I am stranded. pls help!.

I want to pursue a career in Human Resources Mgt. Thus, i want to study HRM at masters in canada.

So far, i've found just york and uni. of Toronto offering it reasonably. Most others don't offer it surprisingly.

The prob is, the fees are too too much. I don't know if i can afford it. And, Canada it must be.


Please what do i do? Am i not searching well?

Please help if you have helpful solutions.

Check university of lethbridge, university of manitoba and university of regina. The states with the cheapest tuition in canada are alberta, manitoba, saskachewan, new foundland. I suggest you check the universities in those states if they offer HRM. I hope you have a 2.1 sha or your gpa is very close to 2.1.

Thk u very much. I just checked up the schools. Manitoba is the most suitable. My prob is i don't know if there is consideration for those whose B.Sc was not in HR or Management cos d course there is M.Sc Mgt. with specialism in HR.

I think Queens University offers the MSC in HR as well.

Just a heads up-Canada is not like the US and Uk where you'll find all sorts of mushroom schools. Their education sector is quite regulated.Hence, your finding it difficult.

You might be better off with the Diploma in HR and Management, because, you spend less time in school, and most employers in Canada prefer the short/certificate courses.

The University of Winnipeg offers a Diploma in Hr and Mgt with internship. Some schools in Ontario(Humber College, Seneca etc) as well.

I finished from the University of Winnipeg and also went on to bag the Diploma In Hr and mgt.

Just a quick question. Why Msc? I have come to observe that most Nigerians are crazy about M.A and M.sc.

What's the best method of entering the HRM market in Canada? I hear it's currently very competitive and cut-throat? However, my strategy is to get the SHRP certification with HRCI because the process of getting a CHRP is a bit too cumbersome for me as I currently reside in Nigeria.

@liss.You are right. It is very competitive. I was only able to get an internship and some interviews after I graduated.
Well, you still need the CHRP designation to enter the HR market in Canada(although there is still a lot of emphasis on work experience), and you need to take the HR program before you can register.

The CHRP is actually quite straight forward. You only have to complete two levels, and it's all multiple choice.
I took the first step twice and didn't pass, lol. I'm focusing on writing the CIPM right now as I moved back to Nigeria. CIPM is actually well recognized in Nigeria and popular amongst employers;CIPD-UK sometimes comes next.

Moreover,it is important to have designations that naija employers know about so you don't have any problems when it's time to get promoted, because I believe most organizations will have a list of designations they recognize in their databases.

Many thanks for your insight. I have actually being inducted as an associate member in CIPM and working as a HR professional in Nigeria. Was only thinking in the lines of getting Canadian certification because I am thinking in the lines of migrating.

Your move back to Nigeria has made me ask if it would be worth it since you have all the necessary requirement and still felt the need to move back home. I guess that means it would be near impossible for me to achieve it.

Soicology is a social science course and therefore in line with working in the HR environment. However, I would suggest you start your certification as soon as possible. BTW, R u currently studying in Nigeria or Canada?

@liss. you are very welcome. It's nice to know you have completed the CIPM. I guess I can always ask you questions because I plan to register for the February exam.

My moving back to Nigeria was a personal thing, however, if you are still thinking of moving, you have to be prepared to go back to school to enable you get a job in HR.

I won't lie to you, Canada is a leveler like most Western countries, and most times you will have to start from the bottom to acquire the experience you need to get to the top.
You never know you might be lucky to get you want .

@ What level are you currently? If you are in say, 300level or 400level, would advise you hold on and finish your degree but if you are still in 100level, I would suggest you register with the institute and begin at the foundation level as there are two exams in a year, you just might be certified the same year you finish your university education.

That's good. Well, attending classes is mainly due to how capable you are and how much resources you have e.g time. Do you currently work? If you do not have much time to read and do not have enough access to books, I would suggest you go for classes as you might get more knowledge and esperience through teachers and mixing with other students.

If you have enough time to read, adequate work experience and have access to books, I would suggest you skip classes as Intermediate 2 is a relatively easy level to pass. I know quite a number of people who never went for classes and made it at first attempt.

All in all, it's about how far you are willing to prepare. Hope this helps.

As one of the posters rightly said, u can pass intermediate 2 and PE 2 without attending lectures. Read your study materials, and buy past questions from the institute, buy about 4 past diets before the diet u will write. Endeavour to provide answers to the questions... and cover all the study materials, u will surely pass by God's grace. The only diet l always advice for lecture is PE 1, most especially because of Operations Research, unless you are good with calculation though!
