Hypo... they hardly rass in uniport inside sch except off camp aluu and choba area.

Except uniport has changed
My dear, they would rass you in broad daylight, in full view of passersby and for the first thing on your mind will be to signal the security officers (man'o'war) but you'll be shocked to see them already looking at you and your predicament... Ask any knowing uniport student what happens in 'Abuja' these days...

Four years in Unilag and not a single problem with me or anyone I know on campus. Maybe you look timid, and they love timid looking guys.

Next time, try and walk with at least one other person and not just yourself.

this is wrong. have you tried reporting to those school authorities. you should do that. if its not against the school rules, report to the police too. stop carrying your laptop, expensive phones and wallet or too much cash in the night. just go with a small phone and some change and your books. and wear sneakers so that if it calls for running, you'd be ready. if you notice them again, run towards areas where there are people and shout.

"Obtaining" is a popular word used by most students on campus. If you're just hearing that, don't worry, I'll explain it to you. "To obtain" means to forcefully collect one's property either by using armed instruments (e.g knife, gun) or using some strange or scary voice..(can I call this "robbery ") I don't know any other way to explain this but as you read through, you'll surely understand what I'm talking about. Permit me, cos I'm gonna be making use of the word "obtain".

"Obtaining" as become a culture in the university of Lagos (no offence. I'm also a student there) and a lot of people have kept quiet about this, maybe because of the pressure or the response they get after reporting to the security officers or maybe to their friends and you know how friends do behave, especially guys. They'll just laugh over it or call you names like "ode" (meaning "fool"wink.

I was once in the midst of my friends when a guy came in and was talking about this same issue. He shared his experience with us, how some notorious guys went away with his belongings (his phones, laptop and the little cash with him) after threatening to kill him if he shouts or make any silly move. He said,

"I was on my way home after we had an evening class in my faculty (revising for my forthcoming exams). I usually pass this road and something like this has never happened to me but I've heard of it a lot. It was 7:45pm when I left my faculty and was heading towards the second gate when I heard someone calling. At first, I pretended to be deaf not until two guys walked past and stopped me. The first guy was like " where u dey go?" and I replied him immediately that I was on my way home. At that point I noticed everywhere was so quiet and there was hardly anyone passing through that route. It was only the three of us there. Then I knew that I've entered into the lion's den. The first thing I thought of was the laptop with me. It was given to me by my friend to make use of, for a quick revision. At that point I knew everything was just gonna disappear. I gave up.

The second guy told me to bring everything I have on me. At first, I tried to prove stubborn by not giving them anything not until the other guy showed me a gun just below his belly. Well, I've watched lots of Nigerian movies where they make use of toy guns to rob, but I can't risk my life at that moment, besides, that was the first time someone's gonna show me a gun. Immediately, I gave them my 2 phones (with the charger), laptop and my wallet (containing about 7k). I was just praying to God to come rescue me. As soon as they collected everything, they disappeared into the thin air. I was speechless. I didn't even know when I shouted and some guys came and I narrated everything that happened to them. All they told me was to be careful next time, that incidents like this do happen, even on campus. Well, I'm a fresher. Maybe this is the way Unilag wants to welcome me

After the guy narrated the whole story, my friends just bursted in laughter. "Sheybi u go dey form jagaban for campus. Why u no fight them na", said Uche, one funny guy in my dept.

But, truth be told, incidents like this are happening everyday and I know one of you reading this has been into such situation, one way or the other, or you know someone who has. Students are no longer safe in the campus environment and some have made a decision, never to step out of their hostel once it 7:00pm. Some have even decided never to stay on campus till they finish their education, due to incidents like this.
Yes, we know a university is a place where we meet different kind of people from different part of the country but if we all make up our mind to curb this social act by students (yes...students are the ones involved), working alongside with the management of the university, then we can for sure alleviate this mess.

I just hope this article gets approved so that people can be aware of what's happening in the University of Lagos. And the management of the university can do something about it or do more (if they're working on it). We're tired of this. Come to our rescue.

During my Bsc. Days in Unilag (Graduated last year and currently serving) I only heard of such incidence happening around Faculty of Art/Business Admin during late hours but that was during my year one in school.

From year 2 to final year was calm and I didn't hear of such.

From the Op writeups... Since he said it's he was obtained in second gate (Iwaya gate) I can only suspect FSS boys... I fear those boys. That's the headquater of cult boys in Unilag.
Actually, incidents like these don't occur frequently because of the relatively strong presence of protection and security within the school environment. Alpha Base, those guys are really doing their job.

many of your type have been wasted on the road because of lack of sense. if you are confronted with two armed robbers in the night. it's only wisdom and God that will set you free whether u be Floyd mayweather, just one shot and your machismo will end.

We learn everyday, i finished from unilag a few years ago. I am not sure about private universities, but these things happen in most public universities. The last time i went to Unilag, there were security men with Pump action rifles, guess that did not help. Its the same in the outside world, so brace yourself. Folks that believe that they are strong will always try to prey on those they perceive as weak.
When going out at night, walk through well lit areas. Make friends and stop walking alone (be a liverpool fan, just kidding). I was never obtained because , My voice was very hoarse and my face strong. My pidgeon game was tight. Plus i had some friends that feared nobody (Based on where they grew up), and we were always together.

I no say make you go join bad gang o.

Don't be surprised that most of these 'obtainers' are not even students of the school. Anyone goes in and out of the campus. Some will come during exams when students are Checking sitting arrangements, they'll pretend to be students checking their matric number and use the opportunity to dip their hand into open bags or appealing pockets

So many foolish comments on this thread angry

They are all fööls, telling him to man up, he's a sissy, etc. That's just plain armed robbery and we dont need a soothsayer to tell us that people who engage in such activity as students will graduate to home invasions, rape etc later in the wider society. That is if they are not already into such crimes even while living on campus.

Nairaland is a barometer for the state of Nigerian youth and a pointer to the disastrous future that awaits this nation. The youth are all over here, they can't even spell, think or understand the basic requirements of a stable society. Nigeria is going to crumble on the same epic scale as DR Congo and the reverberations will be felt even up to the shores of the Indian Ocean!

Most students think the campus is some form of ideal environment and so move about carelessly, easily distracted.

When moving in Nigeria especially at night move in groups. Also move with the barest of items, no phones, no keys, the barest money.

Making calls while strolling after 7pm is an invitation to the thieves.

Sad reality of living in Nigeria undecided

Living in fear.
