture, real-estate and potentially aviation.

Ebonyi has carved a niche for itself in agriculture and quarry; with contributions from tourism, and this could be central to the states economy if Governor Umahis' plans come to fruition. Abakaliki has the potential to be the most beautiful capital in the SE.

Imo has carved a niche for itself in tourism, real-estate and oyel and gas. It could have had contributions coming in from agriculture if Governor Okorocha had been serious with his 'ikwuola nku' initiative. Owerri is on course to be the Las Vegas of Nigeria if it plays its cards right, and Rochas seems to be doing the right thing with regards to developing and expanding Owerri. He just needs to improve on the quality of the roads his gov't delivers.

Abia has likewise carved a niche for itself in commerce and industry, specialising in fashion and fashion accessories like belts, handbags and shoes. The state gov't needs to clean up Aba and make it a beautiful, clean, green and welcoming city. Aba has the potential to be the 'Milan' of Africa if the state gov't plays its cards right.

So you see, Imo is on the right track concentrating on tourism as its core developmental strategy. smiley

I'm as surprised as well.

Is it the cost or something else, if it's the cost, they can as well make just one closed drainage at the either side of a road instead of constructing it on both sides and then tilts or slant the side that doesn't have ditch towards the side that has the drainage for proper channeling of runoffs. then instead of the drainage they will now construct durable pavements or walkways on either sides of the road with strong kerb.

This shouldn't be a rocket science.

I think understanding the technology gap between Europe or America to third world countries and why we make do with what we have in our environment will enable you understand this issue better.

Abroad, they don't use concrete to make gutters, they use pipes. So it's naturally closed. Concrete gutters are actually more expensive and increasing the cost with more concrete to cover them will be prohibitive.

It appears using concrete to make drainage channels was the technology we inherited from what the British colonialist government taught us and we never change once we learn something in one way.

Besides, Nigeria industries are either incapable or ignorant about what it takes to make these drainage pipes. Storm drains used for gutters on highways are also prefabricated with steel by companies in those countries of Europe or America. We don't have any steel companies in Nigeria capable of fabricating steel cups talkmore drainage gutters as we have abroad, so again, we have to make do with our usual cement and rods.

Please don't give me the lecture about Europe or America I live in America but the last thing I'll do is comparing America and Nigeria. The pictures below are new developments in Ghana and Angola and before you criticize me for a few pictures please research about the new developments that are ongoing in this countries as they are all in Africa. Our standard is so low in Nigeria that we defend mediocrity.

O'l boy please Stop playing smart by half. I have been to Ghana and there are open gutters everywhere.
Those one or two estates may or may-not even have gutters.

Is that not Ghana picture below that has open gutters that oyibo boy jumped inside?

Is that not Owerri in the second picture that has estates with closed drains?

Does it mean all estates in Nigeria have closed drains = NO!
Does it mean all estates in Ghana has open drain = NO!

The estate you posted from Angola is actually a silly comparison.Tell me the whole of Angola is like that, then you will have a point. It's clearly a complex built by a big construction company both the building and the streets. The equivalence is to post Eko Atlantic city or 1004 flats built by Julius Berger for millions of dollars and start comparing a street in Asata not even up to 100,000 dollars and blabing there is open gutter etc. If we have the money for Julius Berger to build every street in Nigeria, then we would be richer than America!

I have already told you the reason is that we don't have the industrial backbone to produce proper storm drain-pipes. So we improvise with concrete gutters (Which is better than nothing). In the future, people like INNOSON may produce proper drain pipes and we can begin using them. I remember when Zinc was the roofing material, then it became aluminium and now vinyl. Things are changing and one day, we shall get there. For now, Build gutters on both sides of every street to make sure waste water isn't pouring on the street and children are playing on it and catching diseases.

Some countries may have a policy to import the drain pipes, good for them. But if you need to address issue of open gutters, it can only be addressed at policy level and not at the level of folks like Spyder who are just using whats available to provide a service.

It seems they named it valley estates because its located at the foot of the Iva valley waterways. It's also very close to the Iva valley primary schools.

The modus operandi ofthe Enugu state government is to map out a piece of land as a housing estate, create roads and gutters in the land and then sell as housing estates.

No one is playing smart here, but you giving excuses for mediocrity is something I can't understand. And as for Ghana and Angola, I never said they don't have open drainage rather I said NEW DEVELOPMENTS, other African countries are changing from old ways of doing things and I believe we as a country have to catch up. As for folks like Spyder, I commend what they are doing but Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well. The same way big or small companies are investing in Angola and Ghana and doing well is the same way big and small companies are doing in Nigeria and those places are not richer than Nigeria. This is not equivalent to Eko Atlantic city but it was constructed with a level of standard that an average individual can afford and it is in Ghana.

I woke up with an idea this morning.

I had wanted to open a pan Igbo thread, comprising pictures and news from all Igbo speaking areas. This will be a good way to keep track of happenings in the south east and other areas. I visit most south east states and work there.

The benefits of the thread is regional cohesion, a common approach to problem solution in areas of common interest like security, industrialisation, roads and power.

The expected drawback will be the inevitable bickering that may occur if someone thinks their own areas are being misrepresented. But everyone is free to throw in news and pictures to grow the new thread.

If you support this idea of opening a pan Igbo thread, click "like"

If you are not in support, click "share"

Voting atarts now and ends on Saturday morning the 28th of April 2018. Thanks for your understanding.

Long live Igboland.
Long live the good people of the old Eastern Region.
Long live Nigeria.

I think the thread should be to discuss issues facing the South-East especially in terms of development and profer solutions to them. I blieve as Igbos, we're not pulling our weight enough. We have the numbers and knowhow, i don't understand why we cannot come together and discuss the way forward. Especially for those of us on Nairaland.

We must be careful about talking about SE only as if it is the only Igbo area!... it must be inclusive of Igbo in Rivers,Cross Rivers,Delta,Edo, Venue etc!

I'm not against not including these non SE areas but based on my experience, including them always seems to cause a lot of distractions. Even though i know these areas are Igbo speaking, i think we should limit ourselves the SE with the inclusion of only Igbo areas of Delta state , particularly Aniocha/Oshimili. They will somehow find their way into the discussions anyways.
